Moy 1961 EACH YEAR the new annual staff and new senior class have a unique and definite task-to plan the details and features of the class's yearbook. The plan of this year's book actually began to take shape last spring at the presentation of the 1960 SCARLET S. Mr. Byron H. Carmean, our superin- tendent of schools, gave the staff the idea of using the Biography of a Yearbook for the theme of this year's book when he mentioned the complications and problems of developing an annual. The staff built upon that idea and is presenting the Biogra- phy of a Yearbook in this, the 1961 edition of the SCARLET Each staff strives to make the new book complete, unique, and attractive to all readers. In this volume pictures and writings show the other groups who help the staff in publishing this book. On the next few pages are pictures of the employees in the cover, engraving, and printing companies together with photos of the photographers at work. These are followed by pictures of the people who make up this school-the faculty members, the students, the organizations, and the athletic teams. In future years each staff member will recall the task and pleasures that he faced in preparing this volume of the SCARLET S. A partial view of the Composing Room at The Gray Printing Co., Fostoria, Ohio DEDICATION The 1961 Senior Class and SCARLET S staff have chosen to dedicate this edition of the yearbook to, not one, but two deserving members of our faculty. These two teachers have had a great part in making the memories that each senior cmd underclassman will have of his high school days in years to come. It is with great pride and pleasure that we dedicate this, the 1961 SCABLET S, to you-Miss Bay Bowman and Mr. Bill Wilkins. Each fall as the Whippet football team wins another championship, Mr. Wilkins loses a few more hairs. During the 13 years that Mr. Wilkins has served as head football coach, the Whippet gridders have won seven Northern Ohio League championships, more than any other team. Besides his coaching duties, Mr. Wilkins teaches freshmen civics and physical educa- tion. This summer Mr. Wilkins will have the distinction of serving as an assistant coach of the North squad in the annual North-South football game. Miss RAY BOWMAN Although she shares her energy and en- thusiasm with the students and teachers of Shelby High, Miss Bowman always seems to have plenty to spare. After spending a full day instructing World history, Miss Bowman devotes her evenings to helping the cheerleaders and working with the Whippettes, an organization which she organized in 1956. She has also advised the staff of the Whippet Tales since 1954 when the paper was organized in her world history class. 1 6 MR. BILL WILKINS vii?
