W.-vii r- - N T-nl ' HISTORY OF THE HIP Named for Virginia's beautiful Shenandoah National Park, USS SI-IENANDOAH CAD-261 was the first destroyer tender of her class to be constructed by the Todd Shipbuilding and Drydock Corporation of Tacoma, Washington. She was christened 29 March 1945 by Mrs. Daniel Hunt and commissioned 13 August 1945. Captain Albert C. BURROWS was SI-IENANDOAI-I's first Commanding Officer. Since being homeported in Norfolk, Virginia, in 1946, SHENANDOAH has not returned to the West Coast. SHENANDOAH's mission is best described by her motto, We keep destroyers fit to fight. However, she has tended many types of ships, including cruisers, amphibious vessels. submarines, auxiliaries and mine sweepers. The repair effort of the men and officers of SHENANDOAH has earned her a proud reputation in the Atlantic and Mediterranean. In 1947 SHENANDOAH was the first flagship for Commander, Naval Forces, Mediterranean. Since that first distinction, SHENANDOAH has served as flagship for Commander, Service Force Sixth Fleetg Commander, Cruiser- Destroyer Flotilla Four: Commander, Cruiser-Destroyer Flotilla Twelve. and Commander, Cruiser-Destroyer Flotilla Eight. SHENANDOAH was awarded the Battle Efficiency Pennant for her competence in destroyer tending and her performance in battle duties in 1952 and 1956. The tender was awarded the Engineering E in 1958, 1965, and 1972, and the Supply E in 1962. 1963. and 1967. For her participation in contingency operations in the Eastern Mediterranean through October 1970, SHENANDOAH subsequently received the Meritorious Unit Commendation. In addition to tending destroyers of the Atlantic Fleet. SHENANDOAH has deployed to the Mediterranean as Fleet Tender fifteen times. visiting most of the important ports of Greece, France, Italy, Spain, Malta, Gibraltar, Tunisia and Turkey. On 14 October 1964. during her eleventh Mediterranean deployment, SHENANDOA'H won in- ternational acclaim for her heroic rescue of the Dutch merchant vessel DORIS. The DORIS broke loose from her moorings during the height of a storm and became impaled upon the rocks of Molo San Vicenzo in Naples' outer har- bor. SHENANDOAH's Command Duty Officer was later awarded the Navy Commendation Medal for directing the rescue that saved the crew of the DORIS. SI-IENANDOAH is 492 feet long. has a beam of 70 feet and displaces 13.000 tons. She has accommodations for 43 officers and 753 enlisted men. -1:1 34 55...-E. as 51? I9 3: THE LO G THREE Mo IHS It started as a short working cruise, a quick jaunt to the Med to do a job in the usual Number 1 SHEN fashion and then return, hoping as well to squeeze in as much sight-seeing and fun-having as possible where the load allowed. We stood out of Hampton Roads on 5 July 1973 and headed east. Weather and seas were tranquil and pleasant throughout the transit, a good omen for so we thought-D for the twelve weeks to come. Sunbathers abounded, and the cookout was fantastic! Just west of the Azores, a red-sailed catamaran with at least two naked freaks aboard caused quite an evening's stir. Other high points included daily sightings of porpoises, seabat captures, and an unsuccessful stab at a mail buoy. On the morning of the 16th, we checked in with the ever-present Soviet AGI and pulled into the Bay of Cadiz for a day to stretch our legs, wet our whistles, shop, and take on fuel in Rota, Spain. SHENANDOAH had arrived in Europe. Then it was on to Naples, Italy, to make friends with the USS CASCADE fAD-162 and discover the myriad sights, sounds, tastes, and other delights of the Neapolitan city-and countryside. Many of us witnessed Med-mooring for the first time there, and few will soon forget the unique nature of Naples Har- bor. Some became movie stars aboard the CASCADE, others made for lostl money in the slot machines, or explored back street shops and bars, and many saw for themselves those places you read about, such as Rome, Pompeii, Mt. Vesuvius, the Isles of Capri and Ischia, Florence, and Sorrento. It was here also that we took on our first repair customers, the destroyer escorts COURTNEY, LESTER, and HAMMERBERG. Three weeks later, we were underway once more, bound eastward for a vaguely defined anchorage in Elefsis Bay, Greece. More delights-and a lot of hard work-awaited in the six weeks that followed. Destroyer Squadron 12 and many other ships came alongside falmost en masse, it seemed at timesig ouzo and the Dafni wine festival caused untold hangoversg and the busses and routes to Plaka, Pireaus, and Glyfada soon became almost second nature in their familiarity to nearly everyone. Annoyingly familiar as well were the daily hassles of running and riding liberty boats, dealing with the garbage and water barges, and the belching presence of the Elefsis cement factory. Two events of particular importance during the period were the arrival of Captain Bekkedahl and the celebration of the 28th SHENANDOAH Birthday. After what seemed like days for some and ages for others, we then weighed anchor again, headed this time for that gem of the western Med. Palma de Mallorca. Following a short bout with some rough weather, we entered Palma harbor, tying up to a pier, the big west seawall falter departure of a cruise ship provided rooml, for the first time since Rota. In no time at all it was discovered that this was the place of good liberty. Various locales-Plaza Gomila, Bar- barella's, downtown, the Arenal. and beyond-all provided recreation for different people, some in ways that would even seem to call for a broadening of the dictionary definition