Shelby community special: passes Bond Issue The patrons of the school district of Shelby voted on a special bond issue to renovate part of the pre- sent school building and to build on additional space. The vote was held November TO, 1987, and the bond issue passed. Supporters felt the bond issue was needed to im- prove the overall education of students. The following changes are planned: The present library will be used for additional office work space. The kitchen and lunchroom will be made into a cen- tral library for the elementary and high school. A partition will separate the Resource Room and Chap- ter I areas. A teacher's work area and guidance counselor area will be located in the basement along with a wellness center. An expanded area for the building's mechanical needs will also be included. The new construction will include the following: Three new classrooms for grades four, five and six. This will remove these grades from the basement. A new kitchen will be built, and also an all-purpose room. The all-purpose room will be used for a lunch area, a place for band, volleyball, and basketball practices and as a place for physical education classes and elementary recesses during inclement weather. In addition, it will also be used as a testing center for large groups. The benefits of the bond issue are many: It will provide additional flexible learning space which can be adaptable to constant changes in curriculum and enrollment demands. Various school activities prac- tice sessions can be completed earlier so students can be home for evening meals and study time. The atmosphere of the school lunch program will be im- proved and disruptive noise levels in classroom areas will be reduced. Improved teaching conditions will allow the district to attract and keep well-qualified instructors. Finally, it will provide a safe and healthy learning atmosphere for all children in the school dis- trict. s
