' .' in 22 so 232: As we are nearing the completion of our senior year, we find ourselves striving even harder to make it one filled with pleasant memories which we know will be outstanding in our lives. We know this year's success has been due greatly to the excellent leadership of our officers, the wise counsel of our sponsors and Mr. Jett, and the co-operation of the class in general. From the beginning the class knew what its goals were for the year and the work involved in at- taining them. The officers who were elected last spring, assumed their duties in August, with Jim Martin as president. The other officers were Joe Williams, vice president, Carolyn Clanton, secretary, and Judy Parker, treasurer. Our class established the point system thus creating a wonderful coopera- tion among its members. Immediately, we began our money-making projects. On Friday and Saturday nights of the National Walking Horse Celebration we had a booth for baked goods. Members of the class donated the food and also volunteered to help sell it. Soon afterwards the elections were held for PTSA Representatives and Student Council members. The class chose Ardis Hunter, Sarah Lee Russell, Donny Williams, and Jim Stone to represent them in the PTSA meetings. Student Council members were Martha Cooper, Betty Jo Neese, Don Harrison, and Jim Stone. One of the big events each year is the Harvest Festival, at which a Harvest King and Queen are crowned. Our candidates were David Parks, and Sue Clift. David reigned over the festival with his queen, the freshman candidate, Connie Gowen. ln the annual magazine sales campaign, Gary Patton was high-salesman. Although the iuniors sold a few more subscriptions than we, the class response was excellent. At each of the home football games we Seniors sold popcorn, which added greatly to our treasury. The Homecoming Queen was Janis Orr, who is a senior and captain of the cheerleaders. The senior attendant was Martha Cooper. During the afternoon preceding the game, a parade was held, in which we entered a float. , The senior movies were always eagerly anticipated by all students. We have had some good movies this year, including Kim, The Court-Martial of Billy Mitchell, and Student Prince. Our play, Mister Co-Ed, had perhaps the largest attendance of any presented in previous years. The cast and sponsors did an excellent iob. Probably the most delightful thing that can happen to a senior is to be elected a superlative or a member of the National Honor Society. As always, the seniors look forward to the prom, for this one is given for us! Also the superlatives were introduced and the king and queen were crowned. Throughout the year the encouragement and advice of our sponsors, Mr. Bracey, Mrs. Eakin, Mrs. Martin, Mrs. Simmons, Mr. Wallheiser, and Mr. Hull, have been invaluable. We are deeply grateful to them for everything. On April 29th we were Washington-bound! This event we had looked forward to and worked for since our freshman year. We left on Tuesday afternoon, and returned on Saturday, May 2nd. Following our return from Washington, everyone began cramming for the final exams. The initial Commencement exercise was Sunday night, May l7th. The Rev. Herschel Patton delivered the Baccalaureate sermon. Tuesday night, May 19th, found us marching down the aisle and receiving our diplomas, thus concluding our high school years. We would not have this year remain, neither would we have its memories drift far away. To have a successful year we knew that we must have a good leader and Larry Locke was elected president. Those to assist him were Jerry Looney, vice president, Faye Parsons, secretary, and Emily Sanders, treasurer. August found us back in school and, as September rolled around, our class was already being represented in the various organizations and activities of the school. Candidates for the Harvest Festival honors were Grady Edwards, king, Marie Sharp, queen, Bobby Prince, prince, and Cheryl Copeland, princess. Diana Gowen was the lovely junior attendant to the football queen. Cookie Overcast was one of the two finalists for Miss C. H. S. Marie Young was the other junior representative. Mary Lou Finney and Bill Anderson were elected to represent our class in the PTSA and the Student Council couldn't have done without its junior members, who were Freeda Fly, Faye Parsons, Jerry Looney, and Kenneth Couser. Bill Sanders, the vice president of the Council, was also a jolly junior. Larry Locke served as assistant editor for the AQUILA and Freeda Fly as assistant business manager. Selling homemade candy and cold drinks at the football games was the first money- making project launched by the junior class. The magazine sale was very successful with the total amounting to 52401.49 Gray Hill was the high salesman with Pat Tarpley and Me- linda Morgan placing second and third respectively. Our concessions at the Harvest Festival featured throwing darts and shooting basket- balls. These were very popular attractions, but no one except the bravest souls would dare go through the House of Horrors, which was also sponsored by the juniors. The climax of our year of hard work and fun together was the Junior-Senior Prom, which took place on April 17. Plenty of hard work and planning went into the prom, based on the theme With a Song in my Heart, in order to make it a wonderful occasion. Although