Steinbacher l l 1 Dcdiculivn We, the class of I968, are proud to have our dedication bestowed on an individual that we feel has con- tributed a great deal to the most exciting school year of our lives. You have had most of us in one of your classes during the past three years. You have your own easy- going way of teaching, which we all have enjoyed. We have all often put off our assignments, and more times than not were always goofing off. But you always seemed to smile at the good things we did, and even managed to smile at all the bad. This year you have been of special help to our class, as you served as our Senior Class Advisor. You helped us prepare for the future, in a way we know is right because it came from you. Because you have been such a great inspiration to us, we the Class of I968 are proud to dedicate the '68 Saghalie to you, Mr. Andy Tuson. 2 rf ' 4- cial' Q an f N1 ig::3GEx1a 'lx 5 sv 'Nw-W 2 as .ex i A so 'g san J.. The Highclimbers started off with a nifty 2I-7 victory over the Elma Eagles, but ended the season by suffering five suc- cessive losses, to a record a 2-6-I season. After being thumped at the hands of the 8th ranked Port Angeles Roughriders 33-O, Shelton turned next to their l967 Homecoming game, matching them against a tough East Bremerton Knight squad. East proved to be just that, by turning-off a second half Shelton surge to win by the lop- sided score of 46-ll. This was the time in which the stu- dents released their pep and enthusiasm which had been built up in them by the homecoming week. The activities of the week ranged from flower sales and slave sales to a ser- pentine and pep assemblies. Also as the clues were given out each day over the announcements for the football hero, students racked their brains to figure out his identity. Deb- bie Arkin finally solved it when she guessed Alan Tahia. lt was not too soon after that Fred Weil came to be known as Mr. Irresistible. His official name was Cheshire Cat. Then the White Rabbit came on the scene. As John Tylczak found it hidden behind the football scoreboard the fact was recognized that it was the second year in a row John had found it. Queen of Hearts awards were handed out to the winners of the contests on Friday, and then the pep staff went through their routines to raise the pep of the students for the game which came up that night. This is a student government group which meets twice a month to discuss, decide and plan Senate and student ac- tion for the improvement of our school. With the new constitution going into effect two years ago, this year's Senate has become more powerful and accom- plished greater objectives. This year with the Senator's approval, a pop machine which was installed in the angle building, has added to the income ofthe Student Body Fund. The Senate also sponsored Operation We Care, which involved the collection of bandages, bubble gum, and soap for the U.S. soldiers to distribute to children in Vietnamese villages. The Senate was also responsible for the appropriation of money to pay for the jewelry box given to Judy Stratford, the foreign exchange student from Australia. Being a member of the Senate creates an understanding of how our State and Federal governments operate and also gives students a chance to develop qualities of leadership. De- spite this setback, they did manage to produce Thanksgiv- ing Baskets to give to the Good Will. They were also plan- ning to have the Mother-Son Banquet as in the previous years. Dave Puhn, as President hopes that next year the new President will not have the same problem. Girl's Club managed to maintain interest and had an active year. Leslee LaBissoniere, who proved a capable leader, and Girls' Club produced a Father-Daugher Banquet, and start- ed a new idea of selecting a girl of the moth, and a girl of the year fro'm the nine candidates previously chosen. Presi- dent Leslee LaBissoniere was assisted by Ginger Medley as Vice-President, and Jana Barnett as Secretary. As usual the Girls' Club sponsored the Tolo. The theme this year was Strawberry Fields Forever . Decorations were beautiful as usual. Gaining 61f,verie14ce in Kifizmshzp lt was really neat, I just loved ity l wouldn't have missed it for the world. These were comments received from the boys and girls who attended Boys' State and Girls' State this year. .lan Donaldson, Gary Miltenberger, Don Bearden, Jerry Sparks, and Bruce Wilson attended Boys' State held at Gonzaga University in Spokane. Aleca Ruddell, Beth Quim- by, and Pat McNeil went to Girls' State held at Central Washington State College in Ellensburg. They learned Gov- ernment procedure and how to live together as responsible self-governing citizens. Both groups agree that the two States will help consider- ably in their lives later. They now know more about what is happening in our government and what makes it work. One of the highlights of the Boys' State was the talent show at the end of the week. Saturday night the boys displayed their talents on stage in groups and singly. Although