CLASS My Romany chlldren how well I recall Sep tember 194.4 when you came to the Freshman There were forty elght whlch was a la1ger number than you now have Thls was a new lxfe to you and you had to adyust your selves to the customs languages and hab1ts of the gypsy trlbe Camp It has always been an old gypsy custom IH every camp that the new classmen must l1ght the camp flre and keep lt burnmg durlng thelr stay here It was hard for you to understand that the f1re had to be klndled by sparks of enthuslasm and kept burnlng by the llght of knowledge Your flrst duty was to search for fuel In your rambllngs you found some good logs of hald wolk Each day a broth had to be brewed ln the Gypsy pot How curlous you were over th1s at flrst When you learned that the mlxture was knowledge gleaned only by sealch and study you1 amazement began to subslde The 1ng1ed1ents whlch you prepared each day for your mental food were fresh dates from the t1ee of Hlstory leaves of CIVICS rules of G1amma1 and problems of Algebra Before long vou had learned to chew dlg9St and as slmllate th1s food You chose John Plummer NOITIS Hallack Elleen Sanford and Elma Buchel as youl leaders Youl old Madre or Alma Mater had an lnterest ln vou far beyond vou1 mental develop ment In Oldel to g1ve you the best tra1n1ng a group of gvpsv leaders wele selected to develop your varxous talents Thev were called the faculty Then names were Mr McCloy Mr Anderson Mlss Carr and Mlss DeSm1t You1 teachels reallzed that some of vou were very muslcal so they selected those of you who were outstandlng 1n muslc and placed you under the leadelshlp of MISS Elkert who devoted her t1me to tra1n1ng your NOICQS and teachmg you to play va11ous 1nst1uments HISTORY In add1t1on to your muslcal tra1n1ng lt was noted that you had much g1ace and rhythm Soon classes ln physlcal educatlon were started to wh1ch you lesponded most favorably My mvnd reverts to those days when you flrst became 1nte1ested 1n muslc and danclng The sp11ng of the year found you ready to break camp and go 1nto another sect1on of the school land You successfully passed through the perlod of adjustment ln the Freshman land and you en tered the Sophomore Camp w1th unllmlted power and confldence whlch caused you to clalm your places at once ln the camp glound You lost some of your tr1be You 1eal1zed qulte early that your mterest must be protected so you elected Betty Webber as presldent of your class w1th Lyle Cheevel Don Johnson and Marxlyn Flemmg as co wolkers The most outstandmg occaslon of revelry durlng the year was the School Ca1n1val the results of whlch greatly fllled your depleted treasury Th1s yea1 was so fllled w1th act1v1t1es mental physlcal and soclal that before you reallzed 1t the tlme had come to move on In accordance w1th the gypsy custom you soon had to break camp and go 1nto another sect1on In September 1944 you had entered the J unlor sect1on of the school land Your leadens were Don Johnson Mllan Meyers W1lma Best and Velda Bearss By th1s tlme you were begln nxng to reap the frults of your prevlous years labor A greater and more genlal comradesh1p had developed among you and you were at peace w1th the tube You devoted most of your tlme to study but you d1d not neglect your physxcal development Great rlvalry between class basketball teams had arlsen and you were 1n good condxtlon to accept the challenge to play ln the class tournament fuaals whlch you lost to the Senlors by a nauow margm .
