Biology Club During the school year of 1959-1960 the Shelby Biology Club has grown in size and in scope. The purpose of the club is to give its members a chance to learn and experiment on their own while still in high school. Shelby now presents an annual science fair in which all members are required to display an individual project. If this is judged superior, it is advanced to the district fairg if it is again judged a superior project, it is taken to the state contest for final judging. For the last two years, Shelby High School has been well represented at Lhese contests. This year projects ranged from blood typing, his- tology, and bacteriology to the study of heredity and cancer. Mark Lowxniller, john Rocher, Toni Baker. Buckeye Boys' State Carl Koontz, john Kocher, Tom Baker, and Mark Lowmiller were chosen by the faculty to attend the i959 session of Buckeye Boys' State. Boys' State is sponsored each year by the Amer- ican Legion and was held at Ohio University at Athens, june 9-20. Each boy attending was voted or appointed a position: Mark Lowmiller was assistant presi- dent of Cobb city council, Tom Baker was the treasurer of Garner city, Carl Koontz was the engineer of lilden Cfillllly, and john Kocher was the mayor of Campbell rity. This year 1058 boys learned government pro- cedure by actnally filling and performing var- ious phases of state, county, and rity organiza- tions. During the ten day session representatives from the Army, Navy, and Air Forte aratleinies gave speeches. showed movies and answered questions at the nightly assemblies. Men from the F.B.l. and the highway patrol gave demon- strations of their jobs. john Noble, who spoke on his experiences in Russian concentration Camps, was given a standing ovation. Dt'. Thom- as Dooley sent a movie and a tape recortling from Laos for :mother outstanding program. The boys agree that they learned a great deal about government and that they will always re- member Llte friends that they made during their ten day stay. Buckeye Girls' State These two girls were Shelby Highs repre- entativcs at Buckeye Girls' State. They are shown here reviewing a part of the endless stark of literature they received at Capital University, but their real memories are of the days they spent there and the outstanding girls they met there. During their stay, Nancy and Anne were im- pressed by the high degree ol' organization whirh prevailed all through the campaign period, the elections, inauguration banquet, and the gov- ernmental functions. The nine hundred Girls' Staters were either in :i meeting learning about parliamentary procedure or out hitting the campaign trail for the Nationalists or Federalists, Nancy was elected Federalist Mayor of Bieker- dyke and Nationalist Anne was appointed Sur- veyor antl Civil Defense Commissioner of Sher- man. The inexper- ienced lads had a slow start, winning only two of their first ten games, but they improved through- out the season and finished strongly by defeat- ing four Ollt of their last six opponents. The addition of Plymouth and Ontario to their schedule gave the freshman team the busiest season they have ever had. The experience gain- ed by the Vllhippet pups on the freshman squad should make them tnore valuable material for re- servc and varsity basketball teams in the future. TRACK SQUAD With the arrival of the first hint of spring. the Shelby High School thin-clads could be seen running around the oval, conditioning them- selves for the 1959 track season. Their desire to iinprove compensated for their inexperience. Under the guidance ol' Head Coach Roger Cope- land and Assistant Coaches Mlilliaui Varble and Ronald Strine, the Xllhippets did well in dual meet competition, winning 6 of 9 meets, but did not do so well in the relays. At the Upper Sandusky Relays, Shelby led the field going into the last event, but due to a dis- qualiliralion they lost the meet by one point. Although Shelby High lost the lVooster Relays at Xlloosler to a strong host team, the night was not a complete loss in that the Yllhippets kept the fine tradition by paying tribute to the track queen for 1959, Miss Susan King, a l959 graduate. The Yilhippet Thinclads, losing only three leltermen to last yeur's graduating class, show great promise to bonnrc back to Northern Ohio League honors in IDGO. They had an even distribution of talent with which they gained their five wins. These boys worked hard and finished up the season with an ll-0 victory over Madison. This reserve team develops the boys in the playing techniques which they will use in future years on the varsity team. t Although the '59 golf season was unimpressive in the win loss column Q5 wins, 1 tie, 11 lossesj it can hardly be called unsuccess- ful. Most of the losses were close matches: Shelby scor- ed a total of 106 points to their opponents' 166. This year brought much experi- enre to the freshmen and sophomores on the team who should contribute brighter days to the future golf seasons. 1959 Golf STANDING, left to right: Rick Hcitzman, Warner Freeze, Mr. Yohn Tom Parson jim Korbas. Two things make his high school sports career a memorable one-hard luck and determination. In his Freshman year john played reserve football and basket- ball, and varsity track. As a Sophomore he moved up to the varsity football team. Then, in the Ashland football game during his junior year, john made a drive for a loose ball which cost him a broken arm that kept hint out of loot- ball and basketball for the rest ol that year. VVhen doctors ruled him out of the quarterback spot his Senior year, john concentrated on basketball and won a forward spot on the starting team which he held down very capably all season. johns determination and ,desire to win have earned for him the admiration of the coaches, his teammates, and the student body.
