When Shelbyville Senior High School opens with registration on September 2, 1959, it will become not just a dream, but a long awaited reality. The first occupants to reside behind its walls at the corner of the McKay and Columbus Roads will be approximately 580 sophomores, juniors, seniors, and over 32 faculty members. With the new furniture and parking lots for faculty and students, several new courses will be offered. Biology, third and fourth year Latin, and agriculture shop will be added to the curriculum. The modern buff, brick building, with its sheets of glass and shining steel, was designed by Lennox, Matthews, Ford, and Associates, and built by 1. Bush and Sons Construction Company with an estimated cost of over 81,050,000 in Both the Ulcl and ew. XVhen the present Shelbyville High School was constructed in 1910-1911, it cost 899,360 Our new high school has cost over ten times that much. The junior High School wing was constructed in 1917 with a cost of 9670,000. Built in 1922, the Paul Cross Cyninasium was enlarged on the east and west in 1941 to include the industrial arts department. XVe, the class of 1959, will never reside in the new school, hut we have many fond memories of six years in an old red brick building on Second Street. The stairs, worn with thousands of feet. and the desks, marked by busy hands, are all part of mn' school life. The new school will be very crisp and clean, quite unlike the dowdy and slightly tarnished form of the old. XVhile new things have so many more modern conveniences, old things have a relaxed air and an informality that is hard to equal. Starting with making simple conversation, the classes move to panel discussions, pantomimes, debates, and parliamentary proceedure in beginning speech. The advanced course includes choral reading, mono- logues, interpretations, and the production of a one-act play, Mr. Carmony instructs both sections. With Mr. Barnett as teacher, the commercial geography classes study the face of America. The one-semester course includes learning about the products of soils, construction of the USA is high- lighted in this course. Maps and slides are used to help acquaint the pupils with our countryis geo- graphy. Our guidance department was established four vears ago to heln pupils plan not only for their high school days but also for their later life. Under the direction of Malcolm Clay, former English teacher, the guidance department helps us to select the best possible curriculum for our indi- vidual needs and advises us on our plans after graduation. will Throu h 0unselandCu1'dance... Their skits help get the students and the team into a fighting mood for the sectional. Usually the faculty or our rival schools are the target of the jokes, but itis all in fun and nobody minds. In fact, the teachers often laugh harder than anyone elsel This year the jokes were on the Triton Hill-Billy team, Mrs. Ramey, the Booster for Busternj Club, and the ell leaders, and as usual these people laughed the loudest. Members of Mr. Carmonyis advanced speech classes spend a good deal of their time working on a play which is presented to SHS and IHS students. Not only do the members of the class get experience in performing before a group, but they also be- come acquainted with many other aspects of the theater, such as designing costumes, learning how to apply makeup, and painting scenery. Giving the students double pleasure, the speech classes this year presented two plays, French Toast and Cracked Ice. These girls were judged hy Mrs. Ramey, Mr. Schulz, and Nlr. Chesscr on height, appearance, and rhythm. The high point of the evening, following the coronation of the Queen, was the chorus line, which has come to he an SHS tradition. From 65 appli- cants, 20 girls were selected by Nlrs. ltamey on the hasis of appearance and rhythm. The announcers for the program were chosen to represent the three departments which organized the festival. Liz, from the physical education de- partment, is CAA president, Doyle, from the hand, is its president, the person representing the choir was not chosen in time for publication. Besides escorting the girls at the festival, the seven boys whom the girls chose to walk with them were responsible for planning the dance which follows it. The Post-Prom party was held in the Elks Club as usualg it was sponsored and organized by the Shelbyville Inter-Club Council. This council is made up of representatives from all the service clubs in town. Also the junior and Senior Class officers assisted in planning the party. The junior boys elected three girls from their class to the Prom Court. On the night of May 15 Bob Adams, class president, crowned the one who received the most votes. These Seniors Earned the Hi hes! Honor Those seniors who are elected to the National Honor Society might be called the elite of their class. Membership in this organization is one of the highest honors which can come to a student, be- cause it represents the achievement of four years of scholastic work coupled with personal qualifi- cations. The