The regularity of each class is sometimes broken by invitations from local businessmen to see their particular organization in action, such as one of our commerce classes taking in the procedure of a banking day, which included a demonstration by an employee of the bank. uAud a good time was had by all. 4 Modeling Our Study on Models Poor Oscar ll Herc hc is again, aiding the health classes in their search for a more thorough unclerstancling of thc human boclv. The H1-X sponsor ed a rinc Christmas program. as ,3i.,,,,.F x Q- 4 , Ame. ,W ,E . 1 1 l 1 l if Q3 eil Along with these scheduled programs, we enjoy varied con- vocations by professional enter- tainers such as the presentation of ulleauty and the Beastv. To the audience the Wooden char- acters were life-like as they moved and talked on the Stage. However, this picture taken during the performance may show you the intricate details that go into the make-up of a production of this type. Hi-Y lf you attend the basketball games, you probably check your hat and coat at the Hi-Y check- ing service. This is the chief rnoney making project of the Hi-Y club. After donating to de- serving charities the club uses its money for parties, dinners, and benefits for the school. Wlith the aid of their sponsor, Mr. Bass, the organization con- ducts very impressive Christmas, Thanksgiving, and Easter serv- ices for the students. Music Charms Us Frequently, our convocations are supplemented by an appearance of our Senior Robed Choir. We Like to at Note this everyday occurence when the noon bell finally rings. After a mad dash for the cafeteria is taken, one passing the line of starved students might overhear something like this: Golly, Yin starved! I thought that bell would never ringf, Miss Bodem and the Cooks certainly should receive their share of praise for the wonderful meals they prepare-who Wouldn't rush!! 8 5 li .a 5,1 if We Pay Our Dimes Goldie has a hand in just about everything going on around our school. She is aided by two of the office girls in her task of counting money taken in for one of the programs given by pro- fessional entertainers. Before the entertainment begins, there is a little time for that seemingly important conversation 10 And Enjoy Real Talent The day is over for some students, but for others it is only begin- ning. Extra-curricular ac- tivities engage us after class hours. Highlighting the yearys con- vocations was the performance of a Latvian duo from the In- dianapolis Symphony Orchestra. The formality of their excellent music was broken by their pleasant personalities. 11 Awards to the eaders The highlight of each yearls football season is the presentation of the Kiwanis Award. Meetings held at the homes of members give a more informal atmosphere. Gabbling and Giving VVant the news of latest developments in Korea, price-wage control or any current world problems? Ask a Forum memberg heill know. Of course, it isn't all work. The fall Weiner roast gave us a chance to discuss our own problems. X l I Sue Ann drew the bye for May Court, but she certainly didnit when personalities were being handed out. Freddie is our gentleman scholar around school, our efficient business manager and well, just plain wonderful. That goes double including that Freddie is with Sue. Itls no wonder that Queen jackie is the top favorite of her classmates. NVith her quiet ways and sweet personality she is bound to be popular no inatter Where she goes. Don, our big bass nian in choir, likes to sing and go dancing. VVho wouldnit, with his tall blond date? Charlotte is ti eharniing and busy girl. She is our very Capable Squib Staff editor and a talented musician. Frank, our terrific guy with a clarinet, loves niusic and dancing. We can see he is interested in the finer things in life, considering the lovely girl he is escorting. Murcia is petite, with nn economy sim- smili- nnd ii likeable personality. It Was ccrtaliuly nmdc- ovidmlt that we students are not thnx only onus who can have fun at parties. H? Teachers' ea What a my-diant smile! In the fall of each school term the Faculty Tea is held. At this affair the men serve as cater- ersv. No Wonder the ladies seem to be enjoying themselves so much. Schoul Board Upon the superintendent of schools and the school board rest the responsi- bility of steering the educational system safely in its course, avoiding the calm of excess conservatism and the Whirlpools of radicalism. Progressive education is most desirable, for education must surely lead somewhere. However, if the men at the Wheel do not keep their eyes and ears Wide open, the Winds of chance may lead the educational bark to destruction. SHS is fortunate in that able and experienced men of vision are piloting its course. Mr. Loper and our capable board of businessmen, Mr. Scofield, Mr. DePrez and Mr. Parker, are aware alike of the dangers of reverting to horse- and-buggy days and of the threats held by a Buck Roger world of illusion. Lessons of the past help them sail us confidently through the present with an eye on the future. Special Services l For the first time, Shelbyville schools this year have had the services of a speech and hearing teacher in the person of Miss Ault. Long a familiar figure at the Booker T. NVashington School, Mr. Fort has recently taken over supervision of our testing program, grading and evaluating the results of achievement and aptitude tests. Modern school systems offer many special services undreamed of by the founders of our public schools. Under the complexities of modern living, more and more problems are being brought to the schools for solution. Checking attendance and solving the problems which hamper students in maintaining regular attendance is the work of Mrs. Chambers, attendance officer. The health problems of students can frequently be solved or at least helped by our school nurse, Mrs. Strait. TB patch tests, vision check-ups, X-rays, hearing tests -these are part of the .activities which keep her so busy. The paper vvorkn of a modern school system- finan- cial