Robert Lafferty For our dedication it is quite natural and fitting for us, the SCARLET S Staff, to choose a man well-known and well-liked by the Senior class. Bob Lafferty, with his sparkling humor and ready wit, has made algebra a lively subiect for scores of fresh- men and iuniors. His proficiency as a sportswriter is admired by both SheIby's fans and players. As senior class advisor, he lends the executive committee and senior stand timely and valuable advice. Being transportation director, it is upon his word that Shelby students cheer or groan on wintry mornings. Such a combination of versa- tility and pleasant character is a rare find in anyone's yearbook. 6 iii In Memor o : 1 Miss Leah Summer The Staff of the SCARLET S wishes to take this opportunity to honor the memory of one of the veterans of the teaching staff in the Shelby schools. Miss Leah Summer, a first grade instructor at Auburn Elementary School, passed away at the local hospital on Wednesday, January 16, 1957. She was stricken while in her 47th year of teaching first graders. This is an unusual record in itself. But greater still is the memory that many of us have of her. Her gentle manner, her pleasant smile, her intelligent under- standing of our many problems as six-year-olds will always be remembered and appreciated. Miss Summer received her training for teaching at the College of Wooster and Kent State University. She was first employed as a teacher by The Shelby Board of Education on July 14, 1910. Her sister, Miss Dora Summer, is an instructor of Latin at Shelby High School. ' Mr. Wayne M. Carlefon Mr. E. Paul Curry, Presidenf Member Mr. S. Reymer Bricker, Vice-President Mr. Leonard Waines, Member Dr. E. D. Dowds Member Mr. Sanford Weaver, Clerk-Treasurer Mr. E. C. Lundberg, School Architect of Cincinnati, Ohio Superintendent of Shelby Schools Providing Shelby's hundreds of students with modern buildings, adequate playgrounds and athletic facilities, well-trained teachers, and a wide curriculum is no easy iob for our superintendent of schools. It requires a supe- rior knowledge and foresight of the needs of our students both now and in the future. We Rocketteers have but one man to thank for our modern and smooth-running school system-the very capable Byron H. Carmean. Mrs. Jayne lnnis, Secretary for the Superintendent of Schools and the Clerk-Treasurer of The Board of Education. Mr. Byron H. Carmean, A. B., M. A. MR. J. E. MCCOLLOUGH, A. B., M. A. At times Mr. McCollough must think that we are like rockets and even iet operated. This hap- pens when he sees us running around the halls, attending many meetings and clubs, making much noise, and going everywhere in a hurry. However by his patience and understanding he has learned to see us as young people who are having a good time and who are endeavoring to learn something in this school of life. By his patience and understanding he has en- deared himself to the students of Shelby High. Hi h School Principal MISS JEANETTE WILL Secretary Hi h School acult . . . Miss Marie Hughes, B. A. The girls made popcorn balls and Christmas corsages which were sold in the school. They also sold bottles of vanilla and butter flavoring. This year for the first time the club spon- sored a community work day. Each girl in the club had either a iob at home or elsewhere and gave the money earned for two hours of that day to the club. Another proiect to earn money was their annual bake sale in March. On February 16, the FHA and FFA co-sponsored the Valentine dance, Royal Hearts Ball . The reign- ing court was: Queen, Donna Marshall, King, John Wagoner, and attendants, Charlene Johnson, Barbara Hoppes, Carl Winely, David Grove. One of the first social events of the year was the fall county FHA rally at Bellville. The spring county FHA rally was held here at the high school. This year was no exception. Under the very capable direction of Mr. Paul Braden the choir gave many outstanding performances. This year, for the first time, the choir sang at the grade schools before appearing before the general public at the Christmas concert, Decem- ber l6. After Christmas vacation, the choir be- gan to prepare for the district contest, March 23. In April, Shelby was host to Willard, Norwalk, and Bucyrus for one of the Northern Ohio League Choir Festivals. The League's eight schools were divided into two groups, having four schools in each group participating together. May 5, the choir presented the spring concert and, for its final performance, sang at the Bacca- laureate service, thus ending a very successful year. He has been named as the most outstanding basketball player that Shelby produced. During this season he averaged 36.6 points per gameg thus making him the highest individual scorer in the State of Ohio. He also scored the most points in a single game when he made 60 points in the Galion-Shelby game on the home floor. Larry captained the basketball team to the highest position that any Shelby team has yet achieved. He boosted the Whip- pets' rating in the state in the INS and AP polls to the 7th place in the state. Larry was nominated and selected for ALL-OHIO rating and was named second most outstanding player in the state in 1956-1957. Larry's talents do not stop at basketballp he also excels in track and baseball. He is a star pitcher for the Whippets and a high iumper for the track squad. Since there are many members, the girls organized 6 teams and a schedule this year whereas 4 teams play each Monday night. ln order to earn an S letter, the girls have to obtain 400 points. Everytime a girl participates in any sport, she earns 5 points. We are sure that every girl after completing a season with the G A A has the trait of a good sportswoman. This annual initiation was brought to a halt by school officials when it was learned that this type of hazing is forbidden by state law. The disappointment of not being able to put other members through the ritual is soothed by the fact that these boys really have something to tell their grandchildren.
