1874 100 Yu Jr’S — A post office was located east of the present location of Shelby, with Horace A. Cowles as postmaster. Its name was Cyclone, but because the land could not be settled upon in price, the town was located on the present site. 1879 — Shelby was founded under the name of Arcade on the present site. John T. Dunning built the first elevator. The first store selling general mer- chandise was opened by H. C. and Frank Dunning. The first hardware store was opened by Conrad Thelen and Charles Krumbach. The third store was opened by Fox and Griffin. The Stalnaker brothers built the first hotel. Theo Kraus had the first boot and shoe shop. Dunning and Mentzer opened a lumberyard. Implement dealers included E. Burrill, Child C Mack, John Anderson, and Robert Speltz. 1880 — The name Arcade was changed to Shelby due to confusion with the town of Arcadia. The name was also the name of an offical of the railroad. J. H. Heron had a livery stable. Dr. J. A. Inks was the only physician, and the lumberyard was built. 1881 — J. S. Smith and Sons acquired the lumberyard. 1882 — The local chapter of the Grand Army of the Republic was chartered with 16 members. Meetings were held in the first Legion Club located above the future Moon's Store, also called the Opera House where Lawrence Welk once played. 1883 — The Methodists built the first permanent church located one block east of the present site. The population of Shelby was 200. 1884 — The United Brethren Church was built in the northwest part of town. 1886 — The bank of Shelby was established by Captain Smith and Mr. Anderson of Stromsburg. Chartered at this time was the Masonic Lodge. 1889 — The Shelby Sun published by Greenly Dawson Woods, was the town paper. Levi Cunningham promoted activities resulting in the purchase of a bell for the Methodist Church at $75. 1890 — Fuel changed from buffalo chips, wood and cobs to coal. 1892 — Louis Goetz started a butcher shop. 1893 — Crops were curtailed by drought. It was remembered as a year of panic, for banks went broke, merchants failed, and thousands of men were un- employed . 1894 — The first class graduated from Shelby Public School with three members: Charles Casselberry, Grace Stillwell and Mabel Darlington. 1897 — The town paid John Mercer $16 per month for a lighting system (2 arc lights on main street). 1898 — The Catholics built their first church located where the Chet Buchholz house now sits. Much of the east side of main street burned when thieves set a fire in the post office. 1902 — Wesley Chapel was built. 1903 — Telephone service progressed from one telephone in the drug store, to an office in the Metheny home, and then to a switchboard operated by the McGrew sisters and others. 1904 — The Farmers' Business Association was started. 1905 — The school term increased to nine months and the Order of the Eastern Star originated. 1906 — A new Methodist Church was built. Moon's Store and Hastert's Hardware opened. 1908 — The second United Bretheren Church was built, now housing the Masonic Lodge. 1909 — A brick school house was erected on the site of the present football field. Cars began to appear. 1910 — The population of the county was 10, 521. Dr. George B. Potter was the town physician. 1911 — Shelby's sandpipe was erected. Sye Davis started a barbershop. 1912 — 12th grad was added to the Shelby Public School. 1914 — There was still a town well and a water trough near the site of the Shelby Sun office. 1917 — The U.S. entered World War I. 1918 — A flu epidemic was serious, as the State Board of Health closed churches, schools, theaters, and banned public meetings. 1920 — Shelby's Legion Post was organized and named the McMillen Post in honor of Frank McMillen, the first Shelby soldier to die in WW1. The Dunning Elevator burned, a planning mill was built, the Rebekah Lodge was organized, and a square dance club was organized. 1922 — George Abts Windmills and Plumbing was started. J. S. Smith and Sons sold the Lumberyard to Strand and Ray; it is presently owned by Lee Nicolas. 1923 — The streets of Shelby were graveled. 1924 — Bemt's Oil of Shelby were graveled. 1926 — John Dunning built Shelby's first and only broadcasting station KGBY. Alva Lewis's Pool Hall and Bemt's Cafe were started. 1928 — Lawrence Welk played at the Opera House. 1930 — The Farmers' Oil Company began the present Sacred Heart Catholic Church was built. 1931 — Shelby State Bank closed permanently. 1932 — A school gymnasium was built; a seperate construction below ground level. The Economy Food Market was started, where the new fire house now stands. 1935 — Gabel and Gabriel Motor and Implement Company was started but Gable soon sold out. It was the first place in the country to sell rubber tires for tractors. 1936 — Main Street was paved. 1938 — The sewer system was started. 1944 — McMeekin Implement opened. 1945 — Bemt's Station was destroyed by fire when an oil transport hit the pumps. 