For eight busy days over one thousand girls from every part of Ohio became friends and poli- ticians as we performed our various positions in the mock government. YVith some of the best and most capable leaders and advisors in Ohio, we learned not only government funclionings but also important responsibilities as future wo- men of America. Vlle were drawn closer to our government, our neighbor, and our God. lt's a week each girl should be able to live because she would always remember it. Last summer four Shelby High School boys at- tended Buckeye Boy's State at Camp Perry. The boys set up a government of their own and had a brief taste of parliamentary procedure. Each boy held some city, county, or state office: Carl lvinely, lawyer and a member of the State Pa- trol: jim Xvildman, City Health Commissioner, Jon Page, Safety Director, Charles Thurman, member of the l-louse of Representatives. Buck- eye Boys' State was divided into five countries each consisting of four cities. Entertainment was provided every evening at the auditorium. Guest speakers included Governor C. William O'Neil and last year's governor of Buckeye Boy's State. Lelt tn righl: Charles Thurman, .Ion Page, Faye Sipe, Brenda Stork, Carl Winely, and james W ildman. The Thespian Club is composed of students interested in drama, lllembership is composed of students who have appeared in plays, assisted in the production of plays, aided in the adver- tising for plays, and assisted in the costumes and make-up for the actors. Play production was handirapped somewhat this year due to illness of one of the stars. A numhcr of girls had worked for several weeks to prepare for the play TYVELVIQ ANGRY YVO- MENQ only to have the production cancelled at the last minute due to the serious illness of the leading lady'l. The play was rescheduletl and was presented in March of this school year. Mr. Charles Funk is the faculty sponsor for the Thespiztns. New members are initiated into the club at formal initiation ceremonies which are impressive to say the least. Members of the Thespians will take part in spring contests in speech and one-act play to be held at several of the colleges and universities. SENIOR CHOIR As has been the custom of the past, Shelby High School had a very excellent choir during this school year untler the direction ol' Mr. Paul Braden. The choir gave several outstanding con- certs and periorinances during' the year with the Christmas program, the Spring Concert, and the Baccalatu-eate Service as the most outstanding. For the second consecutive year the choir gave concerts lor the elementary school pupils before the Christmas program on December I5. One ol' the IHOSL enjoyable occasions for the choir members was the annual trip to Tiffin on March 28 for the annual Northern Ohio Choir Festival. Other schools participating were iVil- lard, Bellevue, and Tiliin Columbian. The peak of the practices lor the year was reached on the evening ol May 4 when the au- nttal Spring Concert was presented. This pro- gram was colorful in that sacred and secular numbers as well as modern numbers were pre- sented for the enjoyment ol thc audience. Firsl rote, Url! WHIPPET VARSITY FOOTBALL The Shelby Whippet Football Team opened the 1957 season by defeating Dover IAIigh-7-0- in a half-game pre-vue. The lllhippets then rolled over their next four opponents inrluding a tough Tiffin Columbian team that was sup- posed to win the league title. Due to the flu epidemic, the games with Nor- walk and Galion were postponed until later in the season. In place of the Galion game, Shelby played host to the team from Ravenna, Ohio. Shelby lost this game for their first defeat of the season. The team then smashed l'Villard 47-0 and traveled to Upper Sandusky the following week to play one ol' the better teams in the league and area. The Whippets remained undefeated in league play by scoring 27 points in the third quarter to make their total flll to Upper's 18. Little opposition occurred until the Galion game which was played on a Saturday afternoon -November 23. Since neither team had been dc- featetl in league play, the winner would become the N O I. Champions. The lvhippets were out to win but could not match the superior effort of the Galion club. :This serond loss in the sca- son made the record for the Xllhippets at 9 wins and 2 losses. , Jnerbtnfhli an 1' f 2 s I Mui rmv, Us-fl In righlj: Bill Trout, Wayne jackson, Carl Shepherd, and Norman Clevenger. FOOTBALL AWARDS The Shelby junior Chamber of Commerce Awards for the football season of 1957 for the outstanding lineman and back went to Bill Trout and Russell Hepner, respectively. These two young men were graded the highest for the entire season. The grading is done by the foot- ball coaches after they review the films after earh week's game. This requires several hours for scoring in that each player is graded on every play. At the annual football banquet which was held this year at lVilkins Depot, Trout and Hep- ner received trophies. The players who received the RI. C. Award each week during the season were given certificates for these games. The following is a list of players who received certificates and the games in which they were rated very high: Russell I-lepner - Ashland, Bellevue, Tiffin, Norwalk, Madison, and Racenna. O. L. Champ- ionships. However, this year's team did not fare so well. Those who base their opinions of a team on the season record would probably say that Shelby's basketball team was unsuccessful in the '57-'58 season. But there is something more to be said ofa basketball team than its record. A team can play a good brand of basketball and yet lose several close contests. Such was the story of this year's team. Lacking the all-im- portant height factor, this team hatl to play a brand of basketball based on one hundred per cent effort by each man on the floor. They knew before the season started that this was what was needed and they became determined to do just that. Although as the season progressed there seemed to be reason for cliscouragement, these men never quit trying. For their fine sportstnan- ship and team spirit, Shelby can be justly proud of this year's team. Each player carried Shelby's spirit within himself, never allowing it to grow dim. Russ Hepner, the N. O. L.'s leading scorer and forward on the all-league team, played aggressive and spirited basketball throughout the season. Bob Shedenhelm and Larry St. john put forth great effort in the rebound department and out- bounded their much taller opponents in each game. Lennie Reidel, Don Loveless, Hlayne Ingram, and Dave Grove played great basketball through- out thc season. Although the remaining Whippets on the var- sity teant saw limited action, they gained valu- able experience which they will be able to use to good advantage in the next season. Don Loveless seems to be all alone and in the air as he swishcs in another shut. L. by making a clean sv eep of the Northern Ohio League Meet, the Ylfooster Night Relays, and the Upper Sandusky Nite Re- lays - all for the third straight year for 9 trophies in 3 years time. The Track Squad also made a fine showing in its dual meets by overcoming Galion, 73 to 45: Madison, 87 to 513 VVil1ard 103113 to 14-2133 and Tiffin, 79 to 39. Its only loss was to a strong Bucyrus team - 74-5X6 to 43-l!6. The reserve team serves a training ground for young track stars to observe, train, and prepare to take the places of varsity members whenever the time comes. They are just as anxious to make their records as excellent as the 1955, 11156, and 1957 teams of Shelby High. man. Carl Koontz, Mark Lowmiller, Charles Miller, and Wilbur Metzger. This year, the WHIPPET'l'ES, donning new uniforms of identical gray skirts, red sweaters, and while collars, inspired the football and bas- ketball teams at the home games as well as those away. They made an attractive picture in the new uniforms. An executive committee com- posed ol two girls from each class in school set up rules and regulations for the club, selected the uniforms, and planned the dance that was sponsored by the pep group. Mrs. Vera Kuhn Secretary to the Superintendent of Schools When we started in school in Shelby or in other places, Mr. McCollough started at Shelby High School as the principal. We met him as students when we entered this school six years ago as seventh graders. Since that time we have learned to know him, hear his voice daily over the public address system fsornetimes face to face to our chagrinj , to ask his advice in choice of subjects or assistance in our work, and to re- spect him.
