M. DEPARTURE lt was January 10, 1986 and the sun had not yet risen, but already the pier was bustling with the arrival of officers and crew of USS SHENANDOAH. After many months of preparation, the day had come for our ship to get underway for the Mediterranean Sea. Ps families and friends left their sailors at the waters edge, feelings ot sadness and uncertainty hung in the air while they prepared to face the seemingly unending six month deployment. Vlhntefs crisp bite fell on the crew as we observed Naval tradition by manning The rails. At this point, the realization that we were leaving our homeland for an extended time suddenly became fact rather than a futuristic happening. The whistle blew, and the voice over the 'llvtC announced, Underway, 'N t- E
