For some, if was iusf anofher year of foil, buf for us if was somefhing we had been preparing for, for eighf seemingly unending years. Af an informal gafhering we mef our execufive board. Mr. Harry E. Fowler, our presidenf, and Mr. Percy Kingsley, our producfion manager, addressed a few inspirafional fhoughfs fo us. Affer some brief infroducfory remarks and direcfions, Assisfanf Producfion Manager, Mr. Karl Tarbell, classified us according fo our abilify and merif. There were varied inferesfs in our group: some leaned foward adminisfrafive courses: some, secrefarial: while ofhers preferred specialized occupafions. Our firsf year was fo be primarily a basic insfrucfion course. We were assigned fo an affernoon shiff where fhe hours were rafher awkward and proved fo be unpopular. lf prevenfed us from becoming acquainfed wifh our fellow workers and from parficipafing in fheir social acfivifies. In spife of fhese handicaps we accomplished a greaf deal and sfill had fime for recreafional acfivifies among ourselves. We selecfed a few associafes fo lead us in our social evenfs: Rifa Saulnier as Presidenf: Janef Wakefield, Vice-Presidenf: Donald Preece, Secrefary: and Roberf Didsbury, Treasurer. Of our social acfivifies fhe freshman social leff fhe greafesf impression on our minds. Besides dancing we enioyed fable fennis, Chinese checkers and cards. On Armisfice Day Colonel Lockharf addressed us in an informal manner and immediafely won fhe affenfion of fhe audience. The Chrisfmas assembly, composed of a play and recifafions given by members of our class, was mosf enioyable and enferfaining. A handicraft club under fhe supervision of Miss Verreff kniffed scarfs and helmefs for fhe R. A. F. Mr. Tisi, of fhe Business Deparfmenf, was a new execufive fhis year and became very popular wifh fhe feminine employees. Every six weeks we received wages consisfenf wifh our individual accomplishmenfs. We were all released for a vacafion in June, which we needed and appreciafed. Sepfember, l94l, found us back af work wifh renewed energy and confidence. lf was indeed an agreeable surprise fo know we would now be employed on fhe morning shiff. We had pafienfly waifed a whole year for, fhis furn of evenfs. This year surpassed our lasf in hard work and recreafional ad- vanfages. We discovered all fypes of falenf among our fellow workers, which were displayed af assem- blies fhroughouf fhe year. The members of our class fhaf we chose fo lead us in our acfivifies were: William Didsbury as Presidenfg Donald Preece, Vice-Presidenf, Janef Wakefield, Secrefary: Roberf Ellis as Treasurer. In December dark clouds of conflicf appeared on fhe horizon of our nafion and on fhe eighfh of fhaf monfh war was declared againsf Japan. This inspired us fo work harder, for we felf keenly our responsibilify in increasing our efforf fo achieve vicfory. Many of fhe older employees leff for fhe armed forces, and many more were fo follow as fheir defermenfs expired on fheir l8fl1 birfhdays. To aid fhe war efforf, a falenf assembly was held in February, and fhe proceeds were invesfed in a war bond presenfed as a giff fo fhe planf. The planf's newspaper, formerly mimeographed, was prinfed for fhe firsf fime fhis year. Those of our class who helped fo make fhis new form of our newspaper a success were: John McGrafh, Bernyce Loper, Nafalie Forsberg and Janef Wakefield. Mr. Finn, a 27 Glafu favorife foreman, leff for fhe armed forces in April of fhaf year. He was popularly known as fhe coach of our Galloping Gaels foofball 'ream which defeafed our rival, The Derby Manufaciuring Com- pany , fhaf year. He was ably assisfed by fhe hordes of managers whom he hired one day and fired fhe nexf. To him we may dedicafefhaf quofafion, Gone buf nof forgoffen, for fruly we shall never forgef his ingenious jokes and fhe inimifable poems composed by fhose inclined fo indulge in gum chewing in his deparfmenf. Mr. Esposifo, a new supervisor, now reigned over fhe Biological and Physics Laborafories. He will be remembered for consfanf repefifion of Do you gef fhe drif+ or shall I snow again? Winfry mornings were warmed by consfanf hof-foo'I's . Of course fhis slowed down producfion buf kepf Miss Efimefz's feef warm. The vacafion fhis year was greefed wifh more en- fhusiasm fhan before because more responsibilify had been placed on our shoulders. lf was on a cloudy day in Sepfember of I942 fhaf we refurned fo our dufies af fhe planf. New work and new insfrucfors furnished fhe variefy so essenfial fo life. Miss Navarreffa became very popular wifh her informal manner and affifude. Few of us, forfunafe enough fo see if, will ever forgef her fruly dramafic presenfafion of Now Voyager . If M. G. M. had sighfed her, fruly we would have suffered fhe loss of a perfecfly good Spanish insfrucfor. Miss Smifh could sfill be heard frighfening fhe new workers wifh her baffle cry, Fall in! We experienced laborers had, of