Known for its year round warm climate, Palma is considered a vacationef s paradise. such was the case for SHENANDOAI-is crew. d d T rrfr d yy ' We arrived at Palma lvlarch 'l3th. Two months of our tVtGdf,CfUlSS was behind us, Until arriving at Palma, we had seen very littlesun or fun. The next six days were going to change that. ln fact, from the day we pulled into Palma, the weatherwas sunny and warm. The weather seemed to lift spirits, and when coupled with liberty, good food, sandy beaches, night life, and plenty of good shopping, all added up to a well deserved break and lots of fun for the crew. Working through the local USO in downtown Palma, SHENAN- DOAl-ls welfare and recreation office arranged several different island tours and a medieval banquet. The USO also provided discount coupons to many of the local shops. Palma was certainly the nicest city SHENANDOAH had visited thus far, while in the lVled. Whether eating local cuisine at a sidewalk cafe, or shopping for Lladro porcelain figurines, orworld famous lvlallorcan Pearls, crew members felt at ease in Palma. Venturing out of Palma, some crew members made theirway tothe nearby city of Palma Nova. There, among luxury hotels and wide beaches, was the first real evidence of American influence that they had seen since leaving Norfolk. Yes, right there in Palma lyovdvvas a McDonald 's. And for those who discovered it, what a rea i was. All was not fun and games though. SHENANDGAH was in Palmo, tending ships of the fleet. Just outside the break water was the aircraft carrier, USS SAPATOGA. The realization that SARATOGA was in Palma and that soon she would be steaming toward the Gulf of Sidra, reminded us of our mission.
