Known for its year round warm climate, Palma is considered a vacationef s paradise. such was the case for SHENANDOAI-is crew. d d T rrfr d yy ' We arrived at Palma lvlarch 'l3th. Two months of our tVtGdf,CfUlSS was behind us, Until arriving at Palma, we had seen very littlesun or fun. The next six days were going to change that. ln fact, from the day we pulled into Palma, the weatherwas sunny and warm. The weather seemed to lift spirits, and when coupled with liberty, good food, sandy beaches, night life, and plenty of good shopping, all added up to a well deserved break and lots of fun for the crew. Working through the local USO in downtown Palma, SHENAN- DOAl-ls welfare and recreation office arranged several different island tours and a medieval banquet. The USO also provided discount coupons to many of the local shops. Palma was certainly the nicest city SHENANDOAH had visited thus far, while in the lVled. Whether eating local cuisine at a sidewalk cafe, or shopping for Lladro porcelain figurines, orworld famous lvlallorcan Pearls, crew members felt at ease in Palma. Venturing out of Palma, some crew members made theirway tothe nearby city of Palma Nova. There, among luxury hotels and wide beaches, was the first real evidence of American influence that they had seen since leaving Norfolk. Yes, right there in Palma lyovdvvas a McDonald 's. And for those who discovered it, what a rea i was. All was not fun and games though. SHENANDGAH was in Palmo, tending ships of the fleet. Just outside the break water was the aircraft carrier, USS SAPATOGA. The realization that SARATOGA was in Palma and that soon she would be steaming toward the Gulf of Sidra, reminded us of our mission. That is keeping the fleet strong for peace, th 5C?I.hlL1vOrk we did, until the words 'Liberty Call were passed over ue C Thcn, Palma de Mallorca welcomed the crew ofAD-4141 with open arms. 2 A55 r-1 'H-I 14 , L, vt Q, lklll. After leaving Palma on March 'l9th and transiting near Naples, Italy for an underway 'Vert-Rep, we arrived at Augusta Bay on the 22nd of March. Even before arriving there, most of the crew had prepared themselves for the worst. Speculating on why we were going to Augusta Bay and realizing that the entire oth Fleet was position- ing itself near the Gulf of Sidra, and the imaginary Line of Death, brought about a lot of anticipation and anxiety. Additionally, our scouting reports told us that it was nothing more than a refueling station and as such, there would be very little to see or do while anchored there. ln retrospect however, Augusta Bay may well have been our most memorable port. Certainly, everyone will remember our periodically secured liberty. But in years to come, what will probably be more memorable is the tact that on March 24th, ships of the oth Fleet, after being fired upon, returned fire, and without any United States casualties, silenced Colonel Khadafy. SHENANDOAH, at that time. was the most forward deployed if l fl 1 I if ,kg F - 4 1. 52155, , Q -.:..- W. ' - vfl- 't .J Q 521-4 Ti tender, supporting ships of the oth Fleet battle groups. Although our liberly ashore was curtailed at times, and we devoted most of our time anyway tending ships of the oth Fleet. we did take some time to tend to our own welfare. The chaplain and our ship's choir catered to our spiritual needs, when on March 30th they delivered a beautiful Easter Sunrise Service on the signal bridge. A week later. to boost spirits. we had an interdivisional basketball toumament. While S-3 was thrashing opponents, and running away with the championship, the rest of the crew was enjoying the fun and the warm sun at our first Mediterranean picnic. When we were not enjoying 'ttapside liberty, we were crammed on the messdeck watching Kissie Darnell's USO Show. or even better yet, shipmates performing at our talent show. Keeping us abreast of the latest fashions were MR2 Bowen and RMC Boozer, the King and Queen of the Med. No one knows for sure, but rumor has it it that they purchased their fashionable attire a few nights earlier at the Shenandoah Midnight Madness Sale. On hat day, the latest hat fashions received top bllIing. :....s.! is AUGUSTA B YI ,.-ov' rflf' 4 'Qligtf e U in aw Ee: Kas 'fix -. ig .1 'W J, M T , 1 1 . , i --1, 1. 1 L- 1-BH' ' ss 'Q 715-Lil , E I F ' lv' T N I ' r Q., Al' I 5 ' 1 hx ',Qi .1 K , U Tl if 'lip -if L x .- .' 1, - ' Fa. lux 'kg' ' r -:P lr E I AUGUSTA BAY I is-f' J' L , , ,?.1 4 ' L- 'i AJKQ . , X24 ,fr 5 QX wwiz-f'?4 XJ l F I N1 'fig Xx I X ,M 'ii xv ...Xe Cl X . Our heavy work load and lack of liberty in Augusta Bay left us emotionally and physically drained. Anticipating warmer weather, as familiar port and reduced international tensions! we looked forward to arriving in Naples. l-low wrong we were though. The weather in Naples turned out to be as bad as we remembered from our last visit. And no sooner had we moored, with our stern to the pier, than we heard rumors of us leaving and retuming to Augusta Bay. t i Wasting no time, crew members spent the next day and a half in their pursuit of liberty. And on April 'lOth, three months to the day since departing Norfolk, we departed Naples and set course for Augusta Bay. 1 X , .... if' V + il I fl ' I Q , , if W4 X . , f . s - - , 4 l . . ' Z.-f ' . Here, we wound down the remdinder of our Mediterrdneon obligdtions. We tended USS KING, USS DALE, ond USS RECOVERY. Additiondlly, we pointed the hull of SHENANDOAH, in prepdrdtion for our return to the stotes. Friendships with French sdilors were rekindled during our stoy in Toulon. Severdl crew members were invited to lunch on the French Novdl ships ond treoted to on outhentic French meol. In o return gesture, French sdilors visited SHENANDOAH ond dined with our crew. This wds our lost lvlediterrdnedn port visit ond we couldn't hove ended our Mediterroneon deployment more positively. The dred wos nice, there wos plenty to keep us busy, ond the French treoted us ds their wel- comed guests. ie' MQ' T I Salma-F 11 -. tel t VW' ,f I .41 4 X. Leaving France was a signal that our job in the Mediter- ranean was complete. We had a date with USS VULCAN, and we were on our way to Rota to meet her. lt was no secret USS VULCAN was having troubles of her own. We all held out hope that she would arrive at Rota in time and be ready to relieve us. What a sight she was too. when we saw her moored in Rota. She had made it, and she was ready to accept the baton. During the 3 days that followed, SHENANDOAH and VULCAN exchanged as much material, equipment and ideas as possible. But SHENANDOAH sailors saved some time for themselves to take advantage ofthe European shopping, dining and beaches. '--51.11 I -Y .KJ if y. it 'fi 5 it Q V E ----..