this was the highlight for the boys, the girls took a different view on what their high point was. They felt that the decorating of their cities added extra fun. Every night the girls would stay up and work on their deco- rating. The week which they spent at Girls' State and Boys' State turned out to be not only profitable but fun in several ways. Those attending Girls' State and Boys' State would like to extend their appreciation to the American Legion Auxiliary for giving them the opportunity to attend. BOYS' STATE: Gary Miltenberger, Don Bearden. Jan Donaldson. Bruce Wilson. Wrfrkiug for the Ken Ht of 0 hers Without these willingly anxious service groups, our school would be up the creek . These kids all spend hours upon hours helping to try to better our school in any way they can. O is for order, the key to any office. O is also for Office Workers, who try to help turn the key of order. With the guiding hands of Billie and Floy, the Office Workers learn their duties and carry on. They help keep track of the at- tendance, file, answer phones, deliver messages, and other miscellaneous duties. Ifyou were lost in the library and you needed help, you would probably ask for help from the Library Workers. Under the direction of the librarian Mrs. Erwin, these girls give up their study hall to assist the students in checking out books, locating research material, decorating the bulle- tin boards, and doing a number of other activities to help make our school library more efficient. Everyone has probably heard of Key Club, but few know anything about it. Key Club is devoted to the idea of better- ing our community. lt is an international organization of which Shelton is a member in the Pacific Northwest Dis- trict. Their motto is We Build . They are led by Mr. Mills. One of their more important activities is selling tickets at various athletic games. One of the students' favorite pastimes is going to and watching the assemblies. The Assemblies Committee, headed by Mr. Rear, makes all the arrangements to provide many interesting programs for the entire student body to see. Equipped with hammer, rope, paint, and nimble hands, the Stage Crew goes into action. They spend hours laboring on the scenes for the school plays. ASSEMBLIES: KOWI. Anne Connolly, Pat McNeil. Some of their activities are volleyball, swimming, skating, basketball, and many other group activities such as hiking Cbike or otherwiseb. At the Shelton football and basketball games these girls can be found in the stands busily selling candy and coffee to the many sports fans. Each year they attend playdays at different schools. This year Shelton attended a playday in West Bremerton. The girls are now forming volleyball and badmitton squads for competition. Before these squads are formed the girls will have to have physicals and school insurance. The Girls Athletic Association advisor is Mrs. Ruth Willard. The officers for the year are President Chris Flint, Vice- President Vicki Noreen, Secretary Sue Morris, and Treasur- er Sandi Pozorski. Shelton's S Club, advised by Mr. Jack Wright has become very productive in the past two years. This years S Club, has raised money through popcorn sales at basketball games and wrestling matches. With the money raised the S Club has bought red blazers worn by the basketball team, and plans to buy more blazers to outfit the football team. All of the spirit that was shown by the Junior class promises a head start for their forthcoming year as Seniors. Annual activities, proving prosperous, included Junior sponsored dances and the Junior Prom. Fund-raising pro- jects boosted the treasury toward a much needed invest- ment. Advisors Mr. Nelson and Mr. Knight assisted the Junior class with various issues and propositions. Their services were greatly appreciated. Scheel, Treasrrrelf Babb ing, Bursting, Kill' Hewzldered Although the sophomore class is the youngest in the high school, it doesn't mean that it has to be the smallest. To prove the fact is this years class. It out-numbered both the junior and senior classes this year with two-hundred nine- ty-three students. Senior Courtesy is constantly being pounded into the heads of all underclassmen. Being the youngest, sopho- mores feel as though they are always being ranked, ridi- culed, and persecuted. However, they have accepted the fact that they are underclassmen and must abide by old traditions. Being advised by Mrs. Ruth Willard and Mr. Steve Jay, the sophomore class officers, President Scott Busack, Vice- President Mike Sparks, Secretary Gaye Scheel and Treasur- er Cheryl Zeller, have successfully tried to participate as much as expected. Building up treasury funds was well accomplished by a profitable bottle drive and other money- raising projects. The sophomores played a big role in the school this year as they helped raise pep and spirit. The sophomores usually participated wholeheartedly in this years activities. With all of the adjusting and getting acquainted, it is usual- ly rather difficult for the sophomore