of the term fill Hannah Trout introduced a great many to the pleasures of palmerio barbecues and bull tights, and the ship's beach par- ties at La Rapita were a unique treat as well fman. that was a lot of beerlll. But all the while. of course, there was work to be done too: repairs were carried out on several more Sixth Fleet destroyers. building yet more on the SHENANDOAH reputation in the Med for ability and spirit. and Deck Depart- ment fmuch in the manner of a man bringing on rain by washing his car. as we soon saw-D managed to erase nearly every trace of Elefsis cement dust. repain- ting both the ship's sides and most of her other outside surfaces. Then it hit the fan. All liberty was cancelled that Yom Kippur Saturday night, as all U.S. ships present escalated to Defense Condition Ill. SHENANDOAH began making ready to head east on very short notice if necessary. As our forces' status became clearer. the restrictions on liberty were gradually relaxed. But the uncertainty remained: What now? Would we still be able to rendezvous with CASCADE in Naples and move on home as planned? fAnd what about the Early Bird?l The answers were not long in coming. We had been extended, a turn of events brought on by a combination of the Arab-Israeli conflict and problems the CASCADE was having in Naples drydock. Many were hoping that at least part of the extension time might be spent in Palma fif only-O, but on the morning of 15 October, as scheduled all along. the word went to shift colors and we made way once more for the murky waters of Naples harbor. Not an hour had passed, however, before word came by radio- divert, set course for Soudha Bay, Crete. SOUDHAl Of all places! Oh jeezl': ffQ1,y'M,e'S6c'Xu+fMCgis'll etc. But thankfully the decision was not firm yet. Notion afterward, further orders came, telling us to sail instead for the Greek mainlang stopping en route at Augusta Bay, Sicily, to take on fuel and receive provisioni in a rendezvous with the reefer ship CONCORD. So we did. Fuel came aboard, and so did a generous quantity of stores-though it took half the crew the better part of the night to get everything below decks and ready for sea. The twenty years' difference in age between the two halves of the Burton rig we had swinging across the pier was many timestoo readily apparent, as load after load of chow jerked, bobbed, and whined uve,- sending many into fancy footwork and ducking routines they had never know,-I themselves capable of. Then underway followed, close upon reveille hour. Soon thereafter SHENANDOAH was once again steaming up the Salamis Straittg good ol' Elefsis. Indeed. At least the pier was finished, though . . , , One by one the days of our second visit managed somehow to pass. Again many destroyers pulled in for repairs. Many jobs were urgent, especially in light of the tense state of affairs to the south, but nearly all, both big and small, were accomplished with success and spirit. Norfolk seemed farther away each de.y,bul in spite of that, there was a mission to be carried out and-just as the motto suggests-we did our best. At the same time, Greek ships received the benefit of SHENANDOAH expertise on several occasions, yet another contribution on our part to our forces' efforts in the eastern Med. As November set in, bringing cold, gray skies, and rain fthough little relief from the cement dust-D, the wonderings multiplied. The appearance of steak and lobster on the mess deck menu began to trigger anxious forebodings in our heads as, each time, unwelcome news followed close behind without fail. They weroa truly amazing set of coincidences. Early Bird, it was said, would be the main course at Thanksgiving dinner, and someone asked whether Santa Claus known the way to Greece. The time for wine festival and beaches had long since passed, as had the season for meeting sweet young tourists-for the most part, at least. Nonetheless, potentials for good liberty and fun still remained. We found many good times in Glyfada and downtown Athens, held sports days at the park near the Athens airport and by the Elefsis soccer field, took tours, spent time choosing good-deal priced stereos and components at the Air Force Audio Club, helped open the Volcano, supported in large measure the Kennedy, Venus, Nice Lady, America, Dolce Vita, and Sixth Fleet establishments fnot to men- tion our friend Greg's beer garden J, and so forth. But even this ended: riots erupted in Athens, resulting in much violence and bloodshed and bringing on the order to return to your commands and stay there to all American forces personnel. From the looks of it, civil war seemed entirely possible. We waited and watched, listening meanwhile to some rather hair-raising tales as some shipmates recounted their difficulties in making it back to Elefsis when the order to return went. Very soon, the word arrived that order was being restored, but that President Pappadopoulos had b66D overthrown. Yet another unknown had been introduced in the question of when do we leave. The First Annual Elefsis Pier Olympiad and Cogkout eased the strain of confinement somewhat. It was much further eased by two pieces of news: thef CASCADE was coming to meet us on her way to Turkey fwe weren't gains to , have to take her P1809 UP there after all, as rampant rumor had been s9.yiD8l'f and the order had finally arrived to outchop and go home. 3 E 30.9-flier Wrapping up the last jobs, swapping materials, and sending thef 1 afly Blfd Colitlngeflt on its way, we headed west, leaving Faliron Bay very mf' E y on the morning Of 1 December.
