Throughout your four years as advisor of the Sagh- alie, you have generously devoted hours ofyour spare time teaching us the fundamentals of picture- taking, layout and design, and writing copy. Whenever we had a deadline to meet, you were there to help and encourage us. We overexposed and underexposed our pictures and became frustrat- ed when we could not think ofthe right word for copy. Without your inspiration and reassurances, we could never have reached our goals. Through your will and determination the Saghalie staff was organized into a class for the first time this year. Because you have been the backbone and founda- tion of the best yearbook yet, we the students of Shelton High School warmly dedicate the 1967 Saghalie to you, Mr. William Steinbacher. We Show Determination Those responsible for stimulating pep and enthusiasm are members ofthe Pep Staffand Pep Club. These two bodies worked together as they strove for their most important goal - cheering the team to victory. ln doing this they organized and supported Rooter's Buses. For away games girls made cookies which supplied the team with a relief from starvation after their hard workout. A new idea inspired by Pep Club was Rally VVeek which eon- sisted of daily activities leading up to the first league basketball game. Added to the club was a new feature of uniforms for all the members. This showed to all the unity ol' Pep Club and the support they gave to their team. PEP CLUB President Bette Cowan. Homecoming ood Excitement, Spirit Put a lot of school spirit, enthusiasm, creativeness, determina- tion and Shelton High School Students together, and what will you get? One of the Hnest homecomings ever put forth, And surely this is what the 1967 homecoming was. A Fitting start to the occasion was an assembly where the ac- tivities were outlined and the mood set for the events to come. The Highlight was the picking of the homecoming court: Sue Valley, Sylvia Sund, and Candy Nutt. With people looking in manholes, behind rocks and almost every other imaginable place, the hunt for the queen's crown was on. 'fClash Day brought bright colors mixed with plaids, stripes, Howers and polka dots into the halls of Shelton High School. Thursday night the blare of horns, sound of music, laughter and shouting was heard as the traditional bonfire was set off. Friday was the day all looked forward to. At the pep assembly the students waited with mounting anticipation for the crown- ing of the homecoming queen. As drums rolled, each expectant girl opened a box, one containing a red rose, the symbol of the queen's reign, It was found by Sylvia Sund who became the 1967 homecoming queen. That night the mighty Climbers played West Bremerton, and although we lost, our victorious spirit was evident. And the end to a perfect homecoming week was London Mist, the after-game dance with the Liverpool Five. v T 41 Homecoming Royalty Queen Sylvia Sund Princesses Candy Nutt Sue Valley Escorts Bob White Tom Villines Rick McComb 1 fn 1:91 Aff. With twelve years of study to guide them, the graduating Seniors will step into life on their own and try to meet these goals and challenges. The class of '67 upon entering Shelton High School in 1964 elected Tom Villines President, Candy Nutt Secretary and Dick Knautz Board of Control Representative. Then Sophomores, it didnit take them long to find their section ofthe gym or their section of the audi- torium for assemblies. joining into the school activities and participating in sports, the class of 767 found themselves in their Junior year. For a successful year as juniors they chose their President Dick Knautz, Vice President Mike Carper, Secretary Patty Mell, and Bill Mendenhall as Honor- ary-Sergeant-at-Arms. With only a year ahead ofthem until graduation 238 students stepped into their Senior year at SHS. Jim Biehl President, Sherry Jeffery Vice President, and Secretary Beth Crumb led them through a successful and memorable year. The Seniors being very enthusias- tic about their last year at Shelton High School participated in many activities and helped heighten the school spirit. Among their various activities were The Senior Ball and the Senior Party. With the class motto: HDependence has clouded our past, independ- ence lights our futurefl the class of ,67 entered into the Shelton High School gym on the night ofjune 6th with many thoughts of the past and for the future. Sponsored hy the Senior Class but masterminded by Jim Biehl, Richard Brewer, and Glenn Van Blaricom, it unfolded the realisms ofa unique world. In the midst ofthe dancing couples there was erected a mass of peculiar shaped silver items that formed a lunar pedestal. Emhellishing the walls were hizarre murals and paintings created by highly