1971 -1972 HUSKY Shelby High School During the school year four persons were tragically killed in a car-train accident. They were Leon Wombacher, his wife Carolyn, and their two children Todd and Sue Ann. To this family we would like to dedicate our annual as an everlasting remembrance and memorial. They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old. Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn. At the going down of the sun and in the morning We will remember them. ROMAINE T. It was a long, hot day and they performed three times. The competition they participated in was the Harvest of Harmony, Plattsmouth, and the State Marching Contest in Lin- coln. This year, the band competed in Class C for the first time but this did not stop the band from receiving superiors at Harvest of Harmony and Plattsmouth, and an ex- cellent rating at the State Marching Contest. Also, the band received a ten- year plaque at the State School Band Hopwood, Cherie Buchholz, Brian Hopwood, Kellan Perry, Paulette Kumpf, Lori Andre a son, Mike Boss, Julie Heibel, Jerry Stewart, Dick McMeekin. Tryouts for first chair were held in Hampton where Cherie Buchholz, Pam Brigham, and Terri Jones received first chair awards. Contest was held at Platte College this year at which the concert band received an excellent rating as did the stage band. The year wasn't all work for the band because of a few parties that were held. Throughout the year, a birthday party was held for Mr. Ulrich. Mr. Ulrich also had a Christ- mas party and a barbeque at the end of the year. Marching Band Above-Band Managers- Susan Grossnicklaus, Kevin Perry. Projects for the S Club for the 1971-72 school year consisted of the selling of letter baskets. By this means, money was raised to buy chevrons, letters, etc. for the lettermen. .Also, it was used to get a speaker for the athletic banquet. At present, there are no future plans of raising money. The regulations for lettering in track have been changed. They are as follows: 1. Individual must place in a meet with six or more teams partici- pating. 2. Relay member must run on a relay team that places first, second, or third in a meet with six or more teams participating. 3. Individual or relay member breaks an existing school record. 4. Make a total of twelve points for the season. The rules for all other sports have remained unchanged. 36 ATHLETIC Huskies Maintain Title • Front Row: Coach Terry Fusco, Mike Bock, John Matousek, Dan Schmid, Doug Hopwood, Jerry Stewart, Bob Fletcher, Kellan Perry, Rob Glatter, Bob Hiemer, Head Coach John O'Brien, Second Row: Chuck Nickolite, Greg Peterson, Gary Fletcher, Rocky Augustin, Don Hiemer, Ron Vrbka, Reggie Nekl, Robin Perry, Francis Kosch, Alan Logan, Mike DeTurk, Dale Linda. At the be- ginning of the season, the Huskies had set a goal of nine straight wins and no losses. With a lot of hard work, the Huskies were able to go undefeated for the second year. Being re- warded with the Crossroads Conference title, they also got a state rating of third in the World Herald for eight-man football. The volleyball season was changed this year to the fall so that the girls could spend more time with the sport. This way both the reserves and the varsity got a chance to play a set of games. The reserves had an undefeated season, ending up with nine wins and no losses. The reserves gained quite a bit of experience this year which will be showing up in the years to come. The varsity pulled through with a successful season of eight wins and four losses; therefore, ending up third in the conference. The varsity should have a good team returning next year, for they are losing only three seniors. The record of this year's basketball team does not really show the ability of the team when it got fired up. Perhaps the most impressive victory was over the Benedict Eagles.
