special eoucatlon Wilbur Larsen Sheldon has the only Special Ed- ucation program for high school students in Eugene. Students at- tend classes in the morning. In the afternoon they Work at school or in the community. Classes and jobs together provide necessary knowledge and experience for the future of the students. Florence Mallery Creighton Harrison ants Ano cnafts Arts and crafts classes en- couraged students to ex- press their sometimes hid- den creativity. Handmade artifacts of everything from clay dragons to cot- ton-weave material deco- rated the walls and show- cases throughout the school. Besides being good train- ing for the students, the products of the classes were interesting and oft- en humorous changes of scene for passing viewers. Patricia Gisborne SUSSI1 Iackson

lnOUSU2lAl ARIS Marvin Flowerdew Power mechanics was a popular course offered for the first time this year. Students learned to take apart and assemble engines, including those of their own cars. Another new program was the work-study situa- tion in which students spent the first half of the day at Sheldon taking academic courses, while in the afternoon they reported to various jobs around the city to learn while working and earning wages. Mr. Mattila instructs Pete Forsman and Iohn Brown on the metal lathe. Wesley Lathen CRIVGR GCUCAUOD Students had -'15 fewer accidents after a Driver's Education course at Sheldon High. Beginning driv- ers were taught everything from basic traffic rules to the finer points of parallel parking. In the fall the entire school received a lesson in fast stopping by way of a live demonstration featuring Sheldon students at an outdoor assembly. Stuart Miller

French, Spanish, and German were offered to an ever increasing number of internationally minded students. From the Language Lab came the sounds of gutteral whis- pers and trilling R's, with an oc- casional rousing song drowning out the rest. Ellen Clausen fonelqn language Alberta Lopez home GCGHCITIICS Alina Stevenson The cooking classes were at it again, proving their culinary skills by preparing full course dinners and exotic desserts. For the child-care unit, real chil- dren were used as classroom examples. The girls made dolls and toys for them to use. In addition to making the usual sewing projects, classes also helped with costumes for drama productions. Nlarolyn Barker
