chess IUB By the heads-up playing of Steve Meyn, Terry Walls, Ger- ald Holt, Iohn Fuller, and Alan Reed, the Sheldon Chess Club got off to a good start. Steve Elder, Bruce johnson, and Iohn Iolley also contributed wins, but the chess club- fal- tered while playing last yearls champions. In addition to inter-school competition the club hada system of challenge games between members. Fuller, Steve Meyn, lean Iolley, Bruce Iohnson, Alan Terry Walls, Gerald Holt, George Walls. Practice climbs on the Coburg cliffs and the basalt columns on Skinner's Butte prepared the Irish Mountaineers for their October climb of Mt. Washington. Five members reached the 7,802 foot summit. Neither rain, nor sleet, nor snow could stop our energetic climbers, however, winter climbing was limited to the Co- burg rocks and Skinner's Butte. ROW 2: Marsha Sherman, Maria McKinley, Christine Allen, Carol Ballew, Valerie Anderson, Ianet Hall, Linda Thalman. ROW 3: Connie Wiles, Carol Willing, Ioyce Hansen, Amy Ward, Becky Giltner, Nancy Fraser. Debbie Prince, Sheldonls AFS student to Germany and Rosemarie Beusch, AFS student from Switzerland. In October, Ioyce Hansen and Marsha Sherman were selected as Sheldon's ap- plicants for the Americans Abroad Program. American Field Service students from North Eugene, South Eugene, Thurston, and junction City high schools spoke at the AFS Assembly in February. Another speaker was Debbie Prince, a Sheldon student who went to Germany last sum- mer. To raise the 31,500 needed to exchange students with a foreign country, the club sponsored the AFS Dinner, sold programs at the musical, and helped in an all school talent show. In Iune, the Club was host to over thirty exchange students on their way to New York, the first lap of their trip home. Debbie Prince and Rosemarie Beusch, mistresses of ceremony.

Members of the Distributive Education Club of America gained experience in salesmanship by operating the school store before school and during both lunches, sell- ing school supplies and goodies The profits went into the student body fund.
