' Shelby Senior High School is 21 building of simple geometric structure. The long flowing lines and attractive non-cluttered look add a polished charm to an already beautiful building. The quiet of the library to the bustle of the home economics room blend to make a pleasant atmosphere. FHS. NS., D- ug ' li Construct Our School The spacious halls and wide stairways ease the old problem of con- gestion. Although the combination lockers were confusing at first, every- one has seemingly mastered the opening of lockers. Upper left to right: Library, woodshop, journalism laboratory, and metal shop. Standing: Mary Kleman, Sara Kennedy, Nancy Cox, and Karen Lafferty, Buckeye Girls' State During her eight-day stay at Capital Univer- sity, Nancy Hoak was elected auditor of Hobart City. As watchdog of her city's treasury, Nancy worked constantly to keep Hobart in the black. Nancy Cox of Taft City and Sara Kennedy of 'ABurwell City were both elected to the Sen- ate. After many heated sessions and filibusters, Nancy and Sara helped to pass legislation abol- ishing capital punishment, establishing voca- tional schools, and even hiring a handsome male lifeguard for a water fountain. As a member of the state board of education, Mary Margaret Kleman administered standard- ized tests to l,256 Girls Staters and learned much about the Ohio educational system. Karen Lafferty spent her busy week executing her duties as a commissioner of jones County, establishing a home for the aged and voting county appropriations. Serving on the Coit City Board of Educa- tion, Terry Whitacre helped establish a budget and hire the teachers in her city's schools. The active week was highlighted by a bus tour of Columbus, speeches by many noted polit- ical figures, and a talent show. All six Staters were successful in their cam- paigning and were elected to their offices. The girls all agreed that the 1965 session of Buckeye Girls' State was a valuable lesson in both social and governmental problems. The program was held from june 9-18 at Ohio University in Athens. These boys were chosen on the basis of scholarship, honesty, leadership, and an active interest in government. Todd ran for the office of senator and was elected. Dave Boor was elected to the House of Representatives. Carl Medley ran for the Court of Appeals, but was defeated. He ac- cepted a post on the State Board of Mental Hy- giene. Dave Pfahler was elected as city auditor. Our four representatives were among the 1,331 who attended this year. Upon returning the boys spoke to their respective sponsoring groups. The experience they received was extremely rewarding, and each boy has many memories that he will never forget. Experts in government, law, history, econom- ics, human relations, politics, and in other fields addressed the group. Roger Staubach, all-Ameri- can from the Naval Academy and former par- ticipant in Operation Youth, also addressed the group. Included in the week-long activities were intra- mural athletics, trips to various industries, busi- nesses, newspapers, and hospitals, and a meeting of the Cincinnati City Council. The three Shelby High School delegates were members of the Liberator Party which swept all but one out of the offices in the O. Y. elections. Over 100 boys from five states attended the session. The Future Farmers of America, organized at Shelby High School in 1951 for boys interested in a career in agriculture, is one of the busiest clubs at the high school. During the year the members have an opportunity to participate in varied activities such as the parliamentary procedure contest, the F.F.A. camp, the Ohio State F.F.A. Convention, the district and state judging contests, projects on the scl1oo1's 55-acre farm, and many other activities. In addition to regular class hours, much time is spent by the boys after school and on Saturdays working their land. 1.11 4 si , y. , X Ei, A i , I if xfg N 1 1 'I 1 EK Ag E1 .4 1 ga 7 3 A f is Vw Q iq, 22 43 I- ,fu .5,, fa: .S Al 11 5 2 iff'-J ' ,ffzzasm -ls, Z Z . Q Silva. The Concert Choir is the main choral per- formance group at the school. This year's mem- bership was comprised of seventy-five sopho- mores, juniors and seniors. The group, recently re-organized, is fast becoming one of the finer choral groups in the area. Entrance is by audi- tion with the director. The purpose of the organization is to acquaint the student, through performance, with various types of musical ex- periences he might not otherwise have. Choral excellence is its goal. Performances included special programs, assemblies, and contests. This year they also performed for the NOL District Rotary meeting in April. The Mel-o-ettes is a group limited to nine girls who meet on their own twice a week. This year, besides going to contests, they sang at various club meetings and special programs. Twenty-four boys comprise the newly-formed male singing group. They rehearse two and three times a week on their own time. Those silent figures walking the halls at 7 a.m. are nothing to get excited about, just boys on their way to Esquires' rehearsal. Their music varies from heavy to light. They, too, performed for special programs, assemblies, and contests. The Girls' Ensemble meets during class period and is open to any high school co-ed. 10 ,H,,fgSQfL 'A ' , lilly?