Jeremy Smith (staff) The 1987-88 yearbook theme “Off the Wall was chosen by the yearbook staff because we felt it described the students, our school and the school year “Off the Wall means different, unique. We are proud of the many ways our school is different from any other. Likewise, we are proud of our individual differences that make each of us special. By using our unique skills and abilities, we accomplished a lot during the school year. Our community passed a bond issue to improve the school, and it formed the Booster Club. Mrs. Mitchell won a teaching award. Our football team upset David City, a rated C-1 team. The one-act play cast earned a superior rating. The juniors brought a live band back to prom. Mr. Shanahan's study hall was commended for thinking and questioning by a representative of the Smithsonian Institute. These are just a few of the many things that set us, our school, and this year, apart. This year will be written on the walls within our memories forever. His hobbies were hunting, fish- ing, trapping, and just having fun. Darrin M. Hopwood was 16 years old and a junior in high school. He participated in football and band. He was active in St. Paul Lutheran League. Darrin was the youngest of Dale and Delores Hopwood. Darrin and Steve will be greatly missed by friends and family. Mitchell Outstanding 4 4 Mrs. Mitchell was chosen for an Outstanding Teachers award by the Omaha World-Herald. Doug and Karen Zoerb nominated her for the award. “I was extremely happy to receive this award. It is an honor that any teacher would cherish. Just to be nominated for such an award is a real honor and to be selected as a recipient of the award is even more special. Mrs. Mitchell said she was extremely surprised when she was notified that she won the award because she didn't even know that she was nominated. She found out the day before they published it in the newspaper. When she heard she got it, she was dumbfounded. She said she had to reread it to believe it. Mrs. Mitchell said she has always tried to do her best with her kids and her work. Mrs. Mitchell also said she cares truly for her kids in school and out of school. Mrs. Mitchell said, “It is very difficult for an individual to be able to judge if they deserve an award. I have always tried to do the very best I can to help each of my students whether it be in their classwork or with personal problems or concerns. I do truly care about 'my kids' and what happens to them both in school and out. I do want to add that any teacher is only as good or as effective as the teachers, students, staff, and community that surround and support him or her and I therefore feel that if I deserve this award it's because of all these other people. Shelby community special: passes Bond Issue The patrons of the school district of Shelby voted on a special bond issue to renovate part of the pre- sent school building and to build on additional space. The vote was held November TO, 1987, and the bond issue passed. Supporters felt the bond issue was needed to im- prove the overall education of students. The following changes are planned: The present library will be used for additional office work space. The kitchen and lunchroom will be made into a cen- tral library for the elementary and high school. A partition will separate the Resource Room and Chap- ter I areas. A teacher's work area and guidance counselor area will be located in the basement along with a wellness center. An expanded area for the building's mechanical needs will also be included. The new construction will include the following: Three new classrooms for grades four, five and six. This will remove these grades from the basement. A new kitchen will be built, and also an all-purpose room. The all-purpose room will be used for a lunch area, a place for band, volleyball, and basketball practices and as a place for physical education classes and elementary recesses during inclement weather. In addition, it will also be used as a testing center for large groups. The benefits of the bond issue are many: It will provide additional flexible learning space which can be adaptable to constant changes in curriculum and enrollment demands. Various school activities prac- tice sessions can be completed earlier so students can be home for evening meals and study time. The atmosphere of the school lunch program will be im- proved and disruptive noise levels in classroom areas will be reduced. Improved teaching conditions will allow the district to attract and keep well-qualified instructors. Finally, it will provide a safe and healthy learning atmosphere for all children in the school dis- trict. s FARMERS CO-OP BUSINESS ASS'N Shelby-Rising City Gresham Osceola tops In VB There were two things very unique about the 1987 volleyball season. First of all, the varsity girls lost three championship games all to the same team. The reserves went their second year in a row without a loss. Mr. Jurrens said that the volleyball season went smoothly. The team was very flexible, they were willing to try new formations and they seemed to work together well. Jurrens' goals for the year was to provide each team the opportunity to play at the highest level possible. He also wanted to give each player the opportunity to develope as fast and as efficiently as possible. Jurrens said that Melanie Lock man and Kimberly