course, become used fo if, and had faken if as a maHer of course. And fhose swelfering walks fo fhe far disfanf baseball diamond were welcome momenfs of relaxafion in spife of fhe facf fhaf frequenfly we were forced fo make up fime losf when obiecfs of inferesf lured us from fhe direcf roufe fo and from fhe field. Many mafhemaficians lapsed info silence as Miss Rulofson repeafed her favorife quofafion: There will be no furfher communicafing in fhis room . ln fhe algebra and geomefry divisions, amazing resulfs were obfained, especially when equals were subfracfed from equals! l This year saw fhe deparfure of Mr. Murray info fhe Navy. We all missed his pleasanf personalify and successful coaching of our baskefball feam. Many of our fellow workers also leff, - among fhem: John Hogan, Joseph Jefferson, Norman Forsfer, and Alfred Phillips. We deeply felf fhe loss of fhese companions as fhey composed fhe sfronger parf of our foofball feam. The Junior Prom was for us an oufsfandi-ng evenf. Many affended bofh fo dance and fo appreciafe fhe novel decorafions adapfed from a fypical Spanish fiesfa. William Didsbury, Fred Durrschmidf, Rifa Regan, and Roberf Didsbury were our officers. ln June, once more we embarked on our annual vacafion. We all had an excifed feeling as we sfarfed our fourfh year af fhe planf. This year, unlike fhe ofhers, work commenced fhe laffer parf of Sepfember due fo an epidemic of infanfile paralysis. We were considered senior workers now. Assuming fhe aspecf of older employees, we saunfered from one room fo fhe ofher, fhinking fhaf we would have a rackef . lf wasn'f long before we realized fhaf we had fo work fwice as hard as in previous years fo keep up wifh fhe demands of our foremen. Yes, our work was difficulf and firing af fimes, buf fhere were numerous incidenfs fhaf enlivened our everyday roufine. There was quife a sfir when fhe feminine employees found fheir new boss fo be an affracfive 28 Glafu young man, Mr. Mulak. As lime wenl on, we learned lhal our new supervisor was one nol lo be played wilhg 'For he didn'l believe in wasling lime. We shall never lorgel Miss Lee. To her we owe our knowledge of Americanism. Now and lhen she gave us a few momenls ol enioymenl as she relaled lo us lhe legends behind numerous holidays such as Halloween, Sl. Valenline's Day, Sl. Palrick's Day. elc. All ol us worked under Miss Rae as well as Miss Lee. These lwo deparlmenls were essenlial and everyone was required lo spend a parl ol each day in lhem. We shall always be lhankful lo Miss Rae lor her unending palience in lislening lo our oral reporls while hall of us spoke indislinclly and were unprepared. We received much encouragemenl from lhe various morale assemblies given for lhe mosl parl by a group known as lhe Oral Expression Class presided over by Mr. Demarco. As we became more and more involved in lhe war, a cry wenl oul lor more young men lo enlisl. Our mem- bers were reduced considerably as we said good-by lo Roberl Didsbury, Simon Aragi, Fred Durrschmidl, Zenny Pawlowski, Fred Blakely, Paul Bodyk, and Donald Mulry. Our loolball leam won more viclories lhrough lhe unliring ellorls of Coach Conklin. Even our baskelball leam improved considerably, al- lhough we losl lhe lirsl game in lhe lournamenl, probably due lo lhe lacl lhal our slar performer, Zenny Pawlowski, had ioined lhe Navy. The brighlness ol Oclober 2lsl suddenly became cloudy for us when we heard lhal Mr. Fowler, our beloved presidenl, was laken from us. The loremen will never lorgel his sympalhelic underslanding nor lhe employees his lairness in all mallers. A few weeks laler we learned lhal Mr. Kingsley was lo be our new presidenl, and Mr. DeMarco and Mr. Glendon, lhe new co-produclion managers. Chrislmas was celebraled wilh a dance given by our class in lhe audi- lorium of lhe planl. Those unlorlunale ones who were lilling special orders had lo work a few hours al nighl and so missed oul on lhis gala evenl. The mislleloe played a prominenl role in lhe success ol lhis affair. ln March lhe honor workers were announced: Mary Mycek, Valediclorian, and Jane Elimelz, Salulalorian. May saw lhe presenlalion ol our annual senior play under lhe capable super- vision ol Mr. DeMarco. Our Thespians were: Anloinelle Mangini as Janey: William Hilchko as Sluarlg Rila Saulnier as Bunny: Elmer McNelly as Tommy: Mabel Koller as Annabelle: Dominick Papale as Roger Wilson: Edward Aiello as Marlin Richardson: and Joyce Kane as Alice Harvey. .Class Ollicers were William Didsbury, Fred Durrschmidl, Rila Regan, and Harold Hine. As lhis year drew lo a close, a feeling ol remorse swepl us, lor our group was scallered. Some joined lhe armed forces, olhers accepled more responsible posilions in olher planls. Our experiences had been ol greal value in preparing us for lhese new dulies. We hoped lhal in some small way our eFlorls would help lo end lhe mighly conllicl which separaled us.
