Does Mr. Kocher really know how the Devil looks? Being a member of the Shelbyville High School faculty certainly is not an easy job. In addition to regular classroom Work, teachers often go beyond the call of duty to help make SHS students better individuals. They devote many hours to such acti- vities as producing plays, sponsoring various clubs and organizations, or chaperoning dances. The stu- dents of SHS are indebted to the members of the faculty for their devoted interest in the leaders of tomorrow. Is it Hedda Simpson or Irene Hopper? .xgcaclemic lolaorfunified . . . National Merit Scholarship Finalists: Mr. Clay, Tom Trueb, jack Borst, john Shambach, Larry Buchanan, Mr. Sharp. NATIONAL MERIT QUALIFIERS The National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test is administered to juniors in high schools through- out the country each spring. The following fall a second test is given to a few top ranking students from which the scholarship recipients are chosen. SHS had three finalists - jack Borst, john Sham- bach, and Tom Trueb - and one recipient of special commendation, Larry Buchanan. SUMMER INSTITUTE During the summer between junior and senior years, many colleges and universities throughout the nation conduct practical workshops. Boys, and Girls, State held at Indiana University are perhaps the best known. Others, held at Butler and Michi- gan State Universities, are strictly academic, deal- ing with mathematics and the sciences. Indiana University and Ball State offer interesting pointers in art and journalism. SUMMER INSTITUTE Front Row: L. jones, C. Meiks, Fox, L. Metz, C. Riemenschneider. 2nd Row: Borst, S. Jenner, G. Chances are if any of these instances sound familiar thatis because theyire all a part of the science courses offered at SHS. In the course of a year many different projects are undertaken by the science students. Biology students may dissect worms and grasshoppers, collect and study leaves, and raise their own plants land animalsj. In chem- istry class students may be making copper sul- fate, oxygen, or metal alloys in their experiments. Mirrors, ice cubes, pulleys and calipers are just a few of the instruments used by the physics stud- ents in their quests for knowledge in studying principals and discoveries that date back as far as Archimedes and Democritus. Proving two triangles congruent, solving an equation by the quadratic formula, and finding the logarithmic solution of the right triangle are just some of the problems encountered by students taking math courses. Math is one of the most popular and inter- esting courses at S.H.S. The different math courses include geometry, the sophomore year, advanced algebra, the junior year, and trigonometry, the senior year. Besides good thinking ability, slide rules, compasses and protractors are all needed by math students in solving their assignments. Memorizing the Preamble to the Constitu- tion and studying other such documents as the Gettysburg Address and the Declaration of Inde- pendence help students to understand better their American Heritage. Government, economics, and American problems are the history courses designed to prepare seniors to assume their duties as United States citizens. Government students learn about the history and basic principles of state and federal government. Buying and selling stocks with imaginary money is just one Way in which economics students gain val- uable knowledge in pecuniary matters. In American problems the seniors study personal and social pro- blems in learning hows to get along with others. The 24 juniors in this year,s class were chosen on the basis of their work and advance- ment in the regular United States history classes during the first semester of the school year. In ad- dition to assigning papers and reports, Mr. Ray Hinshaw helps prepare the students for future studies by acquainting them with a college type testing system using both objective and essay forms. Miss Chenoweth aids her students in Writing themes for Senior Grammar. ENGLISH DEPARTMENT The English classes teach the fundamentals of English grammar and composition during the first semester. In the second semester sophomores study VVorld literature, juniors study American literature, and seniors study English literature In the speech classes, students participate in debates, demonstrations, impromptu speeches, and various other phases of speaking. The journalism classes each semester prepare six copies of the Courier and the Scurrier, an April F oolis copy. Developmental reading, a required course, is aimed at developing better reading habits. By using shadowscopes and films, the students attain a higher rate of reading and better comprehension. 32 .S?LL6!el'lff5 .SYOQQL g0ll,l anguaged Latin students learn about Roman life with the help of special projects. LANGUAGE DEPARTMENT Three foreign languages - French, Spanish, and Latin - are offered to students Wishing to be better equipped to live and communicate in the shrinking world of today. For the first time at SHS the Spanish teacher is a native of a Latin American country. In addition to the regular classroom teaching techniques, the Spanish teacher also uses the language laboratory and Life magazines written in Spanish. Students desiring to learn the language and to study the history of France enroll in the French classes at SHS. Although most of the class work is oral, each student is required to Write a 3,000 word research paper investigating some aspect of France. For the first time in several years SHS offered a fourth year course in Latin. Besides translating parts of Vergilis Aeneid, these pupils were required to complete a project featuring one of their natural abilities. These projects varied from a model of the Circus Maximus constructed from sugar cubes to an original musical composition featuring principles of Roman music. Second year Latin students trans- lated Caesafs Commentaries on the Gallic Wars. COMMERCE