HISTORY OF THE HIP Named for Virginia's beautiful Shenandoah National Park, USS SI-IENANDOAH CAD-261 was the first destroyer tender of her class to be constructed by the Todd Shipbuilding and Drydock Corporation of Tacoma, Washington. She was christened 29 March 1945 by Mrs. Daniel Hunt and commissioned 13 August 1945. Captain Albert C. BURROWS was SI-IENANDOAI-I's first Commanding Officer. Since being homeported in Norfolk, Virginia, in 1946, SHENANDOAH has not returned to the West Coast. SHENANDOAH's mission is best described by her motto, We keep destroyers fit to fight. However, she has tended many types of ships, including cruisers, amphibious vessels. submarines, auxiliaries and mine sweepers. The repair effort of the men and officers of SHENANDOAH has earned her a proud reputation in the Atlantic and Mediterranean. In 1947 SHENANDOAH was the first flagship for Commander, Naval Forces, Mediterranean. Since that first distinction, SHENANDOAH has served as flagship for Commander, Service Force Sixth Fleetg Commander, Cruiser- Destroyer Flotilla Four: Commander, Cruiser-Destroyer Flotilla Twelve. and Commander, Cruiser-Destroyer Flotilla Eight. SHENANDOAH was awarded the Battle Efficiency Pennant for her competence in destroyer tending and her performance in battle duties in 1952 and 1956. The tender was awarded the Engineering E in 1958, 1965, and 1972, and the Supply E in 1962. 1963. and 1967. For her participation in contingency operations in the Eastern Mediterranean through October 1970, SHENANDOAH subsequently received the Meritorious Unit Commendation. In addition to tending destroyers of the Atlantic Fleet. SHENANDOAH has deployed to the Mediterranean as Fleet Tender fifteen times. visiting most of the important ports of Greece, France, Italy, Spain, Malta, Gibraltar, Tunisia and Turkey. On 14 October 1964. during her eleventh Mediterranean deployment, SHENANDOA'H won in- ternational acclaim for her heroic rescue of the Dutch merchant vessel DORIS. The DORIS broke loose from her moorings during the height of a storm and became impaled upon the rocks of Molo San Vicenzo in Naples' outer har- bor. SHENANDOAH's Command Duty Officer was later awarded the Navy Commendation Medal for directing the rescue that saved the crew of the DORIS. SI-IENANDOAH is 492 feet long. has a beam of 70 feet and displaces 13.000 tons. She has accommodations for 43 officers and 753 enlisted men.
