.xgcaclemic lolaorfunified . . . National Merit Scholarship Finalists: Mr. Clay, Tom Trueb, jack Borst, john Shambach, Larry Buchanan, Mr. Sharp. NATIONAL MERIT QUALIFIERS The National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test is administered to juniors in high schools through- out the country each spring. The following fall a second test is given to a few top ranking students from which the scholarship recipients are chosen. SHS had three finalists - jack Borst, john Sham- bach, and Tom Trueb - and one recipient of special commendation, Larry Buchanan. SUMMER INSTITUTE During the summer between junior and senior years, many colleges and universities throughout the nation conduct practical workshops. Boys, and Girls, State held at Indiana University are perhaps the best known. Others, held at Butler and Michi- gan State Universities, are strictly academic, deal- ing with mathematics and the sciences. jacuhy lgmonagfieri Physics really won't make your hair stand up. Does Mr. Kocher really know how the Devil looks? Being a member of the Shelbyville High School faculty certainly is not an easy job. In addition to regular classroom Work, teachers often go beyond the call of duty to help make SHS students better individuals. They devote many hours to such acti- vities as producing plays, sponsoring various clubs and organizations, or chaperoning dances. The stu- dents of SHS are indebted to the members of the faculty for their devoted interest in the leaders of tomorrow. Is it Hedda Simpson or Irene Hopper?

D.A.R. Award - Linda Jones The D.A.R. Award, given annually, is both a statewide and nationwide award. Linda Jones was presented with a pin and certificate signifying her accomplishment. Vestavia Award - Anita Wisker The Vestavia Award originated in 1963. It is a medal given by the Woman's Club and presented to the girl most outstanding in academics. The re- cipient of this award for 1964 was Anita Wisker. llflkrfvl .fdffaim agnrififufe Each year the Shelbyville Rotary Club sends four seniors to the World Affairs Institute in Cin- cinnati, Ohio. The Institute offers students from Indiana, Kentucky, Ohio, and West Virginia an opportunity to learn more about various topics through films, speakers, and discussions. In studying this yearis subject - Latin America and the OAS - Jack Borst, Dennie Iane Haehl, Linda Jones and Mike McRoberts were privileged to hear Ambassador Eugenio de Anzorena, the Mex- ican Ambassador to the United States, speak on the political, economical, and social reforms made in Mexico. Mr. Melvin Davies, the faculty sponsor, accompanied the representatives. , XFSSS.Q5'XLEf3iE