1946 — The Shelby Hospital was opened but soon closed (it was located where Vem Lockman presently lives). Irene Dobias started her own beauty shop. Thclen's Drug Store was sold to Harold Blevins. The building is now Merv's Plumbing. Paul Dobias was the town building contractor. Shelby Hardware and Furniture was started. 1947 — The Wesley Chapel congregation united with the Shelby Methodist Church. Matt's Market was started; it is now Mike's Market owned and run by Mike Rief. The Shelby Hatchery and Feed Store was started. The Shelby Mill and Elevator, and Shelby Fertilizer, Feed and Seed Inc. were start- ed and owned by Mel llcibel. 1948 — The elevator owned by Bob and Harold Taddiken burned. The rectory at the Catholic Church was built. 1949 — An agricultural shop at the school was built. The white frame Methodist Church was tom down. 1950 — Kindergarten was added to the public school. La Myra Plkomey's Beauty Shop was begun. A third new Methodist Church was built (now in use). Wombo's Tavern was opened. 1951 — Bemt's Motel was started. 1952 — Asphalt oil was applied to some of the graveled streets. 1953 — Hastert's Hardware closed. 1954 — Dr. Robert L. Bierbower became the town doctor. 1955 — The buildings from McBeth, Cedar View and Bluffton school districts were moved to town and used as classrooms. 1956 — A Catholic parochial grade school was opened. 1957 — Moon's Store sold to J. H. Runyan. 1958 — H C H Repair was started. 1960 — The 6th bond issue carried in 1959, and a new school house (now in use) was built and dedicated. Runyan's Grocery became Voss Brothers. 1962 — Five rooms were added to the school, Gregg Andreasen bought McMeekin Implement, a laundromat was opened, King's Dance Hall was built, Alva Lewis's Pool Hall closed, Bob's Barbershop opened and Ann's Cafe was opened. 1963 — Otto Paulson's Produce Station on main street, was gutted by fire. Wyman Electric was started. 1964 — A tornado Southeast of Shelby destroyed the Bob Rafert home and caused extensive damage to the buildings on the Dale Scow, Wilbert Hohndorf, Louis Daum, Laonard Hiemer and the Dean White farms. Ben Wagner bought the Planning Mill. A C B was opened, and Triple S Service, owned by Bud Abbott was started. I 1965 — Land was purchased for a community park; the acreage adjoins Shelby on the east. 1966 — Rinkey's Vickers Service Station was started. 1967 — King's Dance Hall was destroyed by fire. Trees were planted and a tennis court cemented at the ball park. 1968 — The Catholic grade school closed. The E. U. B. congregation united with the Methodist Church. Ann's Cafe closed, and part of Shelby's Legion Club was opened. 1969 — The Nu-Style Beauty Salon was started. 1970 — A teen center in a remodeled building on main street burned because of faulty wiring. Farmer's Oil Company merged with the Farmer's Business Association. Rick Davis started a body shop. An addition to the Legion Club was opened. 1971 — Merv's Plumbing, Heating and Air Conditioning opened. Bob Linda opened a laundromat and the Children's Nook now run by Alma Hartson, was opened. 1972 — Nu-Style Beauty Salon moved to a new location. 1973 — The Girls' Volleyball Team went to the State Tournament. 1974 — The Girls' Volleyball Team became the State Class-D Champions. 1975 — Bob's Barbershop closed; it is now the Family Style Beauty Salon. 1976 — Many of the streets were paved. Mike's Market opened and the Family Style Beauty Salon was started by Helen Smith. 1977 — The new fire hall was built on Main Street, a concrete elevator was built by Farmer's Co-op and Dr. Bierbower built a new office. 1978 — The girls went to the State Volleyball Tournament C Steve's Thriftway opened. Tornado took Wallace Benda's, Frank Mytholar, and Wayne Lo- gan's homes. 1979 — Shelby's Mayor is Bud Abbott, postmaster is Forest Bahm, mailcarriers are Chet Buchholz and Willis Wills, minister at the United Methodist Church is Dr. Robert Ness and the Catholic Father is Father Zastrow. The Shelby Hotel Opened under the ownership of George Thelen. The Hair Affair opened under the ownership of Bette Abbott. 2 3 4 Ready, Set, Go! Hold on tight, Babs! Then in 1962 Mike Tread- way was crowned the first Homecoming King. In cele- brating the ensuing thirty years of royalty, flowers were pre- sented to the past Homecoming Kings and Queens by the Pep Club. On Thursday night, September 21, 1978, the Shelby volley- ball team celebrated a win over Hordville, 15-8 and 15-6. Be- tween the reserve and varsity matches the 1978 Homecoming candidates were introduced and presented with gifts; and fol- lowing the game, a bonfire and pep rally were held. On March 26, 1979 the annual Sport's Recogni- tion Banquet and Awards Ceremo- ny was held with Julie Hoeft, Pep Club Vice-President, giving the Welcome. A Pot Luck supper was served after Peg Wombacher gave the Prayer. Summing up the many experiences and giving out awards of each