-,' . From that game through the entire football sea- son the band appeared at every game and pre- sented an interesting half-time program to the delight and joy of all the fans. Immediately following the close of the foot- ball season, the members started to prepare for the annual spring concert and the various dis- trict and state contests. Last year 119653 the Shelby band received superior awards at the district and state contests. The annual spring concert is always a highlight of the musical season, and Shelby music lovers crowd the Little Theater on two evenings to hear the excellent music as presented by the Shelby Whippet Red Band. Mr. Dwight Somerville and Mr. J. Richard Rowe had charge of the senior band throughout the school season. 'I03 Z.: f ...Ak .,,-, ' 3, W, as 5. 1 W1 Q A , t !'5 . Y nv .f . ..- 14.1 r' J, I .J Q. Leading the senior marching band is a thrill for any person. One drum major and five senior ma- jorettes are in charge of the half time shows at every home and away football game during the season. Also, four junior majorettes lead the pre- game ceremonies. These talented twirlers not only have to practice long hours with the entire band, but they spend many hours rehearsing together to get their duties as leaders of the band down to perfection. All Shelby fans agree that their smooth performance as drum major and majorettes make a colorful spectacle of which all Shelbians can be justly proud. The Majorettes and drum major not only lead the band during the football season, but after the marching period take their places in the band and play instruments. These instruments vary from flute, clarinet, and French horn to bassoon and oboe. Girls ' Athletic Association GAA has become one of the fastest growing organizations in high school, increasing its mem- bership from 37 in 1955 to 126 paid members in the 1965-66 school year. Mrs. Ross, who devel- oped a new enthusiasm in the club, took over GAA in the 1962-63 school term, bringing with her an entirely new program. Among the sports in which the girls partici- pate are volleyball, basketball, bowling, track and field, and softball. An added attraction this year was the awarding of trophies to the class which won in the intramural program. The trophies, given in basketball and volleyball, will be passed on year after year. These awards give the girls a goal to strive for and make their efforts seem worthwhile. Since l962 Mrs. Ross has had all-star basket- ball and volleyball teams which compete inter- scholastically with the surrounding schools. Girls participating on both the teams hold an extraordinary record. Over a three-year period varsity volleyball has had 19 wins and no losses, and the reserves have won 14 and lost five. Equally outstanding are the basketball rec- ords. The reserves have won 21 and have lost only one, the defeat being by a one-point margin to Colonel Crawford in 1962-63. Winning 20 and losing 3, the varsity's highest scoring game was 96 points while holding their opponents to 20 points. Even more impressive are statistics which show that in 26 games the varsity scored 835 points to the opponents' 465, and the re- serves in 24 games scored 631 points while allow- ing only 215 points to their challengers. 135 SENIOR CLASS MEMBERS-Front Row Qleft to righty: Carol Bevier, Debbie Johnston, Penny Heitzman, Cindy Horner, Karen Lafferty, Veronica Biglin, Gina Milliron, and Kathy Ryland. Girls ' Athletic Association Added last year to the list of activities were the all-star bowling and track teams. Only three schools-Shelby, Plymouth and Wynford-par- ticipated in track last year, with Shelby scoring over half the total number of points. Also, six surrounding schools competed in bowling, but no records were kept. Special recognition and awards-letters Qfirst yearj, pins Qsecond yearj and guards Qthird yearj-are presented to girls earning the re- quired number of points. Points can be earned by participating in sports, refereeing, scoring, etc. 136 The goals of each GAA member are to ach1eve confidence, leadership, sportsmanship, group participation, and individuality. Each girl as well as trying to develop her athletic abilities also strives to develop her personality and char- acter. Under the leadership of its advisors, GAA does much for the recreational and eduactional welfare of its members. Assisting Mrs. Ross this year was Miss Rhodes, girls' physical education intructor at the junior high school. Miss Rhodes took charge of the in- tramural program. Her advice to the officers of the club and her suggestions for the program were a great benefit to all.
