Well they took their turn in manufacturing vac tory one week and being handed out defeat the next The team wound up with a 3 4 record in the win loss column defeating Prairie Farm Turtle Lake and Clear Lake while falling victim to Chetekc Bruce Clayton and Cameron This appears mediocre from a statistical standpoint admirable however when taking into con slderatlon the handicaps A large amount of credit must be given Coaches Ellis Axon and Lyle Hartwig They did a superb job with B Erickson T Brown the maternal at hand most of it light and lacking experi ence To overcome this they instilled plenty of spirit and fight Enough at least for three wins out of the first four contests played These games were won on the merit of a stubborn defense and a light but w llmg backfleld The old injury bugaboo then reared its ugly head and ly halted Shell Lake football was at its best against Turtle Lake The Turtles heavier by at least ten pounds per man had been reputed to be the power of the league That night their vaunted power was throttled completely once the game was underway they never knew exactly what hut them Moreover the Lakersv' tackling was vicious their blocking crisp the line play superb as they scored from the outset and won going away Another pleasing aspect was the loyll support ac corded the team by students and adults alike lt must be said they rooted as loud in defeat as in victory Nor shall we forget a final word of praise for Jam Otis Masterlohn and Warren Livingston the tape and water boys A number of seniors bowed out of the football pic ture Frannie Hall a fine guard John Clanton depend able three year lineman Terry Brown pass snaggsng end Paul Schaefer a scat back Eugene Christiansen triple threat half Don Rydberg another fine lineman and Roman Jacobson a lanky end These boys leaving and those returnmg to wage another grid campaign need have few regrets for the season of i948 While lackmg m other essentials the spirit nerve and determination were present And after all these three things make football P Schaeffer Strickland C Rylander 30 ,gl If . , 9 gif I .,,,. . Believe us, it wasn't intentional. And so on this page of the 1949 high school annual we will attempt to do our utmost to rectify that negligence. This moves us to dedicate this page to that sometimes zany, but always loyal member of society ---------- the football Fan. Action, and plenty of it, is his meat. He cares for nothing better than to sit in near zero weather, try to wear out his cast iron lungs, and quarter-back both teams at the same time. His all burning interest is football ---------- especially the winning variety. Fans, in the last few years, have been under severe ridicule from the general public, coaches, and officials for a number of things. Unsportsmanlike conduct in the treatment of other teams, booing of official's decisions, throwing large sums of money into the ready hands of gamblers, putting the pressure on grid mentors because of losing teams. These are just a few of the misdemeanors the fan is charged with. Well, true or not, he is the boy who controls the purse strings, or the sport from a financial standpoint. And it seems as if he just has to have his say. In defense of the fan though, in some towns, such as ours, he comes to see the sport played, enjoys it, and doesn't let his over- enthusiasm get the best of him. He cheers so loudly during the time the game is in progress, he has little voice or ambition left to run out on the field and collar the official. These fans are to be compli- mented. And so to the football fan we say: May your enthusiasm never slacken, may your purse strings never tighten, and may your vocal chords be as loud and lusty next season as they were the year before FIRST ROW Ogilvie Dahl Clanton Erikson Hawkmson Christiansen F Hall Strickland Rounce Rylander Schaufer SECOND ROW Livingston R Masterjohn Knapp Messenger C Hall Smith Zillmer Rydberg Jacobson J Masterlchn THlRD ROW Coach Hartwig Quam Plahn Parks Hanson Todd Coach Axon 31 1 l ' 1 ' I I l 1 U 1 -' 1 - I 1 .
