We hope some day. twenty years or so down the road, you will be able to pull out this yearbook and recall all of the great times that were had in the 1986-1987 school year. .................... Instead of going to school in the morning or afternoon, this year's Kindergarteners go to school every other day. One week they go on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday and the next week they go on Tuesday and Thursday. “Because of this new system the children get to do more extra activi- ties,” says Mrs. Ott. They have music, art, and P.E. everyday. They also get a half hour rest period.” The children like riding the big yellow school buses and eating lunch at school. One little boy said, I wish I could come to school every day!” Since the children are going to school all day this year it will be easier for them to adapt to first grade, although, then they will get to go to school everyday instead of every other day. AN EXCITING SENIOR TRIP April 8. 1987 was the start of our Senior Educa- tional tour to Kansas City. Our tours included the General Motors factory, the Hallmark Visitors’ Cen- ter. Kansas City Board of Trade, the Federal Re- serve Bank, and the University of Missouri-Kansas City Schools of Dentistry and of Medicine. We also attended a Kansas City Royals-Chicago White Sox baseball game, and enjoyed a delicious meal at the Gold Buffet. Our Senior Trip was filled with many memories that we will always treasure. Shelby Public School adopted an eight-period day for the 1986-87 school year. With the addition of another period, school begins at 8:17 a m. and ends at 3:41 p.m with 50-minute class sessions. Last year classes began at 8:25 a.m. and dismissed at 3:32 p.m. Going to the eight-period day distributes courses so students have more of a choice in classes they need to further their education. A lot of thought was involved, but with the help of students, parents, teachers and the school self-evaluation, the system made the change. The new classes available this year include health (full year), daily physical education, advanced mathematical concepts, high school vocal music daily, one semester business applications and computer applications courses. Reading 8 and beginning speech 10 to alternate with an introduction to computers and CPR. Some of these changes were made to fulfill requirements of the Nebraska Department of Education. “I feel that the extended day has it’s advantages and disadvantages.” said social studies teacher Mr. Chadek. “An advantage might be that students are able to take more classes and can be exposed to things they weren’t able to learn before. The disadvantage is that some students have an overload of subjects and cannot concentrate fully on a few courses which could hamper their learning in some classes.” Mr. Chadek teaches daily physical education 9-12 He said that it is good that students can get the exercise they need. The only problem is the 3-1 ratio of boys over girls. Most of the people in the sophomore class will, at some time in their future, need to at least know some of the basics of using a computer,” said science and computer teacher Mr Gray ” These students who also plan on entering the area of business or computer science can get some idea how to plan, write, edit, and use a computer program This program also helps to develope a students logical thinking skills.” Another class taught that this year is CPR. Principal Mr. Jones feels that this class is very helpful to a student for it may save someone’s life. Speech is an aspect of our everyday communication.” said art and speech teacher Mrs. Tomasevicz. Learning to communicate effectively becomes an essential tool in developing our personal and professional progress. I feel the new speech class allows sophomores the opportunity to learn to express their ideas in clear, concise manner, and gives helpful instruction in leading to the eventual goal of truly effective communication. “Advanced mathematical concepts is a class that will be helpful to me.” says Junior Tammy Bodtke. I will need four years of math, and with this new class. I will get the fourth one to help me with my career in engineering.” “ Advanced mathematical concepts is a very hard class.” says Senior Stephanie Johannsen. Spectator Mark Fusco said that Volley- ball is definitely back in Shel- by. And from the looks of things, he's right. The Huskies had quite a few wins and dropped a couple of losses before their spectacular win over David City in regular sea- son play. Senior Stephanie Peterson said, “It felt great to win -the game against David City! Then the girls went on to sub-districts to play Stroms- burg and bring around a victo- ry. The same nights our hopes of competing in state tourna- ments were blown away when we were, beat by Osceola. Some comments about the season by Coach Jurrens were that the girls showed honest effort, hard work, and readily accepted responsibility. He also said the season highlight was beating David City for conference championship. A comment by Holly Hernbloom about the season was. “It was fun to have a winning season and an honor to be confer- ence champs. NE 564-3231 Memories of the 1986 football season held many ups and downs as is shown by the 5-4 record. The Huskies met several tough oppo- nents and lost a few games but Coach O'Brien stated, The team effort was basically good. While of- fensively the Huskies sometimes sputtered, the defense was usually strong. One definite highlight of the sea- son would be the 6-0 Homecoming win over Osceola, which was battled out in the pouring rain. Even though the Huskies ended up with a winning record, some players feel they could have done better. Senior Captain Jeff Ingalls said, I don't feel we played our best throughout the season. Contrary to this attitude, the Hus- kies recieved many All-Conference awards. Earning a spot on All-Con- ference 1st team was Mike Scow as an offensive guard and defensive lineman. Mark Fusco tied for Defen- sive Back Secondary. Those that were named to All-Conference Hon orable Mention team were, Larry Tworek as offensive center and de- fensive end, Chuck Kuhnel as Line- backer and Allen Smith as Running Back. The toughest loss of the year to take, as always, was the last one against Dorchester. This year it was even more difficult because it pre- vented the Huskies from entering state playoffs. When it was all over injured Senior Larry Tworek said. “I was wishing I was in. They played with a lot of emotion and when it was over, I couldn’t believe it was over for good. The rest of the week was filled with students walking the halls in some very unusual outfits. Everyone dressed in their worst as “Bag Lady Day” was observed on Tuesday. On Wednesday a visitor to SHS might think he was at SHS hospi- tal. as everyone was dressing appro- priately for “Bandage Day. In order to get the spirit roaring for the volleyball game that night, Thursday was desig- nated as Extreme Black and Gold Day.” Inside out Grub day was the dress code for Friday as students decorated their floats. The senior members of the football team decided to show the volleyball team a few secret plays Thursday afternoon at the pep rally. The pep rally was highlighted by a cheer which sparked the Homecoming victory over Clarks. The I ady Huskies defeated the Bombers to start the 1986 Homecom- ing victories. Even though the air was damp on Friday, spirits could not be dampened as students prepared for the parade that afternoon. On Friday night, the football team was ready to go as they were faced with the bad weather and their arch-rivals, the Osceola Bulldogs. After a game delay due to bad weath- er. the Huskies pulled out of hard fought victory with a final score of 6-0. During half time, the winners of the parade competition were announced. The third grade won the grade school division, with their saying “The Great- sest Show On Earth-Shelby Huskies. This year’s theme “Sayings” was fur- ther carried out in the junior high and high school divisions. For the first time in 23 years, the seventh grade took first place in the jr. high division with Barking Up the Wrong Tree”. More traditions were broken as the Seniors' float “Life’s a Beach” received top honors in the senior hgih division. The climax of the week was the coronation after the football game. Following the introduction of the royalty, Chad Ab- bott and Stephanie Johannsen were crowned the new 1986 Homecoming King and Queen. Homecoming 1986 proved to be a special one for everyome involved. The first was held on December 6 at Newman Grove. The next one was on January 17 at Albion. Our conference meet was held in David City on February 28. We won second place. Then we traveled to Newman Grove for the District meet on March 20. We had three people who made the finals: Laura Cyza, Karen Korger, and Holly Hernbloom. Sandra Cyza not only made it to the finals, she qualified for state. Her informative speech on Physical Fitness got her there. Due to weather conditions, Sandra was not able to compete at the state level. Our last event was the three-act play. It was titled Break a Lea, by John O'Brien. Despite injuries and the weather, the play was enjoyed by all. The school performance was held on April 1 and the public one on April 3. We all had fun with this comedy play.