the juniors have had a very successful year, none of the achievements would have been possible without the advice, hard work, and encouragement of our sponsors, Mr. Copeland, Mrs. Crockett, Mrs. Gore, Mrs. Hulan, Mr. Leech, and Miss Rogers. lt is due to their interest in us that we finished this year with the feeling that it has been the high- light of our high school endeavors. Out president, Jerry Smith, and his officers, Charles Milton, vice president, Peggy Jo Hill, secretary, and Norma Zae Segroves, treasurer, took the leadership of the 1958-59 sophomore class. The Student Council Representatives elected were Gaylon Rogers, Jerry Smith, Norma Zae Segroves, and Betty Phillips. Charles Milton and Betty Phillips were the delegates to the PTSA. The sponsors who have helped us in our many activities, such as Harvest Festival, homecoming float, and sophomore party are Mrs. Barnes, Mrs. Breast, Mrs. Cathey, Mr. Davis, Mrs. Hoover, Miss Kingree, Mrs. Langford, and Miss Thomas. Representing the sophomore class as Harvest Festival candidates were Carol Walls, queen, Frank Bobo, king, Punky Brantley, princess, and Harold Segroves, prince. We sponsored several contests at the Harvest Festival, one of which was the Hula-hoop contest. ,B Q s s l s s R . s Q The theme for the sophomore float in the homecoming parade was Eagles' 'Spirit Gonna Rise To- night. Wilma .lean Bragg was selected to represent her classmates as attendant to the Homecoming queen. We have really had a most enioyable and memorable year and we look forward to being iolly iun- iors next fall. . . -'.llb yy.. t ., .x 'J x Q C QI' Left to right: Saunders, Wheeler, Shelton, Lewis, Segroves President ,,,,,, E ,,,,,, JERRY WHEELER Vice President ,,,, SHARON SHELTON Secretary EEEE ,,77, DAVID SEGROVES Treasurer , ,,,,,,,,,, BETTY LEWIS Reporter ,,,, ,7A,,,, B ETTE SAUNDERS Lucy Lynn Adams Nettie Fay Adams Sibil Adams Woodedean Adcock Karen Alcorn Stanley Alexander Nancy Alford Gordon Anderson Albert Arnold Sarah Austin Connie Ayers David Baker Lucille Barber Carol Barnes Betty Batten Barbara Bearden Betty Beasley Donna Bledsoe Wayne Bomar Clayton Brown Jane Brown Melvin Brown Kenneth Bryant Napoleon Bryan Jerry Harris Larry Hasfy Mary Frances Hasty Jeanette Hayes Kenny Hayes Ann Henslee Margaret Herrin Lois Ann Hise Danny Hix Chuck Holden Jerry Holt Carol Lee Hoover Paul Howard Kenneth Housch Wayne Hudson Peggy Jensen Alvin Jones Ann Jones Charles Jones Faye Jones Billy Kesner Angela Kincaid Barbara King Charles Kolmslock Larry Rees Terry Reeves Mike Rice Carol Riner Jimmy Riner Peggy Riner Doris Rutledge Ann Sanders Wayne Sanders Bette Saunders James Sartain Tommy Sawdey David Segroves Chrysta Lee Sharp Jack Shearon Jerry Shelton Sharon Shelton Terry Shofner Albin Simmons Frances Sloop Newton Smelcer Brenda Smith Carolyn Smith Debra Smith 37 152' .. ,t 1.-v 1 0.5 emu SPONSORS 1 . , . 1 O oi 4 -A QS .., . We had taken the big step, we were in high school. After the greenness had worn off, the freshman class began to take part in the school activities. First we had the election of class officers. Jerry Wheeler was chosen as president of the class, Sharon Shelton, vice president, David Segroves, secretary, Betty Lewis, treasurer, and Bettye Saunders, reporter. The freshman representatives to the PTSA are Sandra Locke and Jerry Wheeler. Student Council representatives are Connie Gowen, Carey Gates Thomas, Jerry Wheeler, and Scottie McDonald. Acting as very capable sponsors were Mrs. Harrison, Mrs. Bomar, Mrs. Mummert, Mrs. Morton, Mr. Rogers, M. McDaniel, and Mr. Adkins. The first big proiect undertaken by the freshmen was the Harvest Festival. The income of the various games and contests we sponsored totaled 555.110, Not only were our freshmen successful in the money-making projects, but we were successful with our candidates for Harvest Festival-rulers. Connie Gowen and Robert Calahan reigned as queen and prince, respectively. Other freshman candidates were Wayne Bomar, king, and Susan Tilford, princess. The freshman class marched in the homecoming parade, carrying signs and cheering under the direction of the freshman cheerleaders. Also representing the freshmen in the Homecoming Festivities was Carey Gates Thomas, who was an at- tendant to the queen. The freshman class of 1958-59 has experienced a most successful and enioyable first year of high school and is certainly looking forward to their future years. sf 5 r ALMA MATER On The clfys western border Reared agaunst The sky Proudly stands our Alma Mater As The years roll by Forward ever be our vvatchword Conquer and prevail Haul To Thee our Alma Mater' C H S All Haul' R Y. f? r ' if 1 ' 'hw K ui A Q3 . Homecoming day, which, incidentally, was Halloween, was filled with excitement . . . adding the finishing touches to the floats, the pep rally on the square, and the parade. Janis Orr, captain of the cheerleaders, reigned over the festivities. The members of her court were Martha Cooper, senior, Diana Gowen, iunior, Wilma Jean Bragg, sophomore, and Carey Gates Thomas, freshman. Immediately following the parade, a deluge of rain fell . . . causing the garne to be postponed until Saturday night. Janis was crowned by Captain Gail Luna during the half of the McMinnville City game, the outcome of which was a I3-I3 tie. WINNING FLOAT The winning float was entered by the Senior Y-Teens.
