This squad demonstrated the spirit and knowledge it takes to make an undefeated season, and, with a few breaks in a couple of the games, this dream would have become a reality. But as the season ended, the Bears had to settle for two defeats and third place in the SCC behind Seymour and Columbus. The Pagemen downed a rugged and determined Connersville Spartan crew by a single point, 14-13, to start an undefeated season on the home gridiron. The next two games, played away from home, proved to be disheartening to the Bears. At Franklin the Bruins came from a 13-7 halftime deficit to score on an 80 yard runbaek of the opening kick off. The game ended, 13-13. At Columbus the Bulldogs handed the Bears their first setback, 7-0. Columbus scored late in the first quarter, but after that the Bears ontplayed them statistically. Twice the Bruins moved within the Columbus 10 yard line, once down to the one foot line. and two other times Shelbyville T.D.'s were called back by penalties. Shelbyville came home to end their rougliest week of football competition by downing a highly regarded Southport eleven in the last 15 seconds, 6-0. At Martinsville the Pagemen displayed a sparkling passing attack to come from behind in the last six seconds and tie the Artesians 13-13. The Pagemen kept their winning streak at home alive by trouncing the Lions of Rushville, 19-0. Then came the heartbreaking game at Seymour which the Bears dropped, 12-7, only after battling wind, dust, and Owls to an apparent standstill. The Bears then came home to end a great season by outfighting the Greensburg Pirates to the score of 21-7. At the end of the season, Coach John Page could say that although SHS may have been beaten a couple of times, this 1953 football squad was never ontfought. Next year should be even better for football in Shelbyville with all backfield men retum- ing, and a good many lincmen. 1954 Squib - 37 FOOTBALL RESERVES AND JUNIOR HIGH SECOND TEAM FOOTBALL RECORD H. Don Brown, Bob BIcNew, lolm Reece, Ronnie Mitchell O O lthough Coach Loren loseph did not leave a very impressive record for his first season at SHS, he did leave us with the impression of good years to come. Starting five sophomores and juniors most of the season, and carrying only two seniors on the team, he gave plenty of experience to the underclassmen who will carry the load of the basketball team next year and the year after. The complete story of SHS basketball is not shown however in its 5-15 record, for the Bears posted victories over Muncie Central and Richmond among their five wins, and played teams like Greensburg and jeff of Lafayette to complete standstills only to lose in the last few minutes of play. The Bruins did not win a SCC game, but had they been playing in the NCC, they would have more than held their own for they conquered two of the four NCC teams they faced. The boys that wore uniforms this year at SHS were young and inexperienced and had to fill the shoes of two consecutive semi-final teams from this school. WVe wish the boys the best of luck nest year. and we are sure that they can easily take their place beside the great teams of SHS before they graduate. HQNKE VIS 0 x 5 42 - 1954 squzb :CD S.
