FIRST ROW Kays Swindler Hickman Clements Swigert SECOND ROW West Carter Mathis Frazier Ethington Frye Wright Mr Settle Facing one of its toughest schedules in years Shelbyville opened the season with a fast experienced team but was handicapped by a lack of height Three starters were back from the precedmg season The opener was played at Owenton where the Red Devils beat Owen County 68 57 Bobby Carter led led the scoring with 18 pomts In the first home game Bagdad was the v1ct1m as S H S rolled 94 27 Herbie Kays broke the school s individual scoring record of 29 pomts in one game set by Joe Bowles in 1953 by pouring in 32 points Shelbyville next met Taylorsville defeat1ng them 68 58 Herbie Kays was high scorer with 20 points The Demons were again host toacounty school, Led by Bobby Swindler, who scored 19 points, they turned back Waddy, 69-50, Determination and a last half scoring splurge by Kays, who rang up 19 of his 25 points after inter- mission, overcame an Eastern lead to edge the Eagles, 60-58. Following this victory, the Red Devils were honored by being selected as one of sixteen teams to participate in the Louisville Invitational Tournament, held in Male High Gym December 27-30. The Red Devils' first defeat came at the hands of the Scott County Cardinals 52-49 'in an overtime, In their next encounter the Devils again lost a heartbreaker to Male 56-54 in a double overtime, Graduating players were: Co-Captains Herbie Kays and Bobby Swindler, Bobby Carter, Jess Frazier, Bobby Joe Wright, Sammy West, Shug Hickman, Bill Clements, and Lewis Mathis.