DEPARTMENT The Commerce Department, offering the differ- ent business subjects - typing, shorthand, book- keeping, business English, and general business - specializes in preparing the student for the various phases of work in the business World. In the first year of typing and shorthand, the student learns the basic skills. During the second year, the student tries to attain both speed and accuracy through dictation, transcriptions and timed writings. In the second semester, the advanc- ed typing students learn to file and to operate business machines. In the bookkeeping, business English, and gen- eral business courses, students learn bookkeeping, filing, business terminology, business arithmetic, letter Writing, and commercial geography. Two fast typists, Cathy Coleman and Barb Hey, keep in practice by doing extra work for Mrs. Comstock. we jiner 5 in ik Anyone passing through the doors at SHS canit help but notice the attractive display case. The decorations in the display case and the other decorations that adorn the halls during the various times of the year are all under the responsibility and direction of the art department. Besides keep- ing the halls at SHS attractively adorned, the art students keep busy with their own projects. These projects cover a wide area including lettering, ceramics, water colors, figure drawings, interior decorating, and poppy posters. For some of the advanced students a full semester can be used in designing and making their own hooked rugs. Miss VVilliams instructs her beginning drawing class in sketching real life. Ceramics artists add finishing touches to their creations. Mr. Davies helps joe Krick with his project in metal shop. INDUSTRIAL ARTS Todayis modern world calls for individuals with specialized training and education. The vocational education program at SHS trains boys for jobs which will enable them to earn a living upon graduation from high school. Metal and wood- working shops provide an opportunity to learn about tools and equipment. Shop projects give the boys actual practice with the tools while they still are producing something useful for themselves. Future engineers and draftsmen find the mechan- ical drawing classes very useful. These students learn the basic concepts and language of drafting. Advanced students may enroll in Engineering and Architectural Drawing. Safety in the shop and perfection at the drawing board are two of the many points students gain from industrial arts courses. 36 Wackine A Lathing is serious business. Hard work and concentration are necessary in this mechanical drawing class. Will anyone ever forget the excitement of the 1963 Iunior-Senior Prom or our Sophomore Party? Because of hard work and determination, our class of 1964 has achieved many outstanding honors. The largest class to graduate from SHS, we number among our members three National Merit Scholarship finalists, Iack Borst, john Sham- bach, and Tom Trueb, and a national swimming champion, Jean Ann Dellekamp. ' As our graduation grows near, we begin to cherish each remaining day in our high school lives. Some will use high school as a stepping stone to higher education. But no matter what our plans are after graduation, we know that our experiences in learning at SHS will aid us in making plans for the future. WVe leave behind us four wonderful years with the hope that our mistakes may be corrected and our accomplishments remembered. Senior girls supply the brawng senior boys supply the brains! The club, sponsored by Mrs. Clarine Webste1', encourages girls uncertain of their chosen career to become nurses. At Christmas each girl donates an hour of her time at Major Hospital. Since Future Nurses are affiliated with the Junior Red Cross, sponsored by Miss Dorothy Morgan, city school nurse, the Future Nurses also do volun- teer work for the Red Cross at Major Hospital. A Youth Leadership Camp is held each summer at Oxford University, Miami, Ohio, for a Week. Two students, one from Shelbyville and one from a county school, are sent to this camp. Dean, J. Alexander. actually practice the fundamentals and techniques which they learn by putting out the Courier, the school newspaper. VVho, what, When, where, and how are the five basic principles which students must remember in gathering and writing up school news. After the news is typed, it is sent to the printing office, thus each journalism class goes on two field trips- one to the printing office and one to a newspaper office. In order to become Well-rounded reporters, the students study and contribute stories in each of the various departments such as sports, clubs and organizations, editorials, and features. They also learn about the business part of running a paper by selling subscriptions and advertisements to finance the Courier. Miss Marion Chenoweth teaches the class and sponsors the Courier. The club produced three one-act plays this year - The Gimmick, Sob Stuff, and Last Night's Paper. Student directors for the plays were Tanet Fox, Gretchen Sandefur, Shirley O'Mara, Glenn Barnes, and Steve LaBarbera. Along with the hard Work and practice involved in producing a play, members of Mask and Dagger have learned that fun, pleasure, and experience are also pleasant derivatives of participation in a dramatics club. A. A. Thc Girls Athletic Association is an organization to promote participation of S.H.S. girls in athletics. The members participate in both major and minor sports. The major sports are basketball, baseball, volley ball, and bowling. Tumbling and track are the minor sports. The club also introduced swim- ming and ice skating into its schedule this year. By participating in these sports, the girls earn points for pins, letters, and plaques. The purpose of the club is to increase the girls sportsmanship and appreciation for sports. Miss Loretta Taylor, J.H.S. girls' physical educa- tion teacher, and Miss Charlotte Newby, J.H.S. algebra teacher, are co-sponsors of the club.