imaginative minds. Each of these original works was laheled and priced for purchase hy culturally mind- ed couples. To give an illusion ol' a whirling atmosphere. col- ored lights were reflected on foil walls. lhroughout the cou- ples' expedition they danced to ollnbeat music produced hy the Shadows, an intriguing comho from Portland. Enthusiastic patrons envisaged an optical cake, which was heartily masti- cated. A held ol op art garnished the expanse of the cakeg the couples quenched their thirst with a tangy punch. Later in the evening came the moment that all had been wait- ing for with mounting anticipation the announcement of the King and Queen, Tom Yillines and Bette Cowan were se- lected hy a yote ol' those present. As a climax many couples journeyed to Olympia or Tacoma to conclude their excursion ofthe Filth Dimension. M! J t fy., t 'tw . .i -1: tw t v xx is 12 L!i2zir-fwdiwiw wma! S, lfmmf wwf-'flu X, . .. President Tom Villines Vice-President Steve Looney Secretary Shayne Larson Treasurer Glenn Van Blaricom H School, Suggestions, Students, Senate To improve our school for a better place to study, learn, and participate, students voice themselves by electing senators from their Civics, U.S. History, and Vocational Guidance classes. Much time, effort, and hard work is contributed to the schooland fellow students by these senators. The senatorial system was introduced in 1964-1965 along with a rough draft of the school constitution by President Lar- ry Powell. In 1965-66 under President Ed Keenan the consti- tution was perfected, adopted, and approved. The perfected constitution provided for a one house system fsenateb with an advisory board. Also, after the senate is the Senate Executive Board, which acts to make the senate seem more smoothly. The purpose of the Senate is to let the students know that they have a voice in our government. The students can make suggestions on how to improve our school in activities and in our governmental system. new cmistiH1tiorTwenTTnto eflitfthis year more than ever before. A.S.B. officers found that student government could help our school in many ways. Projects carried on under the new constitution included such activities as installing a soda-pop machine, dedicating a pic- ture to Mr. Hermes Cformer S.H.S. principalj, grading and graveling of the student parking lot, bringing in guest speak- ers, sending officers to leadership school, and laying a solid foundation for the future students of Shelton High School. RU llfix Citizenship-Its Privileges, Duties Each year three klunior girls and four .junior boys are selected by the American Legion Auxiliary Units to attend Evergreen Girls' and Boys' State on the basis of citizenship and physical htness. Girls' and Boys' State is a practical application of American- ism and good citizenship. lts purpose is to provide citizenship and training for girls and boys of high school age in every Constituent Department of the American Legion Auxiliary to afford them an opportunity to live together as self-governing citizens, to inform them about the duties, privileges, rights, and responsibilities of American citizenship in order that they may understand and participate in the functioning of their government and to help them grasp the meaning ofsome ofthe responsibilities which they must assume when they become adults. Girls' state was held on the campus of the Central Washing- ton State college in Ellensburg. Boys' State was held at Gon- zago University in Spokane. The Class of 67' was presented at the 1966 Evergreen Girls' State by Betty Cowan, Kathy Bolender, and Tammy Tem- breull. Girls'-Boys' Clubs Boosting Activities This years Boys,-Girls, Clubs are headed by Jon Armstrong and Carolyn Batstone. Striving to make this year the best, they had many successful projects. Girls,-club seemed to be going all year long. With their Friendship committee at the first of the year, they seemed to get the new, unfamiliar Shelton High School students off to a friendly start. Later in the year the Tolo proved to be an excit- ing evening with one hundred ten couples attending. In April the Father-Daughter Banquet was held, and many Fathers enjoyed eating dinner with their Daughters. The Boys? Club had a busy year filled with many helpful and pleasant events. Starting out with the Thanksgiving Baskets, the boys helped many unfortunate families through a happy holiday by boosting their spirits. The Mother-Son Banquet drew around one hundred boys and their Nlothers and was very much enjoyed by everyone who attended. The club also performed many other important, successful services for the school. The year closed with the past year full of successful events, interesting meetings, and a fun-filled school year for many Shelton High School students. LEFT TO RIGHT: Mary Walmsley, Sandi Gruver, Debbie Maranville, Leslee LaBissionere, Darleen Gray, Rosanne Gain, Gail Zeigler, Karol Mackey, Q.