She was launched on 29 March.1945, and was christened by Mrs. Daniel Hunt, wife .of RADM Hunt KMCJ USN, the 12th Naval District Medical Officer. SHENANDOAH, the first ship of her class, was commissioned on 13 August 1945- The first Commanding Officer was Captain Albert C. Burrows, USN, and the first Executive Officer was Commander Hampton M. Ericsson, USN. The name SHENANDOAH was selected by the Navy Department and this is the first United States Ship to bear the name. Previously only the dirigible SHENANDOAH had been so named. Upon completion of SHENDOAH's fitting out in December 1945, the destroyer tender proceeded to the East Coast via the Panama Canal and on 12 January 1946 reported for duty to COMMANDER DESTROYER FORCE, U.S. ATLANTIC FLEET. Her home port and scene of her normal duties is Norfolk, Virginia. Since joining the Destroyer Force in 1946, SHENANDOAH has deployed to the SIXTH Fleet in the Mediterranean nine times, the first in 1947, twice in 1948, and in 1951, 1952, 1955, 1956, 1958, and 1961. In 1947 USS SHENANDOAH served as the First Flagship for Naval Forces, Mediterranean, commanded by Vice Admiral Bernhard H. Bieri, USN. Subsequent to 1947, the title of Naval Forces, Mediterranean was changed to the present-day United States SIXTH Fleet. During her tours with the SIXTH Fleet, she has visited most of the important ports in the Mediterranean including Gibraltar, Sfax in Tunisia, Argostoli and Pireaus in Greece and the major ports of southern France, Italy, Spain, Portugal and North Africa. Following her first deployment to the SIXTH Fleet, SHENANDOAH in October 1947 was over- hauled in Boston Naval Shipyard, again in 1949 she was overhauled in the same yard. Since that time she has been overhauled in Norfolk Naval Shipyard in 1951, 1954, 1957 and in 1960. Twice during SHENANDOAH's service life, in 1952 and 1956, she was awarded the Battle Effic- lency Pennant for her competence in tending de- stroyers and for performance of her battle duties. In 1958 she won the Engineering E. During SHENANDOAH's fifth deployment to the SIXTH. Fleet, in the year 1952, she .participated in lnternatlonal exercises with ships of the United 4 Kingdom, France and Italy. At that time she was flagship for COMMANDER SERVICE FORCE SIXTH Fleet. In April 1953, SHENANDOAH made a recrea- tional and training cruise to Newport, Rhode Island, Boston, Mass., and Quebec, Canada. In October of the same year SHENANDOAH embarked the staff of the COMMANDER FLEET TRAINING GROUP, Narragansett Bay and acted as flagship for the Training Group on its Caribbean Cruise. During the following summer she engaged in operations off the Virginia Capes in preparation for her 1954 de- ployment. Following her return from the Mediter- ranean in 1955 she visited San Juan, Puerto Rico, New York City and several other ports when her duties permitted. In October 1956 she departed for duty with the SIXTH Fleet and remained in the Mediterranean until her return to Norfolk in April of the following year. Soon after her return she entered the Norfolk Naval Shipyard for her regular overhaul period. This was followed by a trip to Guantanamo Bay, Cuba for refresher training and in September and October participated in the NATO Fall Exercises. In April of 1958 SHENANDOAH joined the SIXTH Fleet in the Mediterranean and remained there until her return to Norfolk in Sep- tember of that year. CH PLAINS G.,-5,-J CDR Sam Hill Ray. CHC, USNR It was fortunate indeed to have both Catholic and Protestant Chaplains aboard for this Mediterranean Cruise. Chaplain Sam Hill Ray, the Catholic Chap- lain, will be remembered for his language classes and guided tours. Chaplain Billy Wolfe, the Protes- tant Chaplain, will be remembered for his supervis- ion of Operation Handclaspn and Bible Classes. Regular duties involved much personal counseling not only of our own men but also of those from the other ships in Naples. Catholic and Protestant wor- ship opportunities were provided not only on Sun- days and special occasions but also on a daily basis too. On one occasion a Jewish Rabbi came aboard and conducted services for Jewish Personnel. The sick were visited both in our own sick bay and the local hospital. For the benefit of those few who appeared before the Captain's Mast the Chaplains were there and available for counseling both before and after the hearings. Many times the Chaplains were called on to get information about loved ones back home by writing letters and calling on the Red Cross as required in cases involving emergency leave. The Chaplains were able to assist those who wanted to wire flowers for funerals or special occas- ions. Extra chairs and standing room only at most of our Divine Services made both Chaplains very much aware that they were needed, wanted, and appreciated. ,4 12,..,,.,. Thanks be unto God for the rich experiences and rewards of our journey. We rejoice in the beauty of Thy handiwork we have witnessed in the air, on land and at sea. We are grateful for a smooth cross- ing and for a safe return across the majestic seas. Now 0 Lord accept our prayer of thanksgiving and continue to lead us in paths of service to our fellow men until our ship of life shall drop anchor at last in the eternal harbor of Thy peace and Thy love. To be a part of the busy life aboard the USS SHEN- ANDOAH for five months has been a unique priv- ilege in my Navy career. Thanks to a wonderful ship's complement not only for the privilege but especially for the sincere warm welcome accorded me. Forgive the corny jokes. I really meant well. SA E, X I SALT HORSE TO SIRLOIN Picture yourself in a ship's galley in the early days of Uncle Sam's Navy -- the days of wooden vessels, When the rats outnumbered the crew and the cook didn't consider it unusual if his daily chores started by chasing a couple of hungry rodents out of the cheesebox. The cook was a much malignedindividual. Generally, he was inexperienced in the preparation of food, an it would bea gross understatement to say that the cui- sine left much to be desired. The daily bill of fare, even by the stand- ards of 1795, consisted of simple foods. And if the menu varied, it was from bread, salt beef, and rice on Sunday to bread, salt port, and beans on Monday. The first ration law, enacted by Congress in 1794, fixed the minimum daily allowance of food per man. Nevertheless, the diet was monotonous, poorly cooked and inadequate for mini- mum health requirements., Ships were at sea months at a time and it was not un- usual for half the crew to be suffering from scurvy caused by a diet limited principally to salt pork and salt beef, the meat was often towed overboard to re- move part of the salt. It was so potent, even the sharks would not touch it. But as the equipment improved in the galley and the old wood-burning cook stove, known to Navy men as the Char- lie Noble , began to disappear from the scene, the preparation of food became more complex. The day of salt horse was doomed. Soups, fresh vegetables and fruit, fresh meats and poultry were on the menu., The Navy Cook Book, re- vised from time to time, became the galley bible. As the Navy grew and ships became lar- ger, galley staffs likewise became larger and more expert. The chief commissary- man and the cook had to know their jobs as well as the maitre dfhotel and the chef in a first class hotel. From experiments with various methods of messing over a period of years, the cafeteria system was evolved, first onthe capital ships, later on smaller vessels. flidited from an article that originally ap- peared as NavSandA Pub 2643 F53 RM: iff.. ,f fn.-FJ.: ,X .y : - 4! xxdjxfiyax VM A31 KTN gg N ,f A J, , Tee wf fm ,J .
