The 1955 edtuon of the Red Devlls started practtce August 15 Scr1mmages w1th DIXIE Hetghts and Eastern gave htgh hopes for a successful season ln openmg the season the Demons showed an aggress1ve ground game defeattng on thexr home f1e1d the Georgetown Buffaloes 34 7 The Devlls then htt the road to tangle w1th an msptred Versallles team Though the ftrst few mmutes prom1sed a mp and tuck game the Demons sk11l and experzence proved dec1d1ng factors 1n a 37 0 wtn over the Yellowjackets A drenched Dan1el F1eld was the s1te of the meettng w1th a weak Wmchester team. Even the th1rd team was suff1c1ent as Shelbyvllle pumshed the Shawnees 46 0 Agatn a muddy fxeld was the battleground as Shelbyvllle played host to the Cadets from M M I Though the cahber of play was below par they overpowered the v1s1tors 38 0 At thxs pomt 1n the season fullback Sammy West was leadtng the state tn scormg and tackle B111 Clements was bemg heralded as a candtdate for All State Honors Weather condtttons rematned poor for our follow1ng encounter at Lawrenceburg Here the Red Devtls met st1ff oppos1t1on as Anderson County fought valtantlyto reta1n a perfect record But the Demons sparked by the runmng of Sammy West and the all around play of B111 Clements edged the fxghtmg Bearcats 14 13 The Devxls proved to be poor hosts to thexr bltter r1vals the Frankfort Panthers drubbmg them 30 0 tn the state s number one game of the weekend Shug H1ckman stole the scormg honors from Sammy West as he sped to paydtrt four tlrnes The ftred up Red Devxls played thetr best game of the season At the last home game Shelbyvllle entertamed the Creekers from Fern Creek and turned back the aggressors 27 7 In thts game they were wtthout the d1rect1on of Coach Greenwell who had been hosp1tal1zed that week w1th a v1rus In the last all 1mportant, conference game Shelbyvtlle lnvaded enemy terr1tory encountermg Danvtlle s Admtrals ranked number eleven m the state on the Centre College fteld ln th1s game whxch would dec1de the CKC t1tle the DCVIIS entered the game shghtly favored Although tn every department they outplayed the Danvxlle Club by a good margm on th1s cold wmdy ramy mght tt took a blocked punt 1n the last rmnute to gam a 12 12 t1e Although xt was thought that the Dev1ls had captured the champtonshxp a further check proved Harrodsburg was the conference champxon because of the present system of scormg The fmal game of the season, played at Bardstown, completed the best season l1'1 the h1story of S H S Though they were favored to wm by a larger margm and though they led only 6 0 at half ume, the Demons were able to let the second and th1rd stringers play as they managed a 19 6 vtctory Graduattng players are co captams B111 Clements and Lewls Mathts Herbxe Kays Sammy West Shug Htckman Jess Frazler Bobby Carter Bobby Joe Wrlgtll Paul Eaktns and John Damel.
