From that point on, Shelby stiffened and upset Humphrey (not beaten in three years) in a thrill- ing overtime. With confidence, Shelby then tallied up seven more wins to get a state playoff berth. Shelby first went to the grid to upturn Stapleton 54-0. Then, win- ning a home field advantage, they smashed Adams in the semi-finals 72-18. With the trophy now glowing in their eyes, Shelby pulled off their first Nebraska State Championship in D-1 Eight Man football by defeating Lawrence 36-31. The highlight of the regular season was the tough win over Hampton in three sets. With this win the Huskies clinched the C.R.C. Conference Championship. The team then trav- eled to Genoa for the District Tournament. They defeated Osceola, Humphrey St. Francis, and then Humphrey to capture the District Championship. Shelby went on to defeat David City Public in three long and grueling sets to win the chance to go to Lincoln for the state tournament. In the first round, Shelby suffered their first defeat of the season to Hastings St. Cecilia in three sets. This was the final game for the 1981-82 volleyball team which ended the season with a record of 19-1. The band first marched at the State Fair. From then on, the band worked hard for Columbus Days. In Columbus, they received a Superior rating in the field competition; howev- er, they didn't march in the parade due to the weather. Next was Platts- mouth, where the band received another Superior rating. Nebraska March- ing Band Festival at Pershing Auditorium, earning their third Superior rat- ing. At the C.R.C. Honor Band Clinic, twenty-two of the seventy-five musi- cians were from Shelby. The band went to Columbus again to compete in the District Music Contest: Here they received an Excellent rating. That afternoon, the band left for Des Moines, Iowa. The next day, they compet- ed in the Adventureland-Drake Relays Festival of Bands. Tnis was the first interstate competition Shelby had entered. The band marched in the pa- rade and proudly received the Class C first place trophy. Shelby was the only out-of-state band to place in any class or the parade competition. In appreciation of their services in these past years, the Band Mothers presented Miss Wright and Mr. Cain with gifts. The students and parents showed their appreciation by giving them a standing ovation. Senior girls enjoy the Music Banquet Rosalie Gabel gives Mr. Cain and Miss Wright gifts from the Band Mothers. Coach Bill Wilson Coach Keith Jurrens Coach Terry Fusco Angie Bomberger Donna Nickolite Randy Moon Coach John O'Brien Bob White Bob Hanson Rhonda Smith Sally DeBaets Let's Get Physical was the theme for the 1982 Athletic Banquet. The banauet had more excitement than usual this year. The pride of being State Football Champs, State Qualifiers in Volleyball and Boys' Basketball, and CRC Season Champs in Volleyball and Girls' Basketball was evident. Rhonda Smith opened with the Welcome and a Pot Luck supper was served after Krystal Gable cave the Prayer. Summing up their year in sports and giving out awards were: Mr. Fusco-Boys' Basketball Girls' Track; Mr. Jurrens-Volleyball Girls' Basketball; Mr. Wilson-Boys' Track; Mr. O'Brien-Football. Senior players commenting about the past season were: Angie Bomberger Donna Nickolite-Volleyball; Bob White-Football; Dottie Ingalls Susan Whitmore-Girls' Basketball; Randy Moon-Boys' Basketball. The guest speaker was Bod Hanson, presently the head basketball coach at the University of Nebraska-Omaha. The closing remarks were given by Sally DeBaets. s T A T E Q u A Good rebound, Steve! Way to sky , Todd! One of Bob's many rebounds! Is that $100 in your sock, Bob? It was difficult for the boys to put their attention on basketball after they experienced such an excellent football season. Although they started out looking a little sluggish, they continued to improve as the season progressed. When the CRC Tournament rolled around, the boys were ready. They wanted revenge against Hordville for their one-point loss earlier in the season. However, the Huskies fell five points short of Hordville in the semi-finals. Shelby went on to defeat Hampton for third place in the tournament. The next stop was Districts. Shelby defeated Cedar Rapids. Humphrey, and Humphrey St. Francis to capture the District Championship Crown. In the Regional playoff, Shelby defeated a tough David City Aquinas team by two points in over-time. For the first time since 1928 the Huskies were on their way to the State Tournament. The Huskies played well, but it wasn't enough as Ewing defeated them by three points in overtime. 42 ALL CONFERENCE: Teresa O'Brien, Susan Whitmore, Dottie Ingalls. This one's mine!! Hands up, defense!! Don't foul her, Becky! You can out-jump her, Jane! MANAGERS: From top; Stephanie Augustin, SueAnn Gondringer, Ka- ren Vrbka. It wasn't enough for the girls to re-write the re- cord books in their vol- leyball season; they had to do it in basketball, too. For the first time in the history of girls' basketball at Shelby the girls won the C.R.C. Season Champion- ship. The finals seemed to be a trouble-spot for the girls as they were defeat- ed by Hampton in the fin- als of the C.R.C. Tourna- ment and by Cedar Rapids in the District Tourna- ment. c. R. C.
