AUGUSTA B YI Augusta Bay, Sicily was the next Port of Call for SHENANDOAH. After leaving Palma on March 'l9th and transiting near Naples, Italy for an underway 'Vert-Rep, we arrived at Augusta Bay on the 22nd of March. Even before arriving there, most of the crew had prepared themselves for the worst. Speculating on why we were going to Augusta Bay and realizing that the entire oth Fleet was position- ing itself near the Gulf of Sidra, and the imaginary Line of Death, brought about a lot of anticipation and anxiety. Additionally, our scouting reports told us that it was nothing more than a refueling station and as such, there would be very little to see or do while anchored there. ln retrospect however, Augusta Bay may well have been our most memorable port. Certainly, everyone will remember our periodically secured liberty. But in years to come, what will probably be more memorable is the tact that on March 24th, ships of the oth Fleet, after being fired upon, returned fire, and without any United States casualties, silenced Colonel Khadafy.