-Xyey, -lack Smith. Profitable Service By Those Who Care An important part of school life is the service clubs. These are the clubs that work behind the scenes doing things we all bene- Ht from. Oflice Workers devote their study hall periods to helping the various high school offices. These girls, and in some cases boys, pick up slips, answer telephones, hle papers and ofiicial documents, deliver messages and perform many other miscel- laneous duties to assist the secretaries. Assisting the students in checking out books, locating neces- sary research materials, decorating the bulletin boards and numerous other activities that make our school library such an erlicient work center, are theqjobs ofthe Library Club Mem- bers. Linder the direction of Mrs. Rakowicz, these girls give up their study hall periods to help others. Perhaps one ofthe things that students enjoy most are the as- semblies. Providing an interesting program and making all the arrangements is the job ofthe Assemblies Committee headed by Mr. Sund. One club that seldom receives recognition for its efforts is the Stage Crew. Many hours of laboring over scenes which were used in the school plays, the remodeling of the stage this year, and the lighting ofthe Christmas Concert were the duties of the boys this year. Key Club is primarily a service club devoted to the idea of bet- tering the community, with the motto of WWC Build . It is a ,Iunior Kiwanis in conjunction with Clyde Brown and Shelton High School. Key Club is an international organization of which Shelton is a member ofthe Pacific Northwest District. The members performed many services this year. One ofthe more important was the selling of tickets at the various school sports activities. S'I'.M9E CREW: jim Reeder. Action Sparked with enthusiasm and ambition, the American Field Service began its year by meeting Susi Bertuzzi, our new for- eign exchange student at the bus depot. Complete with a cor- sage, movie camera, and forgotten banners, the group traveled to Olympia to pick up the precious passenger. During the year A.F.S. membership increased to over forty active participants working on projects which included three dances, fall and spring work days, stock sales, rummage sale, potluck dinner, the Harlem Clowns game, and A.F.S. Week. A.F.S. VVeek activities were an Ugly Couple Contest, a chill- ing muddy soccer game, an Olympic Night, and a thrilling movie. To climax the week, the A.F.S. assembly was held with three guest foreign students participating, followed by a suc- cessful dance. Completing A.F.S.7s purpose, Bruce Wilson had traveled to New Zealand as an exchange student, in December he arrived at Sea-Tac, met by a bus load of excited students. A.F.S. was guided by co-leaders Tom Villines and Bette Cowan and ad- vised by Harold Wilson assisted by Clyde Ruddell. 4 4-N . T ii,, will Z H K N . .El lf T . After be- coming a Senior. a student is soon immersed in fund raising activities and various other plans. During the fall members sell football programs as their main source of income. One ofthe most worthwhile projects of Honor Society is the two S5200 scholarships, which are prime examples ofthe earnest desire of members to attain higher education. Developing Skills, Culture And Sport Foreign language clubs add a great deal to our school by let- ting the students continue their education after school and at noon. By participating in these activities, many of which are associated with that particular country, students become more aware oftheir foreign language. The French Club, or Ze Cerclchfmnczzzix' as the French students know it, was organized last year by Mrs. Mildred Kreger. lt engages not only in activities of French origin but in support- ing activities such as bake sales and car washes. Their many activities included a trip to a French restaurant, a dinner for the members and their parents, and a picnic at the end of the vear. The Latin Club, with Mrs. Charlotte Hilligoss as advisor. also participates in many activities throughout the year. They are well-known for their cookie sales at Christmas and Easter, their Forest Festival rloat in May. and their paper Syfnilline Leazfex. Perhaps the best known event is the Latin Club Flow- er Festival held in May. This event is always received enthusi- astically by all ofthe students. All of these things have made this elub well-known for getting things done. The German Club. or litfzm-cfzcz' Vcrvm, has for its advisor Nlrs. Sheila Rogers. Activities such as the Cerman Club Hat Day, German Bake Sale, Oktoberfest celebration, Christman