top 25 per cent of the class is eligible for membership, and from this group the faculty selects 15 per cent of the class to be honored. Membership is determined by citizenship, character, and leader- ship, besides scholastic ability. New members were initiated at a banquet giv- en by the alumni members of the society on April 15. Both new members and their parents were guests of the alumni. The Reverend B. ll. The team edged a strong Connersville squad 14-13. Picking up another game, the Bear Cubs mowed down arch-rival Columbus by the lopsided score of 19-6. The team lost their only game to the Conners- ville Spartans with a score of 0-6. Closing the season, the boys whipped Franklin 18-12. The team members showed great promise using the Wing T formation, and they should pro- vide the varsity squad with some strong material next year. Leroy Dee Compton was in his third year as coach of the Golden Bears, and Vaughn Drake remained to coach reservesg lim Mallers and Eugene McNew joined SHS this year to handle the freshman and junior high games. The liens had a winning season, They brought home the Holiday Tourney Crown for the fourth consecutive time, but relinquished our hopes of winning the Sectional two years straight by losing a heart-breaker to Nashville. We were third in the South Central Conference in basketball. Arranging things for the practices, helping in- iured players, and keeping equipment in top order were the all important managers. The freshman, reserve, and varsity were served by four 1lTlHilg6I'S. Two junior high boys managed their team. New this year was a statistician who figured averages for the squads. To bolster cominunitv relations and to pre- view the team's plays, the athletic department snonsored another Basketball Clinic this year. The clinic was held just before the start of the season and the team displayed their wares', for the fans. All in all it was a successful year for the Colden Bears. Under the guidance of Arthur HDocn Barnett, the SHS baseball team was a strong contender for the SCC diamond champion- ship this year. The varsity squad was loaded with veterans with two to three years of varsity participation. The reserve squad had some very good material which should take the places of seniors who graduated this year. The team started the season off with beating Franklin Township of Marion County 9 to 3. They also whipped VVarren Central, another Marion County team, 4 to 1. Indianapolis Washington and Carthage were the next non conference games played by the squad. The team started off SCC play by playing Greensburg. SCC members, Seymour, Columbus, Franklin, Connersville, Martinsville, Southport, jeffersonville, and Hushville, followed next on the schedule. 1 1 - -,- I 'I V, 15:11, 375 1153 11 TENNIS: 1311- C111111111111. ,1111111 Un-W, Larry D111111s. The Senior Class officers have responsibilities not only to their class but also to the school. After their election last spring, the three officers met with the SQUIB sponsors and chose the editor and business manager of the yearbook. Baccalaureate and Commencement ceremonies are supervised by the senior officials. Une of the most important duties of the officers is to count votes and certifv the election for the Iunior Prom Court. Being a member of the Student Council and the top-ranking Executive Committee is an important function of the Senior president. VVilson Allen, SIlS,s top scientist, is shown with his project, an improved vidicon with an internal amplifier. VVilson Allen was named one of the QS :final- ists in the National VVestinghouse Science Talent Search last February. Thousands of budding sci- entists across the nation entered the contest before the final participants were chosen. An improved Vidicon with an internal ampli- fier was built bv Wfilson as his entrv in the comne- tition. The finalists were awarded a trio to NVashing- ton, D. C. where the final trials were held. A high point of the trin was a meeting with the President at the NVhite House. For the first time in many years, student speak- ers delivered the address at the Commencement ceremonies. Three seniors, Charles Barnett, Paul Allen DePrez, and Norma VVilliams, were ehzrsen by a joint student-faculty committee for this honor. Candidates for Commencement speaker de- livered their speeches before the committee in early February. The students were judged on many points which included content, delivery, tone quali- ty, articulation, and knowledge of material. During the first three years of high school, underclassmen train for positions of leadership and responsibility. While seniors are expected to run the showf, underclassmen can be depended upon to furnish assistants, future athletic champions, and people who just want to help. Our underclassmen will attain many New Horizonsv in the new school next year. By profiting from previous classes, mistakes, underclassmen can achieve New Horizons in scholarship, student government, organizations, and athletics. funiors Adams, Bolt Addison, ,lack Aldridge, Vfendell Alexander, llwain Amos.
