A yearbook is the fondest and most treasured memory of a student s high school years It re minds us of the teachers classmates activities events and sports which we knew and were a part Advisor of us as students It 18 no small task to plan and make a yearbook as anyone who has gone over the path of making one will tell you but we believe the result that of creating a book which will be the storehouse of memories for us in years to come to be well worth all the energy that we have put forth We wish to take this opportunity to thank Mr Lechner and the faculty for their con tinued help and guidance throughout the year All will be a guide for all of us in the days to come And finally, to all the Senior Classes in the years to come, we wish you the best ever and may your Senior Year be both happy and profitable at Sheldon High. Memorzes 0 the Past ln the early 1800 s what rs now our thnvmg lrttle town of Sheldon with almost frve hundred people was a raw prarrte with herds of grazing cattle roaming at will over When lt was known that the Mtssouri Pacrfrc Rarlroad would be bu1lt as is Mr Frank P Andrews passed thrs mformation on to Mr Sheldon Wight Mr Wight and his wrfe Mary V Wight bought this land and pard B E Emerson to survey and stake out the town which was made a matter of record May 20 1881 The townspeople were educatronally minded and they at once planned a school as t e nearest school was at Avola wluch was built tn 1859 The ltnes from withrn three mrles to the County line were made but to no avail as they found that they lacked the lawful number of pupils to organrze a school drstnct whrle thrs fact was betng lamented Old Man Luck moved m a camp of rarlroad workers who had large famrlres These chrldren were qutckly enumerated thus gtvtng the dlstrlct the necessary enrollment to establrsh the much desrred school District No 109 Vernon County was now permanent and was recorded tn Book 34 page 258 Thas land was grven by patent from the Unrted States government to James Easley Keith Lou Mayo and John Phrpps September 12 1884 and thrs was frled September 24 1884 All went well and many of our citizens passed through the portals untrl Superintendent Brandum found rt necessary to add h1gh school subJects Latm so11d geometry Caesar zoology physrcs and psychology were added to the requrred subJects of an accredtted h1gh school 1896 found ten young men and women ready to recerve the coveted drploma Kenney Lotsprech Cordeha Nell Grrffrn Mabel Sharp Clara Belle Clayton Lucy S Seaver Laura M Dejamett Effte Comelra Correll May L Pollard Cordre Lee Hargert and John T Clayton Supertntendent Hale Leedy Brown Marqurs and Marttn have added therr blt to many of our people and by 1912 more room was needed and the old burldrng sold Part of rt IS now the Sam Mam'l residence and four rooms were moved and became part of the Hargert Apartment House where the present Mrs Holmes resldes In place of the memones of bygone days stands our present Alma Mater May the next thtrty years of our school bnng as sweet memones of the past as rt has to Mrs McCutcheon who lmparted these words to us tn such a pleasmg manner ' f , ' ' lt.
