1935 — Gabel and Gabriel Motor and Implement Company was started but Gable soon sold out. It was the first place in the country to sell rubber tires for tractors. 1936 — Main Street was paved. 1938 — The sewer system was started. 1944 — McMeekin Implement opened. 1945 — Bemt's Station was destroyed by fire when an oil transport hit the pumps. 1946 — The Shelby Hospital was opened but soon closed (it was located where Vem Lockman presently lives). Irene Dobias started her own beauty shop. Thclen's Drug Store was sold to Harold Blevins. The building is now Merv's Plumbing. Paul Dobias was the town building contractor. Shelby Hardware and Furniture was started. 1947 — The Wesley Chapel congregation united with the Shelby Methodist Church. Matt's Market was started; it is now Mike's Market owned and run by Mike Rief. The Shelby Hatchery and Feed Store was started. The Shelby Mill and Elevator, and Shelby Fertilizer, Feed and Seed Inc. were start- ed and owned by Mel llcibel. 1948 — The elevator owned by Bob and Harold Taddiken burned. The rectory at the Catholic Church was built. 1949 — An agricultural shop at the school was built. The white frame Methodist Church was tom down. 1950 — Kindergarten was added to the public school. La Myra Plkomey's Beauty Shop was begun. A third new Methodist Church was built (now in use). Wombo's Tavern was opened. 1951 — Bemt's Motel was started. 1952 — Asphalt oil was applied to some of the graveled streets. 1953 — Hastert's Hardware closed. 1954 — Dr. Robert L. Bierbower became the town doctor. 1955 — The buildings from McBeth, Cedar View and Bluffton school districts were moved to town and used as classrooms. 1956 — A Catholic parochial grade school was opened. 1957 — Moon's Store sold to J. H. Runyan. 1958 — H C H Repair was started. 1960 — The 6th bond issue carried in 1959, and a new school house (now in use) was built and dedicated. Runyan's Grocery became Voss Brothers. 1962 — Five rooms were added to the school, Gregg Andreasen bought McMeekin Implement, a laundromat was opened, King's Dance Hall was built, Alva Lewis's Pool Hall closed, Bob's Barbershop opened and Ann's Cafe was opened. 1963 — Otto Paulson's Produce Station on main street, was gutted by fire. Wyman Electric was started. 1964 — A tornado Southeast of Shelby destroyed the Bob Rafert home and caused extensive damage to the buildings on the Dale Scow, Wilbert Hohndorf, Louis Daum, Laonard Hiemer and the Dean White farms. Ben Wagner bought the Planning Mill. A C B was opened, and Triple S Service, owned by Bud Abbott was started. I 1965 — Land was purchased for a community park; the acreage adjoins Shelby on the east. 1966 — Rinkey's Vickers Service Station was started. 1967 — King's Dance Hall was destroyed by fire. Trees were planted and a tennis court cemented at the ball park. 1968 — The Catholic grade school closed. The E. U. B. congregation united with the Methodist Church. Ann's Cafe closed, and part of Shelby's Legion Club was opened. 1969 — The Nu-Style Beauty Salon was started. 1970 — A teen center in a remodeled building on main street burned because of faulty wiring. Farmer's Oil Company merged with the Farmer's Business Association. Rick Davis started a body shop. An addition to the Legion Club was opened. 1971 — Merv's Plumbing, Heating and Air Conditioning opened. Bob Linda opened a laundromat and the Children's Nook now run by Alma Hartson, was opened. 1972 — Nu-Style Beauty Salon moved to a new location. 1973 — The Girls' Volleyball Team went to the State Tournament. 1974 — The Girls' Volleyball Team became the State Class-D Champions. 1975 — Bob's Barbershop closed; it is now the Family Style Beauty Salon. 1976 — Many of the streets were paved. Mike's Market opened and the Family Style Beauty Salon was started by Helen Smith. 1977 — The new fire hall was built on Main Street, a concrete elevator was built by Farmer's Co-op and Dr. Bierbower built a new office. 1978 — The girls went to the State Volleyball Tournament C Steve's Thriftway opened. Tornado took Wallace Benda's, Frank Mytholar, and Wayne Lo- gan's homes. 1979 — Shelby's Mayor is Bud Abbott, postmaster is Forest Bahm, mailcarriers are Chet Buchholz and Willis Wills, minister at the United Methodist Church is Dr. Robert Ness and the Catholic Father is Father Zastrow. The Shelby Hotel Opened under the ownership of George Thelen. The Hair Affair opened under the ownership of Bette Abbott. 2
