HUSKY 1984 BRINGING OUT OUR BEST SHELBY PUBLIC SCHOOLS The Husky '84 annual theme took a while to choose, but once the year got rolling there was no question in our minds that Bringing Out Our Best would be a very appropriate theme. Throughout the school there is always somebody, some- where, somehow, and at sometime Bringing Out Our Best. Whether it be our teachers or coaches, the custodians, bus drivers, lunch program personnel, secretaries, or administra- tion; they are all preparing us for our future, making us run extra laps, keeping our school sanitary, getting us to school on time, keeping our stomaches from growling, giving us mes- sages, and keeping everything under control. The students are busy working at their best for good grades, scholarships, and making parents proud. They are also work- ing together in sports, band, vocal music, and other activities to be number one and keep the Shelby tradition at its BEST. As you turn through the pages of this yearbook we hope you find yourself and your friends Bringing Out Your Best dur- ing the '84 year. We hope it helps you recall memories that can be brought back out forever and ever. Beginning on Monday the 19th of September, Homecoming was started with baby day. Following that was Hawaiian day, Punk rock day, formal day, and finally grub day. Eighth grader, Rjck Luchsinger, went all out and got a Mohawk for punk rock day. Homecoming day, Friday the 23rd, was a rather nice day except for the wind which made the floats tougher to put together and stay together. Float building, under the theme Video Games, was start- ed at 8:30 a.m. and was to be done before the judges came at noon. At 1:30 the traditional Homecoming parade was under way through the main street of Shelby. Some of the highlights of the parade were the pep rally with the cheerleaders performing routines and a spirit boosting skit. The band played the school song and other spirit lifting tunes. The time everyone had been waiting for all week had finally come. Through decorating the school, dressing up for Spirit week, getting dates, and building floats, everyone was ready for the big football game with Howells. The Shelby fans came ready to cheer the foot- ball team to a victory. The football team was not about to let them down, and so they defeated Howells 28-18 for another Homecoming victory. During halftime at the football game, Spirit week winners were announced as well as the winners of the float building competition. In the junior high, the winners were the eighth graders with Pit- fall and the seventh graders were the runners up with Bugertime. In the high school competition the freshman won first place with Q-Bert , the juniors had the Royalty Float and took second place. The team started practice August 15 with 37 girls determined to make this the Best season they possibly could. The team also had a new assistant coach, Dan Schnoes, who was well likec and adapted very well for his first time coaching. The girls had three weeks to prepare for the first game of the season against Stromsburg. The team must have done a good job in preparing for the game as they beat Stromsburg 15-3, 15-10. Keeping the spirit going entering the SCC Milford Invitational Tournament, the girls were facing a new experience, because they had never been in this tournament before and would meet some tough competition. The tournament was an all day event. The girls met Hebron in the first round of play beating them 15-8, 15-12. The next game was against Milford and the girls took their first loss of the season in three long sets 9-15, 16-15, 15-17. The team then had to play Lincoln Christian, losing 12-15, 3-15. The gills' next big games were in the David City Invitational Tournament where they took third place. Receiving honors in the tournament were Teresa O'Brien and Tami Hegi, first team all tournament, and Lorrie Bilstein, honorable mention. The next big event for the girls was the Goldenrod Conference Tournament. For the second year in a row the girls came home with first place. Chosen for the Goldenrod Tournament Team were Teresa O'Brien and Lorrie Bilstein, first team; and Tami Hegi, second team. Seeded first for the district tournament held in Osceola, the girls again came home with the first place trophy. This advanced the girls to the regional playoff where the girls met Deshler to see who would advance to the state tournaments. Unfortunately the girls just couldn't seem to get things to go their way, losing 13-15, 12-15. Track season began March 12, and there were 20 boys out for the '84 season. The boys' goals were to keep improving as the season matured, and to try and get someone at the state meet. The team finished in third place at the Osceola and Shelby Relays, eighth place at the Centennial Meet, second place against Nebraska Christian, sixth place at the Stromsburg and GRC Meets, and finished in tenth place at the District Meet. Some highlights of the boys track season were winning a trophy at the Husky Relays, the 400 meter relay team placing first at the Stromsburg and Conference Meets. The 3200 meter relay team made a strong showing all year, and placed third at Districts. “Bringing out their best all season, almost everyone managed to improve throughout the season. Head Coach Mr. Schnoes felt the boys had a successful track season, with most of the boys working hard all season and never giving up. A lot of the team members set new personal bests. Mr. Schnoes was assisted by Mr. O'Brien and student managers Shane Kuhnel, Greg Boruch, and T.J. Rathjen. 32 MIDDLE PICTURE: Mark Fusco does his stretching before his big relay. This year the girls track team was made up of 18 girls ready to “bring out their best,“ and the team was lead by eight returning letter winners. The girls wanted to improve over last year, and they did accomplish it by improving and setting new school records in the 3200 meter relay with a time of 10:28.6 (Becky Fusco, Holly Hernbloom, Kelly Bright, and Michelle Brewster); in the shot put, 35-5Vi (Teresa O'Brien); and in the 3200 meter run, 13:36.7 (Becky Fusco). Teresa O'Brien placed second at the District Meet in the discuss with a throw of 106-2, advancing her to the state meet. The team placed fourth in the Osceola Relays, third in the Shelby Relays, tied for fifth at the Osceola Meet, seventh at the Cenntennial Meet, fourth at the Stromsburg and GRC Meets, and eighth at Districts. Head Coach Mr. Fusco and Asst. Coach Jurrens thought the girls did a fine job, especially since everyone improved on their times and distances. They also were very pleased with the attitude of the team, and the improvement they showed. Trophies we won include Gold- enrod Conference football co- champions; GRC volleyball season and tournament champions; boys basketball tournament consolation winners; girls basketball season co- champions and tournament (GRC and district) runners-up; third place trophy in the Husky Relays; 20-year participation award for the band attending the Pershing band contest. Even though trophies aren't giv- en to students for their work in the classroom, many students were rec- ognized on the honor roll and per- fect attendance charts. Also, many seniors won scholarships. Looking back, we can say that in the 1983-84 school year we did Bring Out Our Best . mm