sport was the head coach of each sport. Junior girls entertaining Everyone enjoyed the banquet. We've Got Tonight'1 was the theme carried out for the Junior-Senior Prom. It was held May 4th, 1979, at the Shel- by High Gymnasium. The decorations were metallic streamers in colors of red, blue, green, and gold. They also had a carnival merry-go-round for the background picture setting. A delicious meal consisting of Watergate salad, roast turkey and dressing, mashed potatoes and gravy, com, relish, rolls, and cherry delight was prepared by the junior mothers. After the meal a nice program was enjoyed by all. Music was by ' 'Blue Haze'' and the grand march was lead by Junior Class President Kim Coffin and Richard Krumbach, and Senior Class President Andy Vrbka and Helen Nickolite. With the help of the junior sponsors, Mrs. Biddle and Miss Paap, the 1979 prom was a success. Dr. Edgar Kelley, Professor of Secondary Educational Administration at the University of Nebraska - Lincoln, gave the address, 1 'Dreams, Reality, and a Quest for Quality.'' Senior Sneak Trip The Senior Class of 1979 left for Osage Beach, Mis- souri , May 5, after the Prom. On the bus ride down many seniors enjoyed playing cards while others slept. After arriving at Kalfran Lodge, Saturday afternoon was spent relaxing and boating. That evening the class went to a restaurant and ate chicken, then on to the Ozark Opry. Sunday morn- ing they went downtown shopping. That afternoon the weather was put to good use, swimming in the pools, skiing, paddle boat riding, riding airplanes, and sunbathing. That evening after supper at the Village Smorgasboard, everyone went to Fun City to enjoy the bumper cars, go-carts, and slid down a gigantic slide. Both nights at the lodge a Disco - Dance lasted until midnight. They left Kalfran Lodge Monday morning after breakfast and arrived in Shelby early evening. It was a trip to remember. Shelby received their only loss on a cold night at Hordville as they were defeated by a slight margin of only two points. This loss handed Shelby the second place tro- phy in the CRC and denied them a trip to the state football playoffs. The potent offense of the Huskies averaged 42 points a game while the defense held their opponents to only 17 points a game. Shelby finished the year ranked seventh in the state. Be - sides receiving second place in the conference, Shelby placed five play- ers on the all - conference team. Members of the all-conference first team offense were: halfback — Chris Scow, guard — Greg Whitmore. Members of the first team defense were: linebacker — Rick Micek, defensive lineman — John Gabel. Andy Vrbka was named second teamed all-conference on offense at center and defense at linebacker. Rick Micek also received honorable mention on the all-state team and was selected to play in the eight- man all-star football game. Chris Scow The Shelby boys track team showed overall improvement and did well in their track meets this 1979 season. The 1979 girls track team had a very successful season. The girls team consisted of eighteen mem- bers and two managers. The team competed in six meets this season: They did very well by getting third in the Exeter Invt., winning the Hampton Dual, taking second in the CRC Meet, placing second with the boys and girls points combined in the Husky Relays, placing third at the Hampton Invt., and finishing their season by placing fifth in the District Meet. New school records were set in three events. They were in 880 yard dash — Helen Nickolite (2:34.9), the Mile — Cindy Whitmore (5:52.2), and the Two-Mile Relay — Barb Gabriel, Susan Whitmore, Cindy Whitmore, Helen Nickolite. (10:36.7). Many personal bests were set and improvement was shown in all the girls. The girls were coached by Terry Fusco and Asst. Coach — Keith Jurrens. The first item on the agenda, the Rangers vs. Boston baseball game at Arlington Stadium, proved exciting as the Rang- ers took extra innings to win. The following day brought a tour and concert in downtown Dallas. After a tour of the General Motors Assembly Plant, everyone appreciated the Texas Game Farm Safari especially the nearness of the ani- mals as they came up to the windows. The pic- nic lunch was also enjoyed. Friday was spent at Six Flags where some band members even took pleasure in a Peaches and Herb concert despite the rain. Early Saturday morning the band left for Shelby. Shelby's senior band started the school year with a trip to the Nebras- ka State Fair and then proceeded to get three Superiors and one Excel- lant in marching band contests. Thirty band members qulified for CRC Honor Band. At the Platte Music Contest, the band and stage band re- ceived Superiors while three of eight individual participants received Su- periors . Thanks to Mr. Cain and the sponsors the trip was a large success. There were thirty girls who modeled their clothes that were made throughout the year.
