After twelve days of constant steaming we joyously entered the beautiful harbor at Palma Mallorca and prepared to relieve our sister ship U.S.S. CASCADE. Although our stay in Palma was short, we readily found that Palma is truly the Miami of Spain. With its excellent and fashionable hotels, its gay shops and quaint sidewalk cafes and exotic beaches. Tours were in order to the Caves of Drach and surrounding communi- ties. The countryside was very colorful with the myriads of pastel wind- mills and abundantly verdant crops. Palma is a popular port of call of all ships of the Sixth Fleet and as we departed from this splendid port we were outspoken in our desires to re- turn here, possibly to await our relief. 13 1 4 ff? hs 1 fff ,d ,W fo 4 5. , .rg -2' I I fx G g,,.--Q7zgO-Lf- A -' ' 4 A fy V fv X ,f X wmv N X N jf o if 4 ' QQ -Q! 1 M I Z' b 1 Q A wh Q oi I -. ' i On July 1 We sailed into the breakwater of Naples harbor and Med Moored once again. The city of Naples looked down on us from several steep hills the principal ones being Vomero and Posillipo. Mt. Vesuvius to our right, Ominous and Awsome, com- pletes the perimeter. Naples being ltaly's third largest city af- forded SHENANDCAH many varieties of entertainment in addition to the tours to Mt. Vesuvius, famed burried city of Pompeii, Sor- rento, Isle of Capri and Rome. Naples is an exciting port in that there are commercial and passenger ships in and out of here daily from all over the World. We spent many liberty hours shop ping for the worldly goods available here and also enjoying the excellent Italian Cuisine found along the beautiful Bay of Naples. All hands seemed to enjoy Napoli very much and were disap- pointed when we were ordered to leave early due to the crisis in the Mid-East countries of Lebanon and Iraq. On July 19 we de- parted Naples heading for the Eastern Mediterranean Sea. 31 I Ill llll Aish -u.L.,w 1.-W-, 493 ,. 725- K ff-fP'W if-2 2 H K 4. 5 qw x- ,fi ,figs vi Y-A 3 1 I V' A tw IIIY iii 3,,.- we , Qfffj if 1 i vim giekg XF ' .c MLM X, , I X f' ra .- PM fl UN -' 9 lr Q. rfAu 'J' I 97 If glsjpx ji! After returning the stranded personnel to their respective ships we pro- ceeded in the company of several destroyers to Suda Bay, Crete. This deep water harbor, where low-flying German planes caught and destroyed elements of the British Fleet in 1941, was our home from July 26 to August 15, the day we got underway for the U.S.A. after having been relieved by USS Grand Canyon. Canea, the Cretan Capitol, with a population of 30,000 was the largest city in the area. This ancient city was the center of the Minoan civiliza- tion which flourished in the 16th century B.C. Since then it has seen the rule of the Romans, Turks, British and Germans. The city still bears the scars of the bombs and shells it received when it fell in the face of Ger- many's first large-scale paratroop attack of World War Il. Recreational facilities were limited but most everyone enjoyed the ex- cellent beach near Canea and the shoppers among us will long remember the Canea public market where anything from a wicker basket to a goat's head could be purchased. sl 44 ff, gi -8? yn E375 9 0 Q, N gg,-3 wa xx W 'w 4 lg lit -if Q..