Zoerb were both outstanding players. They both received first team all conference and all-Tournament at David City. Margo Abbott, Nor- ma Kula and Julie Hegi also got All-Tournament at David City. Mr. Jurrens thought that being kept from winning three different champion ships by the same team was unusual. Hopefully in the next year or two we will be able to win those that got away this year. Jurrens thought that the highlight of the season was the development and improvement of so many players. Shelby had a number of people make really outstanding progress in skill level and maturity level, he said. Terry Chadek is the coach for the reserves. Chadek said that he be- lieved the girls played very well no matter what combination of people he used. He said. This year's team's floor play was very good, and they rarely gave up a point. NE 68662 Open 6:00 A M. to 11:00 P.M. 7 days a week 527-6331 Huskies rally, go 5 4 The 1987 Football season was sort of unique. It was the first time since 1972 that Shelby has lost three games in a row, but then came back and won five straight. I think this was a credit to the attitude of the team to be able to keep working and come back, said Head Coach John O'Brien. The Highlights of the season had to be defeating Osceola and David City, a rated C-1 team. ”1 feel very good. Our record was actually as good as my highest hopes. I am not putting down the talent on our team. I'm simply saying that we played some very good teams. I feel really good but yet I think back to several games that, with any luck, we lost but could have won. said O'Brien. The team set 19 goals for the year. Ten of the 19 were achieved, and the Shelby Huskies ended their season with a record of 5-4. The 1987 season was a success. The first three losses went to rated teams. First to Genoa, which Shelby lost 0-7 in overtime. The second was homecoming which was lost 6-7 to Hender- son, and our third was to the Vikings of Stromsburg 6-27. Next came the rally. Shelby took five in a row to achieve a 5-3 record by defeating East Butler, Osceola, Fullerton, David City, and Nebraska Luth- eran. Then came the game which decided whether, we possibly went to state. We were beaten by Dorchester 7-26. There were some outstanding players this year. Jeff Bil- stein received first team tackle honors. Russ Hop- wood and Kevin Peterson from Stromsburg tied for first team quarterback. Defensively, Brian Micek received first team line- man. Jeff Bilstein also re- ceived honorable men- tion for defensive line- man. Jay Voss received honorable mention for defensive end. Russ Hopwood and Al- len Smith received honor- able mention for line- backers. Also, Jamie Alt received honorable men- tion for defensive back. The newly organized Booster Club held a post-homecoming beach party, complete with ten yards of sand. The beach party consisted of a dance with Roger Houdersheldt D.J. A sand volleyball tournament was won by Jeff Bilstein, Renee Michener, Jeff Mitchell, and Norma Kula. The hoola hoop contest and limbo contest were won by Karla Carlson and Mark Smith, respectively. About seventy- five people ate sandwiches and chips at the party. The Booster Club co- chairpersons were Kathy Rief and Janelle Carlson. Even though the week was short due to Labor Day, Spirit Week activi- ties kept the mood. Tuesday saw everyone dressed in black and gold. On Wednesday numerous gangs were seen around the school. Cam- eras were clicking as the tourists invaded on Thurs- day. Friday was slum day and everyone could be seen in their worst attire. This year's theme was Children's Stories and Fairy Tales . After a busy Friday morning building floats, each class got to show off their creations in the parade. In the ele- mentary division, the first grade took first place and fifth grade won sec- ond. The eighth grade won first and seventh grade took second in ju- nior high. In the high school division, the junior royalty float won and the sophomores took sec- ond. The commercial en- tries were won by the Le- gion Auxiliary and Rick's Body Shop. After a pep rally Thurs- day, the volleyball team beat Fullerton 15-6 and 15-7. On Friday, luck just wasn't with the home team as the Huskies from Henderson dealt Shelby their first Homecoming loss since 1972, 7-6. After the football game, the traditional coronation was held in the gym. The 1986 King Chad Abbott crowned the new Queen Kimberly Zoerb. Allen Smith be- came the 1987 Home- coming King when crowned by last year's Queen, Stephanie Jo- hannsen. Attendants were Julie Hegi, Denise Rinkol, Michelle William- son, T.J. They lost their pep club and got a booster club, which includes people and businesses of the community. The 1987- 88 cheerleader's were the first to cheer at both boys' and girls' games. Some of the highlights of this year's cheerleading were the pep rallies for homecoming and basketball tournaments. During the homecoming pep rally the football coaches shaved balloons over some of the football play- ers heads, trying not to pop the balloons. Girls battle powerhouses In SB There was one thing extraordinary about this season. Two teams in our conference. Osceola and Edst Butler, were rated 1 and 2 in the state throughout much of the season. The highlight of the 1987-88 season girls' basketball season was insuring a winning season by defeating the David City Scouts, said Mr. O'Brien. Coach