Kneeling: Mgr. John Determan, Coach Wes Lathen. The Sheldon basketball team, like the football team, worked hard and played it's way into statewide ranking. But, like the football team, suffered misfortune toward the close of the season. Under head coach Wes Lathen, the squad narrowly missed in it's bid for the state tournament by losing to North Eugene, Qwho later took the state charnpionshipj and dropping a crucial game to Thurston. Having previously beaten North, the team was picked to take the district championship with relative ease. As the season ended the Irish were left in third place, and home from the state playoffs. The basketball team was blessed with many outstanding players including: Neil Lathen, Jim Richardson, Ted Norman, and Dave Dingman. Neil Lathen was voted Most Valuable Player, and Jim Richardson was voted Most Inspirational Player by their teammates.
