DEDIC1-XTISUN Doctor Edward D. Dowds Any community that can point to the service of one citizen when that service has been sacrificial at various times can really say: That man is truly a splendid citizen, a true friend to the members of this community. That is what can be said of the service of Dr. Edward D. Dowds. For the past twenty-three years, Dr. Dowds has been a member of the Shelby Board of Education. He was first elected to this position by a large majority on November 3, 1925, and took oiiice the fol- lowing January. He has held that ofice continuously since that time. Dr. Dowds has seen the school system of this city grow and improve. He has taken an active interest in all school ac- tivities. It has been stated that he would not miss a football game. His inspiration has been welcomed by community, by the school authorities, and by the school per- sonnel. He has been a leader in community affairs, in church groups, in service organi- zations, and in professional circles. It is appropos that the members of the staff of the 1949 edition of the SCARLET S of Shelby High School honor Dr. Dowds for the service he has rendered. It is an honor to dedicate this issue of the year- book to Dr. E. D. Dowds.