O'Brien was happy with the winning season this year. He thought though, there were some games that the girls could hdve won but lost. The quality of the opposing teams made a winning season feel good. Some of fhe goals as a coach O'Brien set were a winning season and continued improvement by the team as the year progressed. Two other goals that the team achieved were a winning season and a 43% success rate from the field. TOP RIGHT: Defense-Tricia Davis tries to distract Julie Reimers from shooting the ball. The line was a big factor in comebacks and at the end of close games. This year's season went smoothly, but we were a little disappointed in the way our win-loss record turned out, said Coach Terry Fusco. We were in every game right to the end but we seemed to have trouble in the second and third quarters, letting teams get six or eight points ahead of us. The highlight of fhe season was finishing third in the very tough Central Eight Conference Tournament. Shelby defeated the Osceola Bulldogs to take third. I feel we have a good base to build on, with two returning starters and two part-time players that saw action in critical situations, said Fusco. The Huskies started out by winning the first three games by a large margin, but falling to a rated team, Humphrey High. In the first round the Huskies played Fullerton again, and again walked away with the victory. Then came the David City Scouts, and we were de- feated. Along came Osceola gain, but this time the Huskies took home the win and third place in the Central Eight Conference Tournament. Next came Genoa and a 55-53 victory. Polk-Hord- ville and David City were different sto- ries though, and the Huskies were de- feated by both. Then came an easy win over Rising City, 70-33. The last home game was with Silver Creek. It was senior night, and Shelby won 83-66. The last game of the season came in the first round of the sub- district. An Off the Wall study hall - Mr. Shanahan, Margo Ab- bott, Kelly lilienthai, Jeff Kuhnel, Jamie Alt, Larry Charbon- neau, David Webster, Dwayne Kula and Mike Hiemer Ho avsragsi study hall Congratulations! It is refreshing indeed to find that there are still students and teachers willing to question what 'Everybody Knows'! stated James Sharp of the Albert Einstein Planetarium at the Smithsonian Institute after reading a letter from Richard Shanahan's study hall. One day, Mr. Shanahan and his Off the Wall study Hall class discussed the subject of the earth's rotation and found from school sources that the earth revolves around the sun every 365.25636 days. A leap year comes every four years because of the extra six hours (.25 days). But the questions rose as to what happens to the extra .00636 of a day. They calculated that there should be an extra leap day every 200 years. The class asked these questions: 1. Has there been an extra leap day every two hun- dred years? 2. If so, how is it accounted for on the calendar? 3. If our calculations are correct, and this hasn't been changed, why hasn't it been changed? They got a response from James Sharp. He wrote that if we went by the Star (sidereal) Year (which is what the students had based their calculations on), the calendar would not be synchronized with the seasons. The calen- dar must by synchronized as well as possible with the seasons or eventually there would be heat waves in January and blizzards in July. For this reason the star year is not used to make calendars. The important period of time for calendrical purpose is the time from the beginning of a particular season to the beginning of the same particular season the follow- ing year, or the time between equivalent equinoxes. This period is known as the tropical year, and is approxi- matly 365.24219 days (actually shorter than the 365.25636-day year used in the time of Julius Caesar to make the Julian calendar). Because of this difference, Caesar's calender gradu- ally wandered so that by the 16th century spring start- ed on the tenth of March. During thaf time Pope Greg- ory XIII instructed his Vatican astronomer, Clavius, to solve the problem, which he did, and a new corrected calendar, which was proclaimed in 1582, went into ef- fect the following year in most Catholic nations. The American colonies didn't accept it until 1752. Mr. Sharp stated that, with the corrected, Gregorian calendar we use today, we don't have a leap year every four years even though “everybody knows we do. It turns out everyone is wrong. We have a leap year in each year divisable by four, except years end- ing in 00. There is a leap year in these years if it is divisable by 400. For example, 1896 was a leap year, but 1900 was not. The next skipped leap year will be in 2100. A correction may have to be made in a few thou- sand years, although there is some evidence that changes in the rotation period of the earth may make the calendar, merely by chance of course, more ac- curate than we thought. Mr. Sharp concluded the letter to Mr. Shanahan and his study hall: (Larry Charbonneau. Margo Abbott, Ja- mie Alt, Kelli Lilienthai, Mike Heimer, Dwayne Kula, David Webster, and Jeff Kuhnel) with I hope you find the foregoing information of interest. And keep on ques- tioning: that is, after all, the essence of science! 39 Underclassmen Unique or Unsual Memories of 1987-88 Deb- bie Wells- When our class didn't fight over homecoming.
