He is ia June, 1941 graduate of Central High School of South Bend. JOSEPH S MANSEIELD JR LIEUTE ANT COMMANDER AVY EXECUTIVE OFFI ER Lieutenant Commander Mansfield grew up and attended schools in North Augusta South Carolina. He began college-level studies at the Citadel in Charleston South Carolina in 1953 and soon thereafter transferred to the U.S. Naval Academy and was graduated and commissioned Ensign, USN, in June 1958. LCDR Mansf'ield's first tour of duty was aboard the destroyer LAFFEY, homeported in Norfolk. From there he received orders to report to U.S. Navy Submarine School. New London, Connecticut, and upon graduation reported for duty aboard HARTER, a nuclear-powered attack submarine. After completing several patrols, he was then assigned to the pre-commissioning unit of the USS JAMES MADISON, aboard which he continued to serve after the boat's initial cruise. Following completion of that tour, he reported to Commander, Submarine Force. U.S. Pacific Fleet. for duty as a member of his staff. LCDR Mansfield's next tour of duty consisted of assignment in the Office of Naval Intelligence in Washington. D.C. Upon finishing there. he returned to the surface fleet. becoming SHENANDOAH's Ex- ecutive Officer in November. 1971. The XO is married to the former Evie Key of Richmond. Virginia. They have one daughter, Electra, 3 years of age. and reside in Virginia Beach. Virginia.