Kaffeeklatsch, a new supplement to the Cerman Club Cook- book, and the Karneval celebration were scheduled through- out the sehool year. Outside activities included dinner at the Bavarian in Tacoma and a picnic in the spring. Another inter- esting note adding to the fun was that all meetings were eon- dueted in German. Among the activities that are superbly mastered by these energetic girls are volleyball, basketball, skating and swim- ming. At football and basketball games these girls can be found in the stands busily selling candy and coffee to the avid sports fans. Each year there is at least one Olympic AA League playday held at one of the schools. This provides many girls with an opportunity to meet new girls who share the same interests. Shelton hosted the league playday in November this year. To earn her letter in G.A.A., each girl must 'accumulate 500 points throughout the year. These include points for meetings, extra activities, selling at games, a picnic, and sportsmanship. The Girls' Athletic Association is ardently advised by Mrs. Ruth Willard. The officers for the year were President Patty Mell, Vice President Lori Godwin, Secretary Leaha Swayze, and Treasurer Joan Barnett. Afnewfadvisor,fMr. Richard Morqon and a large number of student participants made this yearis riHe club one of the best. The large turnout, sixty-one members, thirteen of these being girls, and a well-liked advisor and Keith Jackson as Rifle club president, Rick Blacker as Vice president, and Linda Trat- nick, as secretary-treasurer all contributed qualifying records. The shootoff went well with Mike Bunnell first place, Bob Cleveland Second place, Wayne Sushak third place, Curtis Bennett fourth place, and Mike Sliva fifth place. Promoting Athletes L'To develop mental alertness through physical conditioning in sports and character through leadership, example and unityf' is the motto ofthese two clubs. The organization, S Club is composed of approximately fifty boys who have earned at least one letter certificate for any high school interscholastic sport. The S Club activities for the year include making and selling popcorn at the basketball games and selling pens with the dates of all the basketball games printed on them. The money that was raised was used to purchase red sports jackets for our various high school athletic teams. Mr. Wright is the faculty advisor for this organization. Offi- cers are: David Mendenhall, presidentg Rick Marshall, vice- presidentg Chief Clayton. secretary-treasurerg and jim Borst, sergeant at arms. Scarlet S Club is an outgrowth of GAA. and girls tennis. Each member must have earned at least one letter in sports or GA..-X. Presentations were k'Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs , HA Christmas Dream, The Melodrama, and Pinochio. ln March a new facet of Childrens' theatre was explored when the dramatics department ventured forth to perform a play before thechildren of Chehalis and Olympia. Traveling for a full day shed some light on the students as to what a theatrical career would entail. Preparing these plays the drama students concentrate on ways to stimulate the childrenis imagination. This they find to he a real challenge and a very rewarding experience. If it weren't for the well rounded ability ofklerry Sparks, the height of Chris Close and Mike LalNIarsh, and the shooting ability ofjan Donaldson and Bill Daniels, the team couldn't have shown the ability they did. And the Pep Staff. Pep Club, and the Spectators provided the spirit, support, and enthusiasm they needed. The Climbers played their best game against Central Kitsap in the seCond-to- the-last game of the season. Before this game was played, Central was Hrst in the league, and Shelton was tied for last. With only one second left the score was 68 to 67. Then Jerry Sparks was fouled. He had one foul shot plus the bonus. Jerry shot the hrst and made it. Then he sank the winning point. Peter Sophomore Class Officers President Bud Tuson Vice-President Bill Daniels Secretary Rita Nutt Bewildered, Puzzled, Bothered, Perplexed Bewildered and belittledl That is a sophomore on the Hrst day of school - bewildered because they think they will never find their next class, and belittled because they are the young- est members ofthe student body. This has been quite a change from their year before, for as freshmen they were looked up to by underclassmen. Leading the sophomores through the year were President Bud Tuson, Vice President Bill Daniels and Secretary Rita Nutt, who worked together with their advisor Mr. Wilson. Activities for the sophomores as a class were pretty thin due to the fact that they were unaware and unfamiliar with the ac- tivities of our school, but they showed enthusiastic school