HUSKEY 1985 NOW AND FOREVER The 1984-1985 Yearbook theme Now Forever was chosen by the yearbook staff because we feel that the memories we have will last forever. The following pictures freeze us in time to represent the way things are now. When we look back at these pic- tures in the years to come, the memories we will have will last for- ever. No one can ever take our memories away from us and that is what is so special. For these rea- sons, we fell that our theme Now . Forever is appropriate. There was a very good ‘attitude at the start of the season because the Senior girls wanted this to be the best season they had ever had. The season started off on a very fine note when the Lady Huskies took their show to Stromsburg, where they defeat- ed the Vikings in two quick sets, 15-1 and 15-3. After four impressive wins over Fullerton, Neb. Lutheran, Genoa, and St. Edward the ladies traveled to David City for the David City Invitational. In the first round Shelby played Wahoo and defeated them in two sets 15-10 and 15-5. In the Cham- pionship game Shelby faced a tough North Bend team. After winning the first game 15-12, the girls were really pumped up but in the next two sets they lost a couple of heartbreak- ers by the same score of 15-12. The next event was the Central 8 Conference Tourna- ment. The Lady Huskies trounce Nebraska Lutheran in the first round 15-0, 15-0, and turned back East Butler in the second round 15-9, 15-5. This gave them the right to play David City in the Championship game. After losing the first game 15-10, the girls came back with fire in their eye's to win the second set 15-2. In the third, the ladies couldn't get much going and were defeated 15-6, giving them second place in the tournament. Two weeks later the girls avenged their loss to David City by beating them in three hard fought sets, 15-4, 12-15, and 15-12 to give them the season championship in the Central 8 Conference. Shelby came into District play seeded number 1, and number 4 in the state. Shelby defeated Humphery St. Frances in three sets 17-15, 12-15 and 15-4. This set up the rematch between Shelby and Stromsburg. Lady Luck didn't seem to be with the Huskies as they lost in two sets 15-10 and 15-3. All- Conference selections were: Janice Grossnicklaus, first team, while Becky Fusco and Thersa Sobieszky received second team honors. Again, SHS won four in a row, be- fore taking on David City for the Central Eight Confer- ence title. The Huskeis lost a heartbreaker, 71-69, to end up second. The Huskeis went into district play as top seed. They squeaked by Humphrey St. Francis in overtime before blowing away Osceola and Humphrey to advance to the state tourney. In the first round at state they defeated the Dorchester Longhorns by 14 before falling to Grant in the semifin- als. Highlights of the season were a double overtime win over Stromsburg, second place in the Central Eight, win- ning sub-district and districts, and advancing to semifin- als at state. The girls started out a little slow los- ing their first two games to Rising City and Stromsburg. They got on the win- ning track when they defeated Nebraska Lutheran 55-28. Shelby looked like they could get things going, but lost a close game to Henderson 45-43. The girls never let down and came back to beat Osceola 43-34 in an exciting game. They then ran into a buzz saw and dropped the next four games to Silver Creek, Fullerton, East Butler and Palmer — four very tough teams. The next three games were all victories as the girls defeated Genoa, Hastings St. Cecelia and David City for the 98th, 99th, and 100th victories of Jurrens' career. Shelby lost its last regular season game to East Butler but played some im- pressive ball against Humphrey St. Fran- cis in a come-from behind victo- ry in the opening round of the district tournament. In the dis- trict finals the Lady Huskies faced Osceola, a team they had beaten earlier in the year, and lost 52-42.
