THE H OA THE CLASS OF 1936 A PAEAN T was evrdent even back so far as September 1932 when the class of 1936 entered hrgh school that thrs was no ordrnary cla s There was about the class an arr of drrvrng energy of swrft assurance and of keen rntellrgence that has grown and developed durrng, rts four years of hrgh school brrngrng rnto full frurtron the promrse that was sounded when the class started breakrng and settrng records back rn 1932 The class has been no skyrocket qurck to flare and qurck to burn rtself out but has glowed wrth a steady and rncreasrng brrllrance throughout rts four years of achrevement Perhaps the thrng for whrch the cla s of 36 wrll be most long remembered rs Its abundance of dramatrc talent and rts hrgh dramatrc standards Through the success ful dramatrc work of members of thrs class rt was proved for the frrst trme rn the schools hrstory that ser rous dramatrc productrons are possrble rn a hrgh school of thrs srze It rs srgnrfrcant that members of the class of 36 have held leadrng roles rn every all school and Thespran play that has been produced rn the past four years Offrcers for the Freshman year of the class were as follows Presrdent Margaret Currrer vrce presrdent Bcb Dayrs secretary Brll Sehnerder and treasurer Laura Clatterbaugh Durrng thrs year Gray Carpenter played the lead role of Tom Prror rn the Thespran Play Outward Bound and Marrbelle Redfreld placed frrst rn the humorous drvrsron of the home declamatory contest These two were admrtted to the Thespran Players dramatrc organrzatron The class presented an unusual chapel pro gram rn rts Freshman year whrch rncluded a skrllful enactment of the courtroom scene from The Merchant of Venrce In the Sophomore year Margaret Currrer made unforgettable her portrayal of Jo rn Lrttle Women and she and Jams Adams were taken rnto Thesprans Marrbelle Redfreld wrth her humorous readrng Ladres Frrst went to the State Declamatory contest at Eldora an achrevement never paralleled by any Sophomore rn the schools dramatrc hrstory Durrng thrs year John Madderc and Gray Carpenter won fame rn golf and also wrth Bob Davrs proved valuable rn football Sam Brown won musrc honors wrth hrs trombone and Mary Leacox scored great success rn the soprano solo drvrsron of the musrc contests Offreers for thrs year were the followrng presrdent Brll 1935 the Junror year of thrs class wrll long be remembered as the year rn whrch the Thespran Players produced Henrrcl Ibsens A Dells House wrth two members of th class of 1936 Kathryn Stewart and Gray Carpenter playrng wrth the skrll of pro fessronals the leadrng., roles of Nora and Torvald Helmer The Junror class play Mrgnonette was beautrfully enacted and produced wrth Marrbelle Redfreld rn the trtle role and Bob Davrs playrng oprosrte her Sam Brown went to the state musrc contest rn barrtone solo and Mary Leacox rn soprano Betty Jean Martrn endeared herself to everyone rn the leadrng role of the Grrl Reserve play Peg O My Heart The clrmax of the year was of course the JunrorSen1or banquet the frrst one ever to be followed by 'r dance The theme of the banquet was Crystals the decoratrons being carrred out rn a strrkrngs modsrnrstrc desrgn Offrcers for that year were the followrng., presrdent Bob Davrs vrce presrdent B1llSchnerder secretary Mary Beth Gee and treasurer John Maddex John Maddex Janrs Adams Laura Clatterbaugh and Paul VVegmuel1er led the class through rts frnal year rn hrgh school performrng therr dutres as presrdent vrce presrdent secretary and treasurer respectrvely wrth the utmost effrcrency Gray Car penter Marrbelle Redfreld Margaret Currrer and Margaret Feurt gave brlllrant perform ances rn the major roles of the Thespran play Berkeley Square Sam Brown and Mary Beth Gee play ed to perfectron the roles of Abraham Lrncoln and Anne Rutledge rn the Grrl Reserve play The Soul of Anne Rutledge John Maddex captarn of the football team Coy Heard eaptarn of the basketball team and Bob Davrs wrnner of the Evenrng Sentrnel Sportsmanshrp plaque all not only excelled rn athletrcs brrngrng, honor and esteem to the school but drd much to encourage cooperatron and sportmanshrp among the students Plays contests rnrtratrons partres games and frnally Baccalaureate senror play and Graduatron thus endeth one brref but glowrng chapter rn the llves of the 105 students who comprrse one of the grandest classes ex cr graduated from Shenandoah Hrgh School the Class of 1936 S E N A N D H , 1 9 3 6 VV V . i . g V .