spirit and great potential for their forthcomingglunior year. just as these underclassmen became accustomed to the small but all important slogan of 'gSenior Courtesyw, their school year drew to a close. Ahead of them is one more year of being 'idictated tow by this saying. For them as seniors they will be able to put Senior Courtesyw to good use. ba 5' -Si tt 'P 5 ,55 if Q Aaro, john fi Q L l , ,Za Adams, Ed is A s i as -this Anderson, Merridee A .gf - . Beginning the year with enthusiasm, the Publications Class made plans and offered suggestions as to the contents of the book. ln October several members of the staff went to a Publications workshop, held at the University of Washington, where they gathered ideas by attending sessions and looking at other year- books. Working together during the year the students were able to combine their ideas and efforts resulting in your Saghalie. Regardless of the weather, every participant on the varsity and ,junior varsity practiced hard every night from 4:00 to 6:00. The boys played their games traditionally on Loop Field and away on other home fields. Climber Fans will all agree that the games were all exciting. We can all be proud of our 767 Baseball team. At the end of the season they placed third in the league. - 1 'Q fs, W 15' ' 1' A M ,. 5,..K,.,vW-W:9ir-w -. was Season Recap SHELTON i l West Bremerton 8 l 3 Port Angeles 2 2 North Thurston 5 9 St. Martins 6 13 South Kitsap 11 7 North Thurston 9 1 East Bremerton 7 12 West Bremerton 9 4 Centralia 12 6 North Kitsap 4 1 Aberdeen 10 0 Aberdeen 5 0 Central Kitsap 8 1 Port Angeles 5 2 South Kitsap 8 8 East Bremerton 7 2 Olympia 3 3 Central Kitsap 5 1 North Kitsap 3 -...Q-.N TYPU W , 5 . .,, , 'K W 'xr N M ' Q I A 'wr I , ' ' -me- fa 'Q X-1 Hmm My--, lm ffl 1.1 fuk wg, M M l2 Q ' l , fl .. Although the boys did not do too well as a team, many of them did outstand- ing individually. Many of the boys went to sub-district and seven of the mighty Climbers went to the District meet. They were Dave Gunter, Chief Clayton, Mike Carper, and the four members of the mile relay team. The relay team tied the school record, though they didn't obtain a Hrst. Next year's team is very promising as the majority of the let- termen were sophomores. One j.V. man to look for in the fu- ture is Gene Avey, who was only j.V. for certain school and league rules. The future looks good too because the j.V.'s never lost a meet. The boys can be commended on their never- ending efforts and their few rewarding triumphs. One major highlight at SHS in track was the Seventh Annual Shelton Invitational. Although Shelton did rather poorly, the meet was a success and the spectators were able to see a new record set for the pole vault. To start the festivities, the Queen's Banquet and Coronation was held Wednesday, May 24, at Nlountain View at 7 p.m. For the First time during Forest Festival, the Drama and Mu- sic Departments presented the musical Showboat. Showboat played Thursday, Friday, and Saturday nights at 8 p.m. in the Junior High Auditorium. The carnival got into full swing on Saturday and was also open Thursday and Friday. Starting at 10 a.m. Saturday the Junior Parade got off to a humorous start. Following the junior Parade was the Paul Bunyan Parade which featured Art Tozier as the legendary character. In the afternoon there were many thrilling and ex- citing events to catch the eye such as the Logger's Show at Loop Field, a Horse Show at the fairgrounds, and an open Colf Tournament at Bayshore Colf Club. Also there were motorcycle races. To top off the evening, there was a dance with the Wailers providing the music. The itinerary of the Queen and her Court included the follow- ing: the Covernorls Banquet, where the Queen was crowned as Nliss Keep Washington Green by Governor Evans, travel- ing around to Western Washington Kiwanis Clubs' luncheons and dinner meetings, explaining about and describing Forest Festival. The Queen and her Court with the chaperone Miss Alma Burke traveled to several different out-of-town festivals and parades throughout the spring and summer months. A few of the festivals were the Rhododendron Parade at Port Townsend, the Bear Festival in McCleary, and Lakefair in Olympia. Entering the Final port of their high school career, the Seniors who attended their traditional Senior Class Party embarked upon an evening of nautical fun at the Tyee. Couples were swinging and swaying to the music ofthe guest sailors the Ascots. Periodically they docked for portside entertainment or savory provisions from the galley cooks. After their adventu- rous and memorable voyage, all seafarers set sail for their port of call. Many thanks should be steered to our capable parents, who navigated our cruise. - I ?