class to have many activities. The sophomore class of l968 has pulled through with a prosperous year. BACK KOH? Coach Jack Wright, Bud iels, Mike Sparks. Zlimlfcr Hagfrs Have Hard year lt was a season of peaks, of ebbs, of stunning upsets and heart-breaking losses, a season that saw a near win over lofty Port Angeles, and final defeat at the hands of South Kitsap, a season in which five seniors played their final games. For this year's Climbers, lady luck preferred to look the other way most of the time. The Climbers entered league competition with an even 4 and 4 mark against non-con- ference foes and brought it to a final 8 and ll mark with 2 league wins over North Kitsap and one each over East and West Bremerton. Averaging slightly over IO points a game, Jerry Sparks ranked high among the state's scoring leaders throughout the campaign. Jan Donaldson provided good hustle coming into the game late on many occasions. Chris Close, Bill Daniels, and Mike LaMarsh, along with sophomores Jim Corey and Mike Sparks also contributed greatly to aid the Climbers in a season which well could have ended in the District or State play-offs. 3 R' M, 'mah SH ELTON 77 6I 47 44 45 76 87 53 73 63 5l 7I 54 75 S7 SS 63 63 64 Season Recap Elma Centralia Hoquiam Centralia Hoquiam Montesano East Bremenonf North Thurston West Bremerton Port Angeles Elma North Kitsapf Central Kitsapl East Bremerton Port Angelesk North Kitsapk South Kitsapk Central Kitsapf South Kitsapf Season record 8-II League record 4-7 League games :Wm -T.. It grew and became a spontaneous uncontrolled roar. PlN! PIN! PIN! The referee slapped his hand on the mat signifying the pin and another victory. The crowd cheered ecstatically as the Climbers conquered another school. This was the excitement that prevailed over this year's wrestling season. Under the leadership of a new coach, Steve Jay, the Shelton Grapplers had a fairly successful season. They were defeat- ed by the East High Knights, and other than that, it was sel- dom that they were touched by other schools. At the start of the wrestling season, shortly after Thanks- giving, most schools had a large turnout for wrestling. East had 70, South had about 50 and Shelton pulled through with an initial 20. In spite of this minority number, experi- ence prevailed. Out of the I5 wrestlers that stuck with it, I3 were experienced either from Jr. High wrestling or previous high school experience. We have gained two'new counselors, Mrs. Barbara Martin and Mr. Glen Butler, who were busy guid- ing students, giving tests and helping with the general management of the school. They have also introduced such new ideas as a new and better-liked study hall system. Mr. Chet Dombroski, our new principal, was formerly a counselor and a coach at Shelton High School. Mr. Frank Willard is in charge of the Reed Building, which includes night school, special education classes, Rogers School. This year, under the watchful eyes of advisor Mr. Paul Gillie, the Journalism class stumbled, tripped and sometimes fell on the way trying to make a better and more informative edition of the Highclimber. At the beginning of the year the editor and page editors were chosen, based on their common knowledge of Jour- nalism. At the semester, the positions were changed again allowing fresh faces to gain valuable responsibilities and experience. For those that could not do well enough in their reporting, daily drills were provided. In these the student would use the Journalism textbook for various drills to increase their overall knowledge of Journalism and make them eligible for higher positions on the Highclimber. This year's Saghalie Staff was faced with many difficult de- cisions. ldeas varied from psychedelic covers to padded ones, from color for sports to color for candids. But the problems were eventually solved, under the capable super- vision of Mr. William F. Steinbacher and our co-editors Lin- da Witcraft and Anne Connolly, who were aided by the rest of the class. In November some of the class went to the University of Washington to attend a seminar to learn as many methods as possible to produce a good yearbook. They brought back more ideas as well as problems to our group. But most were solved by January 26, the first deadline, and we were well on our way. After catching our breath from preparing for the first dead- line, we were again swamped with a multitude of pictures to sort, copy to write and pages to organize. Deadlines were always coming closer and closer together, but it was fun producing the annual, and we all hope you will enjoy and appreciate it. ,4 Science 61116 - gffflfl and Kudding For quite a long time students have been aroused by their yearning to further explore the field of science. Up until this year their desire hadn't been satisfied. Their learning was done only in class time. At midfyear an opportunity to do more came along. Science Club gives those interested the opportunity to ex- pand their knowledge of the subject in which they are most interested. The members