In spite of a respectable I0-8 season record, it was a disappointing year for Irish basketball fans. With ex- perienced returning varsity players and excellent re- serves from last year's IV team, it looked as if the Irish would go far. The starting team showed great talent with seniors Dave Naessens, Earle Wicklund, Dave Martin, Dean Wright, and junior Dan Curtis. They played like champions during many games, but frequently had trouble in the closing minutes. Sheldon's chance for district championship was lessened when Dave Martin broke his foot three-fourths of the way through the season. However, the Irish were instrumen- tal in deciding which teams would go to state. Next yearis team will get a big push from the six re- turning lettermen. Dan Curtis, most valuable player and all-district 3rd team choice, will figure importantly in the Irish title bid. 145

Ron Wilkins shoots. Coach Diddock gives instructions during time-out. Coach Roger Diddock said of this yearis IV basket- ball team, They,re rough, tough, and hard to bluff. This scrappy team, though not particularly tall or fast, fought its way to a respectable lO win- l2 loss season record. Bob Goettsch, Mark Peterson, and Gary Prohaska consistently led the team in scoring, while Dave Schwieger and Ron Wilkins were grabbing most of the rebounds, Coach Did- dock singled out Gary Prohaska as the most im- proved player. With the experience they gained this year, IV players will figure importantly on next year's Varsity team.
