COMMANDING OFFICER CAPT. NEAL ALMGREN, USN Captain Neal Almgren was born in Haverhill, Massachusetts on 17 December 1915. He completed grammar and high school in Roches- ter, New Hampshire and then spent two partial years at the Uni- versity of New Hampshire. After graduating from the Naval Academy in June 1939, he spent his first year of commissioned service aboard USS YORKTOWN CCV-55 in the Gunnery and Repair Departments. Transferred to USS WINSLOW KDD-3595 while she was in the Hawaiian Detachment in mid 1940, Almgren served as Assistant Engineer until the ship was shifted to the Atlantic in the Spring of 1941. He served as Chief Engineer during Neutrality Patrols, North Atlantic convoys and South Atlantic patrol duty. Captain Almgren commissioned USS RINGGOLD QDD-5005 at New York Naval Ship- yard on 24 December 1942 and served as Chief Engineer during the Casablanca Invasion and preparation for landings on Tarawa. Detached from'RINGGOLD just prior to the invasion Almgren went on to commission USS LONGSHAW QDD-5595 in the Seattle-Tacoma Shipyard in early December 1943. Aboard LONGSHAW Almgren served as Executive Officer dur- ing the Kwajalien and Hollandia Invasions and raids on Truk. He was hospitalized for five months in mid 1944. Almgren participated in tho Philippine Liberation, occupation of -V Y Iwo Jima and Okinawa and in fast carrier task force raids on Japan. ., M ii, E vi, VICKSBURG returned to San Francisco with the first group of combatant ships in November of 1945. Captain Almgren attended the Naval War College, Command and Staff Course, at Newport from January to June of 1946. He spent the next two years in the Bureau of Naval Personnel as Advanced Base Detail Officer. .In 1948 Almgren returned to destroyer types as the Commanding Officer of USS DOYLE CDMS-341 which was liomeported in San Diego, - 'F1'0m J31iU21i'Y 1950, until July 1952 Almgren served as Eliginefff' mg 'and Damage Control Officer in the Readiness and Training Section on the Staff of Commander Destroyer Force, U. S. Atlantic Fleet. i In the summer of 1952 Captain Almgren returned to Washington H?-Aide to Fleet Admiral E. J. King and was detached in the Fall of 1.304 to take command of USS STEPHEN POTTER IDD-5381 P13011 Cietachment in August 1956 Almgren reported to the Uni Fllflfi' Of Pittsburgh for a course in Petroleum Logistics.