all work on individual projects. They have access to the chemistry, biology, and physics labs. A speaker from Rayonier spoke about Marine Biology. The club members visited the University of Washington in Seat- tle on March 30 to look at the various labs there. Science Club officers were: President Bob Fitzgerald, Vice- President Patty Thomas, Secretary Cindy Standley, and Treasurer Wayne Sushak. Mr. Lowell Stewart, a biology teacher, advised the club. Meeting after school on given nights, the club sights in on the targets and lets the lead fly under the supervision of Mr. Richard Morton. As the year progressed, the club en- tered many contests and placed quite well in the standings. The purpose of the Rifle Club is not only to teach proper ways of shooting, but also to teach safety in the handling of the guns. In addition, it provides a chance to practice their shooting. The range is fifty feet long, has six shooting stalls, and is located under the big gym. This year Rifle Club members repainted the shooting stalls and fixed the target returners. Money was made for the purchasing of new rifles and equipment through the sale of ammunition and a dinner sponsored by the Rifle Club. This money which bought the rifles totalled about S250.00. Rifle Club was a big success this year, and the rifle team looks forward to another good year. ,- - Cap-Watch Debafors for Hrs! Time Ou! Under the guidance of Mrs. Barbara Maloney, our debate team this year has done exceptionally well and especially for being a first year team. We belong to the Olympic League in debating which is made up of schools from all over Northwestern Washington. During the year, the De- bate trips and other expenses were financed through the candy sales after overcoming some obstacles like litter in the halls. An annual dinner before the last match was also initiated. During the course of the year, the debate team attended many college tournaments which were held at the follow- ing places: CID Saint Martin's College where we placed very well, with IO schools placing above us, and 65 below. We were about the only novice school there. C25 Seattle Pacific College where Karen Bodle placed in the finalist round of Oratory and Debbie Maranville placed in the finalist round in Impromptu Speaking. C33 University of Washington to which we were invited for the first annual U. of W. Forensic Tournament. C45 University of Puget Sound where we at- tended a meet on March 22 and 23. The following is a list ofleague matches in which we partic- ipated, all of which we won except those marked with an CU. These we lost by only one debate. Nov. Each club presented a skit. Many other fun events included going to restaurants, seeing plays and organizing Carnivals. Latin Club had an eventful year starting out with the Christmas cookie sale. Other money making activities in- cluded candy sales and Easter cookie sale. Adding a touch of spring was the Flower Festival which was held in May, and their Forest Festival float. The club members, to show their appreciation toward Mrs. Charlotte Hilligoss, the ad- visor, gave her an engraved silver platter. A trip to Seattle and the Mardi Gras were high points in the French Club last year. Also other activities, within the club were a trip to a french restaurant, went to a French play, and had a spring dinner for the members and their parents which entitled music, dinner and films. Advisor for French Club last year was Mrs. Mildred Kreger. German Club started off the year with initiation of mem- bers. Qreshmcn ,flcfizfcff ,virifs Sruzriug This year's ninth grade class experienced their best year in junior high school, the year they had been shooting for such a long time. Students found themselves with a new principal, Edward Fleenor, a man who believed in student government. The student council, under the direction of ASB President Ernie Johnson, made many decisions and also learned the important process of discussing ideas with each other. Although the Blazers came out on the short end during the football season and had somewhat better luck in basket- ball, the spirit of the team and rooters did not droop. The glee clubs and bands had an interesting year, taking part in contests as well as parades but having a good time during their class periods, too. This was also a year of a more active role for more students in dramatics. The Drama Club was organized, meeting af- ter school, and producing a three-act play for each of the upper grades and two-one act plays for the seventh grade. For the freshmen, however, the end of the year meant the Freshmen Formal, high point of their junior high years. The end of the year for the freshmen, however, was like the mixing of two seasons, the winter of the junior high years, but spring for their high school years and their futures. Then the going got rougher but they went on to win four more games out of the season. The strongest opposi- tion appears to have been South Kitsap. Although our boys tried hard they lost both games to them. Some of the