FARMERS CO-OP BUSINESS ASS'N Shelby-Rising City Gresham Osceola tops In VB There were two things very unique about the 1987 volleyball season. First of all, the varsity girls lost three championship games all to the same team. The reserves went their second year in a row without a loss. Mr. Jurrens said that the volleyball season went smoothly. The team was very flexible, they were willing to try new formations and they seemed to work together well. Jurrens' goals for the year was to provide each team the opportunity to play at the highest level possible. He also wanted to give each player the opportunity to develope as fast and as efficiently as possible. Jurrens said that Melanie Lock man and Kimberly Zoerb were both outstanding players. They both received first team all conference and all-Tournament at David City. Margo Abbott, Nor- ma Kula and Julie Hegi also got All-Tournament at David City. Mr. Jurrens thought that being kept from winning three different champion ships by the same team was unusual. Hopefully in the next year or two we will be able to win those that got away this year. Jurrens thought that the highlight of the season was the development and improvement of so many players. Shelby had a number of people make really outstanding progress in skill level and maturity level, he said. Terry Chadek is the coach for the reserves. Chadek said that he be- lieved the girls played very well no matter what combination of people he used. He said. This year's team's floor play was very good, and they rarely gave up a point. The team played with a lot of intensity this year , ........... , ,K.„K +K ■ TOP LEFT: (Bump)-Kimberly Zoerb bumps which helped them to H the ball while Melanie Lockman and Den- their perfect season. Joe's Quick Shoppie Shelby. NE 68662 Open 6:00 A M. to 11:00 P.M. 7 days a week 527-6331 Huskies rally, go 5 4 The 1987 Football season was sort of unique. It was the first time since 1972 that Shelby has lost three games in a row, but then came back and won five straight. I think this was a credit to the attitude of the team to be able to keep working and come back, said Head Coach John O'Brien. The Highlights of the season had to be defeating Osceola and David City, a rated C-1 team. ”1 feel very good. Our record was actually as good as my highest hopes. I am not putting down the talent on our team. I'm simply saying that we played some very good teams. I feel really good but yet I think back to several games that, with any luck, we lost but could have won. said O'Brien. The team set 19 goals for the year. Ten of the 19 were achieved, and the Shelby Huskies ended their season with a record of 5-4. The 1987 season was a success. The first three losses went to rated teams. First to Genoa, which Shelby lost 0-7 in overtime. The second was homecoming which was lost 6-7 to Hender- son, and our third was to the Vikings of Stromsburg 6-27. Next came the rally. Shelby took five in a row to achieve a 5-3 record by defeating East Butler, Osceola, Fullerton, David City, and Nebraska Luth- eran. Then came the game which decided whether, we possibly went to state. We were beaten by Dorchester 7-26. There were some outstanding players this year. Jeff Bil- stein received first team tackle honors. Russ Hop- wood and Kevin Peterson from Stromsburg tied for first team quarterback. Defensively, Brian Micek received first team line- man. Jeff Bilstein also re- ceived honorable men- tion for defensive line- man. Jay Voss received honorable mention for defensive end. Russ Hopwood and Al- len Smith received honor- able mention for line- backers. Also, Jamie Alt received honorable men- tion for defensive back. Jeff Mitchell received honorable mention for wide receiver. TOP: (Pass Play)- Russ Hopwood fades back to pass.