reports, tax records, transfers, maintenance expenses, and the interminable tasks of reporting, typing, filing, and record keeping-falls largely on the school board clerk, Mrs. Monfort, and her assistant, Mrs. Laird. i he Office In our own building, Mr. Breck co-ordinates all activities both of our classrooms and our extra-curricular organizations. YVith such varied problems and personalities as appear in his office, he has a tremendous responsibility. Mr. Bass has the task of keeping the junior high school on an even keel, as Well as that of guiding high school freshmen through the shoals of adjust- ment to senior high in his orientation course. He also serves as dean of boys. Despite the mass of detail Work which falls on her shoulders, Mrs. Craige finds time to direct the activities of the senior high office girls, while Mr. Bass directs those assigned to junior high. Mrs. Craige has a Wealth of information at her fingertips, filed away in those capacious steel filing cabinets. Row 2: Bill Dietz, Bill Price, Tony Jester, Bob VValton. VARSITY FOOTBALL Shelby High's 1950 football team found it rough going, dropping six of seven scheduled games. The Bears did' come out on top in the Aurora game, defeating the Red Devils 33 to 13, and nearly tasted victory at Connersville and Greensburg with scores of 12 to 13 and 14 to 18 respectively. The hardest fought game of the season was with the Con- ference Champion, Seymour. The Owls Won by the score of 24 to 18. The coaching staff, led by I. M. McKeand, with assistants john Page and Ray Hinshaw, tried to put out a winning team but was foiled by injuries and tough breaks. Looking for next year to be more promising, we find lettermen und reserve men returning for action. 65' Bears in Action B TEAM U Along with the varsity were under classmen wh o made up the Bn team. They played a season of their own under the coaching of Bay Hinshaw, losing two games to Franklin and Columbus and winning two from Greensburg and Connersville. They also gained much experience in Varsity games. -66 reshman Football Shelbyis young gridders this year, under Coach John Page and Assistant Coach Herb Day, learned the fundamentals of football, practicing them two games against Connersville and Colum- bus and in scrimmage with the KBU team. Shelhy's Golden Bears this year finished the season with a nine win and eleven loss record. The Bears had a rugged Schedule, playing teams like Muncie Central, Jefferson of Lafayette, jeffersonville and Madison. Even though we lost more games than we won, they were thrilling games. Franklin heat us by one and two point margins in our two meetings, and in the last game we beat Seymour two points. Nobody will forget that sectional game with Columbus when we lost by two points in a sudden death overtime. The hoys had the spirit of a winning team even though they did not always win. HIGH BASKETBALL The Iunior High basketball squad consisted of 70 or 80 boys this year, divided into eight different league teams coached by different boys on the Varsity. From these league teams Coach Bay Hinshaw picked about 15 boys for his regular season games. Also in these season games Coach Hinshaw used the platoon system to give more boys a chance to play. The team he picked for the games had a very good season, winning five out of seven games, beating Morristown twice, Columbus twice, and Greensburg once, and losing one each to Greensburg and Rushville. '72 Paul Gross Award s 1 jim Hebbe and Mr. Crossg Coaches Barnes and Branch McCracken. Harold Raster receives captairfs star. The distinguished Paul Cross Medal was awarded to jim Hebbe by Rev. and Mrs. Cross in memory of their sou Paul Cross, who gave his life in YVorld XVar I. The medal is given on the basis of good sportsmanship, loyalty to team- mates, and scholarship. Jim fills all of these qualifications. lim came up the ladder in basketball by playing on the high, freshman, and second teams. The past two years he has been a member of the Varsity squad and was elected to the All-South Central Conference team this year. He also is very active in the S-Club, Hi-Y club, and the N.A.S.S. Shelby's baseball team this year found mostly hard work and little pleasure in building up a team for the future year. The team, made up of three seniors, eleven juniors and two sophomores, won three of their eleven games but showed great promise for the coming year. The batting crown was awarded to Bill Antle, a valuable left fielder. Bill had an average of .341 for the season. 74 The Bruin trackmen this year under the coaching of c'MacD McKeand had a good season, winning two meets from Franklin and one from Connersville and dropping one to Bushville. In a three way meet with Seymour and Bedford, Shelby placed second and third in a three way meet with Martinsville and Columbus. In the South Central Conference the Bruins rated fourth. In the Sectional they scored nine points, with Sadler ranking third in the 100 yard dash and Davis third in the 440 yard dash. Sater placed third in the broad jump and Kaster second in the pole vault. Tennis and Go t Teams TENNIS Shelby this year was represented by Norman Poe and Mark Miles in the singles and Kenneth Ewicli and lim Hehhe in the doubles. The team was coached by Mr. Clay and tied for third place in the conference with Connersville. David Kelley was also a member of the team but did not participate in the meet. Poe and Miles were defeated in their first matches by Snyder of Columbus and Sharp of Rushville. Ewick and llebbe won their first match over Howard and Owens of Greensburg, but were outscored by Newsom and Meyer of Columbus. GOLF Aincmg the high school sports the golf team receives less: glory than any other sport, but not because the team members do not deserve it. Shelby's linksmen made a very fine showing this year by placing fourth in the Conference Tourney Played here at the Elkis Country Club. Shelby's team was led by Karl Schelfer who fired .1 low of T5 to tie Ed Larrison of Columbus for LOW Medalist honors.