out- standing all-around players were Marv Willson, Jim Corey, Jan Donaldson, and Mike Swisher. At the awards assembly, both the team captain and inspirational awards were given to Mike Swisher. In spite of many setbacks we really had a pretty good team. The Shelton Invitational showed our own Curt Cheney placing second in the pole vault and Dick Shrum setting a new SHS record of 6' forthe high jump. Curt Cheney would probably have gone on to the district and state meets but a shoulder injury held him back from greater heights. Judging from this year's junior high track squad, that went undefeated right up till the district meet, next year's squad will be even more balanced and could 7 l l well be an ample foe for any competitor. Meet the Swingers, the S!-lb' Swingers A bright spot in this year's sports program at SHS was the girls' tennis team. Under the direction of Mrs. Ruth Willard, the team went undefeated throughout the entire season, marking Shelton's first league championship in any sport in recent years. This was a great tribute to the team. The only close match our girls experienced was the first one of the season against North Mason. The team this year was com- posed mostly of seniors but there were two underclassmen. With the aid of a fine junior-varsity program, the team should be in for another fine season next year. The boys' tennis team found the going pretty rough the first part of the season but came on strong toward the end to mold together a final four win and three loss record. For a while it looked as though the team was going to be without a coach, with last year's coach gone and no new one at the moment. However, at the last moment, Mr. Dick Morton came in to take over an inspiring bunch of net hopefuls. With few seniors on the team this year, there should be a well-trained team next year. The '68 golf team, led by Mike McDowell, had a good aver- age and placed second in the league. They missed first place in a play-off match against Central Kitsap by two points, lI3 to III. Shelton golfers were also invited to play at the Tim Higgin's Invitational Golf Match in Bremerton and managed to place a good third among some of the best golfers in the western part of the state. Along with the Invi- tational they also participated in the State Golf Match in Everett for the first time in SHS history. Even after such a good year they are still expecting to do better next year with many boys returning to the team. lt - ...t .. ' ' What in the time of Occupaiivn- 9 If The Teahouse of the August Moon, written by John Patrick was presented by the Shelton High School Drama Depart- ment in a very well-done stage play production. The setting is Okinawa, which when translated means the rope that lies off shore . The time is in the years following World War Il, with the Japanese in control of Okinawa. Okinawa's people were forced to pay tribute to both China and Japan, and sometimes to both at the same time. But in April l, l945 a new conquerer came to Okinawa, and was greeted by people lacking in shame and pretense. This story deals with the trials of the new conquerer, Cap- tain Jeff Fisby, and his experiences in Tobiki Village, Okina- wa. Captain Fisby is gladly welcomed by the people, and in one instance is given a human gift, a geisha girl named Lo- tus Blossom. Captain Fisby is aided by a translation named Sakini, who is a very knowledgeable fellow. Sakini is a big help to Captain Fisby, as he makes easy the talks between himself and the Okinawan people. Captain Fisby is given a specific plan to follow by his super- visor, Colonel Wainwright Purdy ll. Many obstacles get in Fisby's way, such as a Teahouse which is needed to house his geisha girl, Lotus Blossom. But in the end Captain Fisby is finally able to please Colonel Wainwright Purdy ll by showinga Qgn ofdefiniteimprovemenpwim the Qkmawan people. The past three years have been spent with growing enthusi- asm for this, our final year. Our sophomore year was just the beginning of our ambitions and activities. We chose Jerry Sparks as class President, Eldon Allen Vice-President, and Linda Hathaway Secretary. The following year, now more familiar with the High School surroundings, we elect- ed Jerry Sparks class President, Eldon Allen Vice President and Karen Borek Secretary. During our junior year we looked up to the graduating Seniors with an air of mystery and envy and hopes for our senior year to come. When it finally arrived we decided to maintain Jerry Sparks as class President, and elected David Rose Vice-President and Mel- va Thompson Secretary. The many honor students in our class helped make our final year one to be proud of and the many deep-voiced Senior boys enabled us to win the yelling competition at pep assemblies. Among the various activities enjoyed by the Seniors this year were the Senior Ball, with the theme To Sail a Crystal Ship and the Senior Party. Now as another senior year has ended we can look back on a full and prosperous year with hopes and expectations of many years to come.
