CH PLAINS G.,-5,-J CDR Sam Hill Ray. CHC, USNR It was fortunate indeed to have both Catholic and Protestant Chaplains aboard for this Mediterranean Cruise. Chaplain Sam Hill Ray, the Catholic Chap- lain, will be remembered for his language classes and guided tours. Chaplain Billy Wolfe, the Protes- tant Chaplain, will be remembered for his supervis- ion of Operation Handclaspn and Bible Classes. Regular duties involved much personal counseling not only of our own men but also of those from the other ships in Naples. Catholic and Protestant wor- ship opportunities were provided not only on Sun- days and special occasions but also on a daily basis too. On one occasion a Jewish Rabbi came aboard and conducted services for Jewish Personnel. The sick were visited both in our own sick bay and the local hospital. For the benefit of those few who appeared before the Captain's Mast the Chaplains were there and available for counseling both before and after the hearings. Many times the Chaplains were called on to get information about loved ones back home by writing letters and calling on the Red Cross as required in cases involving emergency leave. The Chaplains were able to assist those who wanted to wire flowers for funerals or special occas- ions. Extra chairs and standing room only at most of our Divine Services made both Chaplains very much aware that they were needed, wanted, and appreciated. ,4 12,..,,.,. Thanks be unto God for the rich experiences and rewards of our journey. We rejoice in the beauty of Thy handiwork we have witnessed in the air, on land and at sea. We are grateful for a smooth cross- ing and for a safe return across the majestic seas. Now 0 Lord accept our prayer of thanksgiving and continue to lead us in paths of service to our fellow men until our ship of life shall drop anchor at last in the eternal harbor of Thy peace and Thy love. To be a part of the busy life aboard the USS SHEN- ANDOAH for five months has been a unique priv- ilege in my Navy career. Thanks to a wonderful ship's complement not only for the privilege but especially for the sincere warm welcome accorded me. Forgive the corny jokes. I really meant well.
