AN EXCITING SENIOR TRIP April 8. 1987 was the start of our Senior Educa- tional tour to Kansas City. Our tours included the General Motors factory, the Hallmark Visitors’ Cen- ter. Kansas City Board of Trade, the Federal Re- serve Bank, and the University of Missouri-Kansas City Schools of Dentistry and of Medicine. We also attended a Kansas City Royals-Chicago White Sox baseball game, and enjoyed a delicious meal at the Gold Buffet. Our Senior Trip was filled with many memories that we will always treasure.

Shelby Public School adopted an eight-period day for the 1986-87 school year. With the addition of another period, school begins at 8:17 a m. and ends at 3:41 p.m with 50-minute class sessions. Last year classes began at 8:25 a.m. and dismissed at 3:32 p.m. Going to the eight-period day distributes courses so students have more of a choice in classes they need to further their education. A lot of thought was involved, but with the help of students, parents, teachers and the school self-evaluation, the system made the change. The new classes available this year include health (full year), daily physical education, advanced mathematical concepts, high school vocal music daily, one semester business applications and computer applications courses. Reading 8 and beginning speech 10 to alternate with an introduction to computers and CPR. Some of these changes were made to fulfill requirements of the Nebraska Department of Education. “I feel that the extended day has it’s advantages and disadvantages.” said social studies teacher Mr. Chadek. “An advantage might be that students are able to take more classes and can be exposed to things they weren’t able to learn before. The disadvantage is that some students have an overload of subjects and cannot concentrate fully on a few courses which could hamper their learning in some classes.” Mr. Chadek teaches daily physical education 9-12 He said that it is good that students can get the exercise they need. The only problem is the 3-1 ratio of boys over girls. Most of the people in the sophomore class will, at some time in their future, need to at least know some of the basics of using a computer,” said science and computer teacher Mr Gray ” These students who also plan on entering the area of business or computer science can get some idea how to plan, write, edit, and use a computer program This program also helps to develope a students logical thinking skills.” Another class taught that this year is CPR. Principal Mr. Jones feels that this class is very helpful to a student for it may save someone’s life. Speech is an aspect of our everyday communication.” said art and speech teacher Mrs. Tomasevicz. Learning to communicate effectively becomes an essential tool in developing our personal and professional progress. I feel the new speech class allows sophomores the opportunity to learn to express their ideas in clear, concise manner, and gives helpful instruction in leading to the eventual goal of truly effective communication. “Advanced mathematical concepts is a class that will be helpful to me.” says Junior Tammy Bodtke. I will need four years of math, and with this new class. I will get the fourth one to help me with my career in engineering.” “ Advanced mathematical concepts is a very hard class.” says Senior Stephanie Johannsen. I think it will help me in the years to come.”
