The Laffertys-Robert, Karen, Anne, Mrs. Betty, and Mr. Robert Lafferty. DEDICATIO . . . r. Robert Lafferty For our dedication it is quite natural and fitting for us, the SCARLET S Staff, to choose a man well-known and well-liked by the Senior class. Bob Lafferty, with his sparkling humor and ready wit, has made algebra a lively subiect for scores of fresh- men and iuniors. His proficiency as a sportswriter is admired by both SheIby's fans and players. As senior class advisor, he lends the executive committee and senior stand timely and valuable advice. Being transportation director, it is upon his word that Shelby students cheer or groan on wintry mornings. Such a combination of versa- tility and pleasant character is a rare find in anyone's yearbook. 6 iii

In Memor o : 1 Miss Leah Summer The Staff of the SCARLET S wishes to take this opportunity to honor the memory of one of the veterans of the teaching staff in the Shelby schools. Miss Leah Summer, a first grade instructor at Auburn Elementary School, passed away at the local hospital on Wednesday, January 16, 1957. She was stricken while in her 47th year of teaching first graders. This is an unusual record in itself. But greater still is the memory that many of us have of her. Her gentle manner, her pleasant smile, her intelligent under- standing of our many problems as six-year-olds will always be remembered and appreciated. Miss Summer received her training for teaching at the College of Wooster and Kent State University. She was first employed as a teacher by The Shelby Board of Education on July 14, 1910. Her sister, Miss Dora Summer, is an instructor of Latin at Shelby High School. '
