This year's choir was made up-of 84 sophomores, juniors and seniors. Performances included spe- cial programs, assemblies, and con- tests. The choir did very well and earned straight 1's at last year's dis- trict contest and was hopeful for the same rating this year. There are three other vocal music groups, the Mel-0-ettes, consisting of eight girlsg the Esquires, consist- ing of 25 boys, and the Choralettes, consisting of 30 girls. All of these groups perform in special programs, assemblies and contests. Success of the Concert Choir would not be possible without the direction of Mr. Turley who has made it one of the best in the area. 4 Dramatics Club In'November of 1966 the Dramat- ics Club presented three one-act plays, The Devil and Daniel Webster, The Lottery, and The Still Alarm. On both nights there was a large turnout. The second play of the year, The Remarkable Incident at Carson Cor- ners, was presented in March. Stu- dent directors were Mary Beth Schu- macher and Steve VanDervort. Mr. Young, the club's advisor, di- rected the three plays and was assisted by Candy Boyce as student director. A trip to Perkins Observatory at Ohio Wesleyan Un- iversity was scheduled May 11. Other activities included the showing of movies, discussing var- ious aspects of astronomy, and hear- ing guest speakers. Among the speakers was Mr. Laughbaum whose hobby is astronomy. The club's annual dance was held March 31. Proceeds from the dance were to be used for a turret to install the club's own eight-inch telescope. Bi-Phy-Chem Club In 1955 Miss Snyder organized the Biology Club. As physics and chemistry students became inter- ested in the club, the name of the or- ganization was changed to the Bi- Phy-Chem Club to include these old- er students. New members are required to ex- hibit a science project at the local science fair. A student who receives a superior rating may advance to the district science fair at Ashland, and a district sup-erior is eligible for state competition in Columbus. The club's yearly activities in- clude speakers, movies, field trips, debates, and an annual dance. These activities are highlighted by a visiting scientist from the Ohio Academy of Science. Conducting this year's meetings was Scott Shadrick, the club's elected president. Steve VanDer- vort, vice-president, also served as program chairman. Secretary- treasurer Pat Miller kept financial records and handled all club cor- respondence. Jim Purdy, the club news reporter, reported the meet- ings to the local newspaper and managed club publicity. Miss Sny- der was the club's advisor. F. F.A. Forty-nine boys made up this year's F. F. A. Throughout the year these boys took part in a variety of activities. Sonic of these activities included the parliamentary procedure contest, the F.F.A. camp, the Ohio State F.F.A. convention: the district and state gen- eral livestock, wool, crops, meat, milk, and land judging contestsg and the pub- lic speaking contest. The boys spend many hours plow- ing, disking, planting, fertilizing, and harvesting the crops on the F.F.A. farm. The farm is located on 55 acres of what was formerly Shelby Air Force Depot ground. if 5f':e'9iQf9f9t ??- FRONT ROW fleft to rightj : Dave Arnold, Mike Bertke, Bruce Bistline, Mark Fry, Dave Alexander, Greg Cole, Mike Oeseh, Fred Cooke, and Orva Dawson. Originat- ing in one of Miss Bowman's world history classes, the idea for the paper emerged from a discussion revolving around what could be done to make Shelby High a better school. Starting in April of 1954, the paper was mimeographed for three issues, and 'as time went on the publication improved by leaps and bounds. Along with the usual polls, edito- rials, senior profiles, and club news, some new features such as London Line, Paddock Place and Dear Harvey were added. Doug Hamilton, the pride of the junior class, ended up in eight place in N.O.L. scoring with a 13.7 average. Shelby won four games this sea- son and lost 14. Coach Williams was very pleased with the way some of the players have come around. Tom Scott, the starting center, had never played more than five minutes in a game before this season. His best game was against Upper Sandusky in the tournament. There were others-Don Pifer, Dan Cordes, Howie Knapp. All were very inexperienced at the beginning of the year. After getting off to a slow start, the Whippets picked up near the end of the season and won three of their last four games. After falling to Willard in tournament play, Shel- by took two contests from the Flash- es in its end-of-the-season rally. Phil Williams led the Whiptpets at the plate by batting .357. Jim Reed, who was voted the most improved player on the team, was second in hitting with .270. Rich Fellow, who led in stolen bases, was named most valuable player, and Bob Felter was named the most effective pitcher. 1966 RESERVE SEASON RECORD Shelby Opponent 1... ....... Madison ...... Mr. Yohn Retires As Golf Coach Mr. Yohn, after having coached Whippet teams in over 300 matches, last spring announced his retirement as Shelby High's golf coach. He was succeeded by Mr. Terman. Five of Mr. Yohn's teams reigned as Northern Ohio League champs, and two of his teams earned their way to state tournaments. His years as golf coach, however, are but a part of his contribution to Shelby High athletics. Mr. Yohn pre- viously had coached reserve basketball and reserve football. He has been of- ficial scorer for over 600 varsity and reserve basketball games, and has been a part of some 400 football games as coach, timer and equipment manager. By a conservative count he has, in one way or another, contributed his service to over 1300 athletic contests - a contribution that will be difficult for any other individual to equal. Golfers N arrowly Miss N.O.L. Crown The varsity golf squad finished a close second behind Galion in the '66 Northern Ohio League race and placed third in the Northwest District tournament as the Whippets won 17 matches, lost four, and tied one. Bob Miller earned a berth on the first all-league team, and Rod Stober was named to the second team. Miller averaged 41.07 per N. O. L. match to rank third among league players, and Stober averaged 42.21 to rank eighth. Stan Ingram ranked llth in the N. O. L. with a league play average of 42.47, and Jim Messenger was 13th with a 43.36 average. 'ff -ml-1 ,N 4 W limi!! , . Varsity Season Record Shelby Opponent 615 ...... Girls ' Athletic Association G.A.A. started off the school year with election of officers and class representatives. They, along with advisors Mrs. Ross and Miss Rhodes, constituted the executive commit- tee. Its main purpose was to meet and decide important issues of the club. Volleyball and basketball intra- mural teams were selected and round-robin tournaments were held within the classes. Then the winner of each class played the winner of the other classes with the seniors emerging as winners of the volley- ball intramural trophy. The basket- ball championship team was de- cided the same way. In addition to these two sports a couple of nights of fun games were held with refreshments being served. Several general business meetings were held throughout the year. 62 SENIORS-FRONT ROW Cleft to rightlz Yolanda Saenz, Linda Weaver, Nancy Ak- ers, Cindy Hall, Beverly Amert, Maryanne Zehner, Shirley Reynolds, Gayle Garver, and Carol Alt. The volleyball all-star teams had a fair season this year, although it was a letdown over previous years. The varsity, previously undefeated for three years, finished with a 3-4 record. The reserves, previously un- defeated for two years, had a 4-3 record at the end of the season. All-star basketball got off to a poor start with both teams losing, but the teams looked forward to the remaining games with the hope of having a successful season. .. ve- VARSITY BASKETBALL-Front row Cleft to rightjz Paula Davis, Cindy Burky, Sharon Viars, and Virginia Arcudi.
