A less friendly gesture was the 8-3 defeat the SHELTON soft ball team handed the Brisbane Blazers. As the USS SHBLTON got underway and drew away from the hundreds of Australians bidding us farewell from the docks, we couldnt help but recall the wonderful experiences we'd enjoyed over the past week. DARWIN Darwin, the principal port and capital of the North- ern Territory, was our last port of call in Australia. Situated on the Northwest tip of the Arnhem Land Peninsula, it boasts a fine natural harbor. The sur- rounding -territory contains some of the largest cattle stations in the world and vast mineral resources, in- cluding uranium. The most noticeable difference encountered in the local scenery is caused by a small white termite. This pest, which thrives in Darwin's tropical climate, makes it necessary for the townspeople to construct their houses on high iron stilts. These stilts also serve as protection against the annual floods. Though small, with a population of 9,500, the town of Darwin extended us the welcome we will always associate with the people of Australia. Our departure from Darwin marked the end of a visit none of us will forget.
